    I saw the Random Encounters book at a Michael's craft store of all places in late 2021, and handed it to my wife who was at the time struggling to find Xmas gift ideas for me, telling her "you can give me this if you want". Unfortunately I only sort skimmed through it initially after the holidays, and sat it on a shelf next to a bunch of other books I definitely intended to read in the very near future...
    ... fast forward to December 2022, when I'd just wrapped up a 3-year home-brew-setting 5e campaign and now had time to catch up on some reading.. and was kicking myself for not having read this sooner. There's a lot of material in there that could have been seamlessly grafted into my campaign, particularly in some of the city settings that often felt like rushed stop-overs in between getting out adventuring in the wilderness. I particularly like the way it's designed with a lot of locations designed to plug-and-play into any of the longer scenarios presented.

      It is a fantastic resource and yes most of it you can just drop in to your games with minimal effort.

    I own the random encounters book but i forgot how useful it can be. I like how you talk about how you use these things during your creative process; that’s the best takeaway for me

    I'm not a DM but I purchased all the books they made. I do a lot of solo stuff and never actually played dnd with anyone. I also have dnd DMs and players handbook as well as the monster hand book. This gives me a rich wealth of information to create my campaigns. Tbh, I purchased all this stuff for a grid down situation. No internet or if the electric is out, I will still have entertainment.

      OOOh nice idea about using these for solo stuff. I bet they work really well. THe traps and puzzles book even has a dungeon generator!

      I'm really interested in hearing about your solo adventures! I've thought about it as well, but not sure how to approach as both a DM and PC.

      @@omnifuturistic I like using books like this for Cairn games. I can flush out a party of my choice or I will roll them out. I have ideas for plots so the books help me tie everything together. NPC's with back stories. I will create zones on the board for random events, traps, weather, things like that. I have dice for NPC moods, also weather dice, adds a bit more emersion.

    I received the Puzzle book as a Christmas gift and was really impressed by the amount of useable material. I intend to pick up the others.

    Great video! I already had the npc book and just ordered the trap and encounter books.

    I picked up the random encounters and the traps book. The biggest weakness of these books is the visual (duotone) style. It renders the maps unusable.
    I didn't buy the dragon book but I bet it will be my favorite. The npc book is good BECAUSE of the blue art.

    • @TheBattlinBarrowGaming
      @TheBattlinBarrowGaming  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah 100% agree about the maps. I love a good bit of cartography and unfortunately these don't have it. Dragon book is really good.

    I want to purchase this series for my grandson. He is 13 and has been playing for 2 years. They have a fantasy club at his IB school, he usually is put with the high schoolers...he wants to start building worlds and being a DM. Is there an order that would be helpful?

    • @TheBattlinBarrowGaming
      @TheBattlinBarrowGaming  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sounds like your grandson has some amazing grandparents! Book wise aside from the dungeons and dragons dungeon master guide, sly flourish return of the lazy dungeon master is a great get up and going book. There's and old book called world builders guide book www.drivethrurpg.com/m/product/17445 that's available as a pdf

      To ad for these books, the encounters one first, then npc, then traps and the dragons isn't required unless he has lots of dragons

      @@TheBattlinBarrowGaming He comes from a long line of nerds. I played in college. I am introducing him to classic nerd movies. He is doing the Star Wars series with his dad, and I watched The Princess Bride with him...After he finishes Star Wars...Space Balls is a must see. We have done Ghostbusters, a few classic anime... It's my job to train him in the ways of my people.

    OK so now that things are moving forward. We have some more books. Bosses /Minions + Tactics, and the Random Tables books... Does anyone know if there is a list of books going forward for this series?

    I've been lucky enough to thrift all 4 of these, in mint condition, from FLG stores. By the 2nd or 3rd, I realized I was stumbling upon a series, but it's been a bit hard to find a coherent list online. I've seen alledged additions like, 'Villians, minions & their tactics', and 'Proactive Roleplay', as well as an 'Astonishing' Random tables version. How many in total are there, has anyone any experience w/more than the 4 books in the video? These seem to regularly appear and therefore were probably the first or most popular publishing run, from what I can tell. It seems there's more to them, for the completionists out there (me, I'm the completionist).

    • @TheBattlinBarrowGaming
      @TheBattlinBarrowGaming  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think there is a new book coming out soon. I've only seen these four and the new one

    • @TheRedragon900
      @TheRedragon900 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've gotten each in order upon release (I pre ordered them) Random Encounters, NPC's, Traps and Dungeons, Dragons, Astonishing Random Tables (just released), Proactive Roleplay (early Oct), and Villains Minions and tactics (late Oct). The last 2 books release dates were pretty close on Amazon, so I wouldn't be surprised if Minions gets released beforehand or the same time.

      I have a feelinf that Villains and Minions will use the rest of the former Jetpack7 title Masters and Minions.
      The Game Masters books of Legendary Dragons did the same with what was just called Legendary Dragons also Jetpack7.

    19:35 Ursula Verte. First step is to research the history and meaning of the name and how to pronounce it properly. (You murdered it, lol) Apparently the name is unique and it's meaning does reflect the description of the woman. Secondly according to part of the blurb, she has a seventeen 'Phase'... not phrase..., expansion plan, which gives us the opportunity of time, to develop her character. She reminds me of the Nursery Rhyme, "There was an old woman who lived in a shoe." Though unlike that mother, Ursula has positive plans for her dozen odd children which also give us twelve directions to take the story in that respect if we choose to. I would use her exactly as she is described in the book. (Which I have incidentally) :)
