There are so many greats and Darryl Houston is certainly among the greatest. What a gift that God has given some to do what seems to be impossible. To God be the glory!
And, he also studied under the late great Alfred Bolden at the church of my late uncle, the Rev. Charles A. Craig, Jr.,” Prayer Tabernacle. Then came Thomas Whitfield!
That is that Detroit Sound on the Hammond. Every city had there unique sounds on the Hammond B3. Those who love him has the right to believe he is the greatest. Most comments are from people who never played an instrument. Play Darryl. Charles Nick's had one of the greatest choirs in Detroit. Peace
He may not be the greatest but check this guy out in the late 80s and 90s... he was pumping that organ with St. James in Detroit. Dude was a beast... he also shows a lot of emotion when he plays in those clips. Don't sleep on what came before us
The late great Minister Thomas Whitfield was awesome. You should listen to him play for Beverly Glenns ablun Coming again so so and He will anwer prayer fron the same album.
musicians shouldn't be compared. that takes away greatness of top. everyone that can professionally play is great. It's just levels to it. All musicians couldn't play at one point in time
You have a point my take is also that comparing musicians or having competition without mitigating possibly unintended consequences is detrimental to music/creativity as even novice can deliver a masterpiece. Society is sometimes to blame for bad blood (albeit not necessary) between musicians.
P J nope. Inspiration is different from comparing. I learned to play off inspiration. Then I just knew music sounded good and felt good and I wanted to be able to bring forward that feeling. I couldn’t compare myself to the musicians at church back then but I was very inspired and now, ima str8 clown. Besides comparing will forever have you searching for yourself self on the board.
Mr Houston had the skills of Art Tatum on piano and the skills of Jimmy Smith on organ, but he played with so much discipline you’d never know it unless you’ve seen him in that environment. He could write a book on being an accompanist. RIP Mr. Houston. Job well done.
My Hammond organ greats list just got bigger. This is about the eighth great I have discovered in recent months since I saw my first Hammond Gospel video from an old lady who was killing it after the end of a service. Shows you never loose it.
This style is very rare and is slowly becoming less. I love it he makes that Hammond earn its keep l didn’t see the Leslie hearing it in ear buds doesn’t do justice to the sound there’s no comparison to someone who knows how to put it through it’s paces sounds great!
. . . and John Peters ( *yes, he plays organ, too* ), Dominique Johnson, Quennel Gaskin, Doobie Powell, Kevin Powell, Twinkie Clark, Derrick Jackson, Lawrence Lyles, Aaron Mayfield, David Jackson, Travis Sayles, Eddie Brown, Eddie Howard, Mike Bereal, David Wright, James Hall, Melvin Crispell, Butch Heyward, Roger Jean, Jay Tillman, Reggie Strong, Wendell Lowe, Butch Woodie, Mike Davis, Antuan Walker, Aaron Shields, Dennis Montgomery III, Curtis Daniel, Rich Tolbert, Floyd Thomas, Darius Burns, C Shawn Tyson, Ezra Bufford, Moses Tyson... just to name a *FEW* !!!! These are in no particular order. My list goes on for DAYS, and some names are definitely missing!!! Everyone is entitled to their opinions and tastes,... but to place him *ABOVE* the aforementioned would be a bit of a *STRETCH* for most people, myself included! He's magnificent but not the GREATEST in my opinion. That's why I believe it's not a good practice to compare and better to just appreciate what all of them bring to the table!
So true. That had to be someone he knows personally. Or maybe not. He's good. But not even close to the greatest. So many beasts out here. On so many levels. We could never say.
Craig Brockman, Bennet Paysinger, Kevin Nichols, Jason White, Stan Lewis, Jason Freeman, Tony Wilkins, Jason Allen, Derrick Jackson, Daniel Weatherspoon, Nelson Jackson, Jerry Peters, Dwayne Swan, Tim Carmen, Matthew Bereal, Cassandra Oneal, Rodney East, Ji Nelson are a few other greats on Organ
Indeed, HE has an AMAZING "TALENT" but, to GOD BE "ALL" THE GLORY, AMEN!!! FOR THESE ARE THE GIFTS THAT HE "ALONE" HAS BESTOWED UPON THIS MAN, AMEN AGAIN!!!👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾👌🏾👍🏾🙏❤💯
I agree with Dae One. The beauty of it is that every organist has a different sound based upon their soul. We all get the benefit of hearing and enjoying that.
Let's give credit to whom deserves credit. The guy has impeccable timing, great knowledge of his instrument, and an obvious love for his GOD. What's not to like? Yet, at this writing 117 people don't like! God tells us in Ps 33 play music skillfully. That's what I see!
I don't compare musicians, because they are all gifted but I have two organist I love to hear them and they are Rev. Maceo Woods and from my home in Penns Grove NJ Bishop Freddie Washington.
Having been a member of St. James Missionary Baptist Church I knew both Rev. Nicks & Darryl. Darryl has always had his on approach to the organ, though his sound is influenced by Rev. Charles H. Nicks, Jr. Combining both of them is an awesome musical experience. As an organist I appreciate many who serve us with their unique sounds.
Iono I got a cuzzin in Alabama that is no joke at all then I had another cuzzin that played the organ so just great and she died while playing in church and my grandma played piano
I'm not very interesting upon Urban Gopsel Music to be deeply honest but some of these folks are very talented, and blessed :) May God bless them dearly 🙏💜
Every organist has his or her own style. It's like the difference between a Cadillac and a Lincoln. They're both excellent just different. From a guy that grew up in a staid Methodist Church this COGIC music is uplifting.
Maybe overlooked back home, but Billy Preston was probably one of the best known organists internationally. Here in the UK, he had solo hits in the pop charts, & of course he played with the Beatles & the Rolling Stones, & dozens of platinum selling albums feature his playing.
SORRY, BUT TWINKIE CKARK WAS AND STILL THE BEST ORGANIST!! She did something that no one has done before. She has combined jazz, classical, gospel, funk, rock, etc. Just made them into chords. As I used to listen to her live as a teenager she blew my mind. TWINKE CLARK IS JUST SIMPLY UNTOUCHABLE!!!!
I mean she's great But you can't ignore Joey Defransco There's lots of organ talent But if it's all about a measuring contest then you won't enjoy the art of it
He knows how to play, but to say that he's "great" or the "greatest" must mean that someone doesn't listen to many organ players. I know of this blind guy that would blow this dude out of the water. I was actually impressed and moved by his playing.
I wish that I could play the Hammond period, much less like this brother or the rest of them as they’re the most wicked keyboardists! I respect those brothers immensely. I play a different kind of organ (pipe) and music, but my hat is off to ALL Hammond organists.
That would be the late great Alfred Bolden. Billy Preston also studied with him at the church of my late uncle, the Rev. Charles A. Craig, Jr.,” Prayer Tabernacle. Then came Thomas Whitfield!
@@simbaking6338 Okay Let's Narrow The Perimeters Here !!.....If There was A Top 10 , Then Billy Would Definitely Be In The Top 3 !!!......I Am Willing to Concede This !!........
Thoroughly enjoyed. Billy Preston also played the organ so well it sounded like it was talking! Thank God for all the gifted musicians.
Billy Preston was the best
There are so many greats and Darryl Houston is certainly among the greatest. What a gift that God has given some to do what seems to be impossible. To God be the glory!
He was one of Areatha Franklin's musicians for many years. Both Darryl and Areatha must be having a ball in heaven now.
Its hard to say who is the greatest because Billy Preston was awesome . I can't compare these organ players , it's so many that can SHO NUF play .
And, he also studied under the late great Alfred Bolden at the church of my late uncle, the Rev. Charles A. Craig, Jr.,” Prayer Tabernacle. Then came Thomas Whitfield!

Love it. Those hands are annointed. Keep on playing for Jesus!
Classic St James Sound back in the Day!!!!
In the late 80's and 90's it was either between Darryl or Charles nicks
This is some amazing playing, just wow.
musicians shouldn't be compared. that takes away greatness of top. everyone that can professionally play is great. It's just levels to it. All musicians couldn't play at one point in time
Thank you sir and well put
True.
You have a point my take is also that comparing musicians or having competition without mitigating possibly unintended consequences is detrimental to music/creativity as even novice can deliver a masterpiece. Society is sometimes to blame for bad blood (albeit not necessary) between musicians.
You are wrong, they can be compared.

One of the all-time greats. There are many great organists, Larry Robinson, Twinky Clark, etc. He is certainly in that class, though.

Mr. Houston definitely plays with feeling. His style most definitely moves you too.
I agree with Dae One. The beauty of it is that every organist has a different sound based upon their soul. We all get the benefit of hearing and enjoying that.
Outstanding!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He is the greatest ! I said it better be that man that plays for the Detroit Mass choir !
The Brother is anointed & gifted.. Bring down the claim of the best...
Oooo just beautiful

I know a number of organist who are this good! If you can handle a B3 and make it “talk” you are in a class all to yourself!
By saying he’s the greatest ruins his performance because everybody thinks he’s overrated now
Bravo! Thank you.
Maaaannn
Rankings ruin it every time
Elder Leon Bonner of the Tabernacle of Prayer, Jamaica, NY
Oh my goodness... greatest organist of all time...
Art is to be appreciated not compared
Dats that ol'e school playin right there🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾

How does everyone seem to overlook Billy Preston I’m just saying.

Steve Scott That is big mistake dude

Billy. Preston. Hands. Down !!! Then. Followed. By. Bach ,. E.P. Biggs,. Marie. Alain ,. Virgil. Fox , ect , ect, ect........
He's ALRIGHT! But to say he is the Greatest organist of ALL time is BEYOND overrating (smile). THAT is blasphemous(smile)
Wendell W. Alderman I agree. There's always someone new popping up. Right now Cory Henry may claim the title until the next...
You are absolutely correct! Their are way better organist than this dude. I know plenty. Corey Henry isn't new that boy can play!
Also if you haven't heard Bobby Sparks you have to pause the conversation and go listen. He's a beast
Then who is...as to the greatest gospel Hammond organist?
I agree. He's alright. He was missing passing chords. Lol
My Lord!
I would love to sing while he plays that organ go boy
This GOD giving talent
When you can make a organ talk you know you bad!!!
Hey I have a big ole head and play the keys as well. I wonder if we're related.
Praise God. But that title belongs to Ms Twinkie Clark.. God is still good anyhow, continue to work brotham
That part!!!
To say who is the greatest is to over look to whom they are giving the glory to.
super
There should be a keyboard cam so we can see what the hands are doing
If you missed that late great Man of Music, Min. Thomas A. Whitfield, playing the Hammond organ, you missed a musical revelation! 🙌🏽

Twinkie will play them out the building. Most forget, she learned most from her mother, the great Dr. Mattie Moss Clark.

There is one in St. Louis that makes the organ hum
He is a beast though 😊
Why do we always put our organist as the best😊. My church growing up did the same with our organist.
Late Billy Preston by far!!!!!!
Late L.Craig Tyson
Twinkie Clark
Moses Tyson
Corey Henry
J.R. Logan Glenn Gibson
Yes I have to agree Billy Preston is the G.O.A.T. then my cuzn Jimmy "Big Jim" Wright R.I.P. family💯

Glenn Gibson is the best

He used to pump the organ at st james
