Pretty much, both games are good, just that Unleashed feels like an entire package with Generations feeling somewhat incomplete. For the shift tho, I think it's all about direction, Generations felt refreshing at release, but now it lost it's purpose since everything it did then has been done by other Sonic titles or games he's in, and after a decade of it, Unleashed now looks refreshing spite it already being good, so who knows, we might get another shift again in another decade from people growing up with these games or just people getting tired of the current direction.
I would disagree. Unleashed feels like a half-baked experience with only the boost segments having good level design and controls, whereas generations refined the boost gameplay (it's still the best example of boost gameplay in the series so far IMO) and it kept the play style consistency fun, rather than the direction Unleashed took (two entirely separate gameplay styles, one which is really fun and the other which is rushed, buggy, not fun and tedious and just a bad experience overall). It seems like Sonic team threw everything at the wall to see what stuck with Unleashed after the failure of 06 rather than actually taking the time to expand on one specific gameplay formula and do it really well like Generations. Bearing in mind that Unleashed, while longer than generations, does go from being euphorically brilliant to mind-numbingly awful in a picosecond, whereas Generations does all things right and never really falters on any aspect apart from length, I'm inclined to say that Generations is a much better game than Unleashed, despite the length difference. As for the plot, Generations doesn't have a meaningful plot, it sucks in that regard. Unleashed still isn't good though, the characters are forgettable and the hub worlds detract from the overall experience, as well as the plot going from being serious to being light-hearted in a heartbeat.
@@channelspectator9661 At the sane time though, Generations maybe Fun with having the stages more wide open with the best example being Seaside hill, the game in of itself is too easy and not challenging which is the reason why I tend to lean into Unleashed more as that game challenges your speed and reflexes, like as if you're playing in Sonic's Shoes himself. Not too mention Generations he controls worse when you're not boosting, almost like a Tank and it's just not comfortable at all. Not to dump on generations, but yeah Generations does feel more rushed than Unleashed. You say buggy and Messy but after replaying Unleashed recently, I find that hard to believe since nothing about it was All buggy or messy and it's one of the reasons why I even replayed it to see what people are talking about. Though I do agree that the game can get pretty tedious when it comes to stage progression.

I'd give it to Unleashed. It's fully original, has a good story, has Jason, one of the top 5 OSTs, incredible art design, no Classic Sonic and it still has the best Boost formula level design. Generations is great....mostly. Its greatest issue is its length. The game feels like it only celebrates Sonic's history at a medium level. 9 stages is just far too little. It also has a practically non-existent story, and Planet Wisp is complete and utter trash and I want to burn it.
For years, I've always put Sonic Unleashed up against Sonic Heroes for debates, thinking Sonic Generations was always gonna be above Unleashed, but now that I see the fanbase giving Unleashed nonstop praise, looking past its flaws, it really changes everything.

Unleashed Boost Stages that I like to replay: -Windmill Isle -Roof Top Run -Dragon Road -Skyscraper Scramper -Eggmanland Generations Boost stages I like to replay: *All of them* Also Generations combines Colors and Unleashed’s controls to make it the best controlling 3D Sonic game since the Dreamcast Era. The good controls for platforming from Colors are in Generations and the good boost mechanic from Unleashed is in Generations.
The stages look way better in generations, the levels are just as immersive, and the camera in generations is leagues better, especially in the 2d sections.

And a generic predictable story, bad writing, cringe dialog, shallow character development, bad english dub(but great japanese VAs), a garbage progression system, mediocre gameplay, lousy laggy framerate, bad 2d camera, Sonic is heavy as a tank, turning is bad, drifting is bad and it has the best CG Intro in the franchise.
Sonic Unleashed is even after all these years, absolutely gorgeous. And not to mention a pretty engaging story. Chip wasn't a bad side character either. I also think the Werehog is pretty in depth with its combat but the levels themselves are just uninspired and fairly empty. If you are ripping off GoW you must also bring over the spectacle that comes with these character action games to make them more interesting especially if they are going to be so long. The day time levels were very well designed and increasingly get more difficult but more satisfying to master. Also loved the hubs, sometimes its nice to take it all in and explore a small areas and talk and interact with the folk your saving. Adds character and personality and doesn't feel empty. Dark Gaia is also a cooler looking monster to boot. Also just feels like your going on an adventure. Sonic also has a bit of an arc through his self doubt and frustration halfway through the story. Also I think it is the fastest Sonic's been, feels like Sonics only gotten slower after Colors. I'm also a fan of small details like the speed meter, call it a placebo but it does feel like its indicating I'm going faster than I actually am.
I Unleashed was my first game for PS2 and Xbox 360. Generation is my first game that got me into the franchise. But love Unleashed more than Generations. I am curious what other live debates that there could be. Debate Suggestions: Jason Griffith vs Ryan Drummond which is the best voice actors that fits with Sonic's design and personality. Colors vs Forces about the game itself Dreamcast era vs Modern era games and/or designs. Unleashed has better lighting and more levels and floaty movement. Generations has tighter controls, easier to steer sonic, but has less levels. Unleashed Wii/Ps2 Has longer day levels, Split werehog acts, and different level design. Evan glossed over the Characterization question and focused only on Chip. When the characterization of Sonic,Tails, and Amy is also important as well as other characters.
What characterization? Tails being a coward and Amy doing nothing? They do not contribute to the game's plot in any significant way and could easily be removed. People always make generic defenses for the game like: "It has character development and dark themes," yet they never elaborate on it, and I see perfectly why.

Been waiting for this Debate for a While😁 Unleashed for the Win tho, I grew up with both of these two games and revisited them recently and gotta say I used to see Generations as the best Sonic Games but after having fun with both the Day and Night Levels and enjoying the atmosphere of the game, I really loved the variety/dynamic of the gameplay. Day stages were fast paced and exciting while Night Stages had some chill beat them up action and cool platforming. I get the Werehog stages ain’t for everyone but they were honestly a lot of fun and had a fair challenge in my opinion. I still Love Generations tho lol
Definitely wouldn't say Unleashed was the better game. If you get a fresh save file and play through both games, Generations is much more refined and stream lined, with less annoying bumps and hills to climb. There's always been a trend with games - a game is initially over hated in the fanbase, which then gets a retrospective look and becomes overrated. Unleashed and Gen 5 Pokemon comes to mind (not that they're bad or anything, it's just that people become a little too 'rose tinted').
How do people spend 45 minutes in a werehog stage Even back when I was a little kid playing this, the longest I've ever spent in one (not counting eggmanland) was Shamar night at about 15 minutes.
In Unleashed, going back to the hub worlds to open the daytime or nighttime Act 2s and 3s will help avoid being too stuck on medals. They aren’t necessary for the story to progress but they are new challenges that don’t require to repeat levels you don’t want to. But replaying speed levels for S ranks is fun
I personally prefer Sonic Unleashed. Faster gameplay and a much more engaging story than Sonic Generations. Even has more content than Sonic Generations.

I enjoy playing both Unleashed and Generations. Unleashed is still my favorite Sonic game. I like the underdogs that is why like Sonic Forces. Sonic Forces is my 2nd favorite Sonic game in my opinion.
I’m not a fan of the werehog I think it’s incredibly boring, but I think the rest of unleashed is pretty good. Generations is overall good but it’s so short and almost feels half assed. It’s hard for me to say which game is better because I think they’re both flawed just in different ways. I almost think unleashed is better JUST because it’s longer, generations doesn’t even feel like a full game.

I couldnt finish sonic unleashed. Not because it was too difficult but because it wasnt interesting enough for me. I think Generations stages were more interesting because of nostalgia and presentation and the young sonic stages are really good too.... Werehog is a bad addition to sonic. Thats why gen wins this for me. I heard the point of "you guys dont talk about sa1-sa2" but that doesnt make any sense because those stages are fun and brief. SA1-2 Knuckles, Tails, Mechs, amy, hell even big are more fun than the werehog. PS: No sam was right 100%
In the end it's just experiences and opinions. I thought generations was extremely easy and short, I had fun playing but after beating the final boss I just ended playing there. Unleashed I had an amazing experience with it's more interesting level design (for me), amazing soundtrack, interesting new character, I didn't have anything against werehog and it didn't depend on nostalgia, because depending 100% on nostalgia just like generations is not that good.
Also Unleashed Sonic is much MUCH faster with his Boost and I've played both games, I literally have my Library's PS3 copy of SG so hard to deny I have it lol but I only have it because there's nothing else available ANYWHERE.

Both Games were incredibly fun but I’m going with Unleashed because they actually make you work for S ranks in both Day and Nifht staffed and I honestly love that they made it soft as your progress further into the story, Sonic Generations is way too easy in my opinion and doesn’t offer no upgrades or etc but still a great game. Just was too easy to beat and to get S ranks. The story was meh but the gameplay was phenomenal
Generations is better then Unleashed in terms of gameplay cuz they master is the best in there BUT, where Unleashed is better, the story/plot, music, the hub worlds and one of the best super sonic fights ever

In my time playing both games seemed boring, but after finishing Sonic 2 it started to grow on me, and now I love it. But Sonic CD is still boring to me.
I’d say Sonic CD. The levels are super explorable while having routes that are good for speed running. There’s multiple ways to complete the game such as getting the time stones, destroying badnik spawners, or both. Also metal > silver sonic.
Sonic 2 because the level design is more purposeful and Sonic CD is ugly and like you’re playing a pinball game with how many springs there are. But the levels look way too confusing and maze like.

I like to compare these games to food. Gens is like an amazingly well cooked steak, topped with the most extravagant sauce with amazing presentation and packed with flavor, but the steak is like very tiny with nothing much added with it. Unleashed is like a decent looking burger packed with tons of extra sides and fries, but the meat is covered with mold and half the fries are stale
I would give it to unleashed the game is more fun and interesting. the story never gets boring and there's so much to do in unleashed like do missions and talk to humans etc. but in generations you can't do much after completion. plus there's only 9 levels and the story isn't that good in my opinion. unleashed is a way better game.
@@user-fy1nq3nf1q Not really, he was only afraid because of the new threats especially the big tough guy with a Club, he just flew a distance however and kept watch but didnt stand around cowering, he was just afraid of their presence even when trying to tell them to settle down but aside from that, he actually helps you because he's with you in the HUB Worlds.

How is Shadow 05 better? That game was terrible. Unleashed has a superior storyline compared to Shadow 05. I’m not saying it’s the best, but it’s one of the bests. In terms of voice acting, yes, at least Jason gave Sonic emotions and how his portrayal is. Jason is like the OG Sonic compared to Roger (no offense, just never a fan of the current voice actors in terms of direction), they’re all cheap compared to the 4Kids, aside from Tails and Rouge, and no Mike Pollock doesn’t count cause he’s a 4Kids actor. Yes, I prefer when a game like that is longer. Mostly of how the execution goes. Don’t even compared Unleashed to the worst Sonic game ever (Forces)
In terms of personality, soul, characters, writing and plot- Sonic Unleashed is WAYYYY better than Generations. But, I kinda think generations has better gameplay and it’s a throwback game so whatever with the plot. It’s like a doctor who story, when the doctor meets another version of himself- they’re never THATTTTT good and heavily rely on fan-service and they’re typically on anniversary dates and big events. Just like Generations and to an extent... Mania and Forces, but that’s like if The 25th Doctor who anniversary special came out in 1984 instead of 1983, lol.

Devil may Cry 5, 2d games, Most fighting games, games with performance modes normally are above 30 or at 60. thats no excuse for sonic of all things to run 30. crash 4 runs 60 lmao. Ghost of tsushima runs 60 on ps5, Gow averages 50fps. Games that run well exist on console if you look for them

•The levels are extremely easy and short, and it's even funny when people complain about Forces for being easy and short but don't say a thing about Generations that is even easier and shorter. Unleashed forces you to be better at every level that passes, Generation's first level is the difficulty that you will see in every single level.
•The story in Generations is the most pathetic out of every 3D mainline Sonic game (Sonic's birthday and now rescue friends). Also, the kiss in 06 was the worst climax ever, but everyone cheering at two corpses of hedgehogs are almost as bad.
•The graphics are basically the same, but Generations gives the impression of being worse because it is more cartoony. I won't complain much on that aspect because like I said it is an "impression" not actually worse.
•The final boss in Generations is the weakest and even the boss that came before him was harder. The idea was nice but the execution just made him generic and easy.
•Most of the levels and bosses are unoriginal and those levels and bosses were done better in other games. What a lazy job, Sega.
•You could use the argument that there are more characters in Generations, but they are just there as background characters and have no importance at all. In Unleashed we had Pickles, Sonic, Chip and Tails. Even Amy was important in a certain part. The two Tails in Generations are just in cutscenes. Side missions do not count, because they are additional content and not part of the main content.
•The soundtrack in Unleashed is better. Yes, that was obvious considering the whole Generations soundtrack is just remixes, but I needed to say that.
Things that I like in Generations more:
•Egg dragoon: this boss was extremely easy in Unleashed, so I liked the new Generations version.
•No sun/moon medals: those things broke the pacing in my first playthrough in Unleashed, and it's one of the only problems I have with the game.
For me Generations would be the same if it was just a bunch of levels, because the story doesn't give you a reason to play the levels and why those levels specifically. Generations is a 7/10 for me, it has good levels but feels empty. It is also easy and short.
Eh...Generations feels more complete honestly.
But what Unleashed did (with the day time stages)were done in later game like Generations, also what Generations did it still does the best at so it's purpose isn't lost.

I'd give it to Unleashed. It's fully original, has a good story, has Jason, one of the top 5 OSTs, incredible art design, no Classic Sonic and it still has the best Boost formula level design.
Generations is great....mostly. Its greatest issue is its length. The game feels like it only celebrates Sonic's history at a medium level. 9 stages is just far too little.
It also has a practically non-existent story, and Planet Wisp is complete and utter trash and I want to burn it.

Sonic Unleashed is even after all these years, absolutely gorgeous. And not to mention a pretty engaging story. Chip wasn't a bad side character either. I also think the Werehog is pretty in depth with its combat but the levels themselves are just uninspired and fairly empty. If you are ripping off GoW you must also bring over the spectacle that comes with these character action games to make them more interesting especially if they are going to be so long. The day time levels were very well designed and increasingly get more difficult but more satisfying to master. Also loved the hubs, sometimes its nice to take it all in and explore a small areas and talk and interact with the folk your saving. Adds character and personality and doesn't feel empty. Dark Gaia is also a cooler looking monster to boot. Also just feels like your going on an adventure. Sonic also has a bit of an arc through his self doubt and frustration halfway through the story. Also I think it is the fastest Sonic's been, feels like Sonics only gotten slower after Colors. I'm also a fan of small details like the speed meter, call it a placebo but it does feel like its indicating I'm going faster than I actually am.
I Unleashed was my first game for PS2 and Xbox 360. Generation is my first game that got me into the franchise. But love Unleashed more than Generations. I am curious what other live debates that there could be.

Even the annoying parts I hate gets defended like theirs nothing defendable about the tornado levels and the QTEs. The Werehog itself is pretty much something you could defend as also most of the daytime stages. For now and I think I may can only speak for myself Unleashed gets a ton of praise and I don't see anyone who hates it really. I still think generations is the better game but it's also not enough to be a full package of a game in terms of playtime. Unleashed gets it right but I just don't see the Werehog as something fantastic. It is okay and some of the platforming can be fun but it's not as fun as running around as Sonic for sure. (I excuse my faulty english)

Been waiting for this Debate for a While😁 Unleashed for the Win tho, I grew up with both of these two games and revisited them recently and gotta say I used to see Generations as the best Sonic Games but after having fun with both the Day and Night Levels and enjoying the atmosphere of the game, I really loved the variety/dynamic of the gameplay. Day stages were fast paced and exciting while Night Stages had some chill beat them up action and cool platforming. I get the Werehog stages ain’t for everyone but they were honestly a lot of fun and had a fair challenge in my opinion. I still Love Generations tho lol

Definitely wouldn't say Unleashed was the better game. If you get a fresh save file and play through both games, Generations is much more refined and stream lined, with less annoying bumps and hills to climb.
There's always been a trend with games - a game is initially over hated in the fanbase, which then gets a retrospective look and becomes overrated. Unleashed and Gen 5 Pokemon comes to mind (not that they're bad or anything, it's just that people become a little too 'rose tinted').

Even back when I was a little kid playing this, the longest I've ever spent in one (not counting eggmanland) was Shamar night at about 15 minutes.
In Unleashed, going back to the hub worlds to open the daytime or nighttime Act 2s and 3s will help avoid being too stuck on medals. They aren’t necessary for the story to progress but they are new challenges that don’t require to repeat levels you don’t want to. But replaying speed levels for S ranks is fun

I’m not a fan of the werehog I think it’s incredibly boring, but I think the rest of unleashed is pretty good. Generations is overall good but it’s so short and almost feels half assed. It’s hard for me to say which game is better because I think they’re both flawed just in different ways. I almost think unleashed is better JUST because it’s longer, generations doesn’t even feel like a full game.

I couldnt finish sonic unleashed. Not because it was too difficult but because it wasnt interesting enough for me. I think Generations stages were more interesting because of nostalgia and presentation and the young sonic stages are really good too....
Werehog is a bad addition to sonic. Thats why gen wins this for me. I heard the point of "you guys dont talk about sa1-sa2" but that doesnt make any sense because those stages are fun and brief. SA1-2 Knuckles, Tails, Mechs, amy, hell even big are more fun than the werehog.

In the end it's just experiences and opinions. I thought generations was extremely easy and short, I had fun playing but after beating the final boss I just ended playing there. Unleashed I had an amazing experience with it's more interesting level design (for me), amazing soundtrack, interesting new character, I didn't have anything against werehog and it didn't depend on nostalgia, because depending 100% on nostalgia just like generations is not that good.
Also Unleashed Sonic is much MUCH faster with his Boost and I've played both games, I literally have my Library's PS3 copy of SG so hard to deny I have it lol but I only have it because there's nothing else available ANYWHERE.

As much as I love both games sonic unleashed is better, it had more levels and had an interesting story it was longer, and the boost formula in that game was actually fun. As for generations although it was pretty great ngl but it doesnt top unleashed although you can play as super sonic once you beat the game which is a downside on sonic unleashed's part but it was still pretty good, the only thing thats stopping it from being just as good or better than unleashed was the lack of stages, sure there are 9 stages in total and 1i acts in all thats pretty short for a sonic game, if they're gonna remaster generations they mught need to add more stages sure it'll take longer but I think alot of people would like that maybe 2 stages from each game starting from sonic 2.

Both Games were incredibly fun but I’m going with Unleashed because they actually make you work for S ranks in both Day and Nifht staffed and I honestly love that they made it soft as your progress further into the story, Sonic Generations is way too easy in my opinion and doesn’t offer no upgrades or etc but still a great game. Just was too easy to beat and to get S ranks. The story was meh but the gameplay was phenomenal

In my time playing both games seemed boring, but after finishing Sonic 2 it started to grow on me, and now I love it. But Sonic CD is still boring to me.
I’d say Sonic CD. The levels are super explorable while having routes that are good for speed running. There’s multiple ways to complete the game such as getting the time stones, destroying badnik spawners, or both. Also metal > silver sonic.
Sonic 2 because the level design is more purposeful and Sonic CD is ugly and like you’re playing a pinball game with how many springs there are. But the levels look way too confusing and maze like.

I got a debate idea, Sonic Mania Plus or Freedom Planet which is a better game?
I like to compare these games to food. Gens is like an amazingly well cooked steak, topped with the most extravagant sauce with amazing presentation and packed with flavor, but the steak is like very tiny with nothing much added with it.
Unleashed is like a decent looking burger packed with tons of extra sides and fries, but the meat is covered with mold and half the fries are stale

How is Shadow 05 better? That game was terrible. Unleashed has a superior storyline compared to Shadow 05. I’m not saying it’s the best, but it’s one of the bests.
In terms of voice acting, yes, at least Jason gave Sonic emotions and how his portrayal is. Jason is like the OG Sonic compared to Roger (no offense, just never a fan of the current voice actors in terms of direction), they’re all cheap compared to the 4Kids, aside from Tails and Rouge, and no Mike Pollock doesn’t count cause he’s a 4Kids actor.

In terms of personality, soul, characters, writing and plot- Sonic Unleashed is WAYYYY better than Generations. But, I kinda think generations has better gameplay and it’s a throwback game so whatever with the plot. It’s like a doctor who story, when the doctor meets another version of himself- they’re never THATTTTT good and heavily rely on fan-service and they’re typically on anniversary dates and big events. Just like Generations and to an extent... Mania and Forces, but that’s like if The 25th Doctor who anniversary special came out in 1984 instead of 1983, lol.
Unleashed kinda trumps Generations in my opinion.

The whole youre used to 30fps jab was weak. Devil may Cry 5, 2d games, Most fighting games, games with performance modes normally are above 30 or at 60. thats no excuse for sonic of all things to run 30. crash 4 runs 60 lmao. Ghost of tsushima runs 60 on ps5, Gow averages 50fps. Games that run well exist on console if you look for them

it only runs trash one ps3, it does lag a little bit on 360 but it only lags on adabat day act 1

I like both games and they are both in my top 10 favorites but generations is thr better game in my opinion.
Terms of first playthrough i got more enjoyment from generations
Also the adventure game are better in my opinion

I agree with Matt that Unleashed is better but I severely wish he'd stop going on about S ranks, especially when it comes to the difficulty of the game. I think the levels themselves provide a healthy combo between good design and difficulty but all Matt seems to go on about is the S ranks rather than the level's difficulty itself.
