      I’d argue SA2, there’s a ton of secret ways to get more points to get an A rank. Unleashed essentially has a no hit policy to getting an A rank on the daytime stages which is fine and I don’t think it’s bad but I like how even though SA2 was linear there are tons of secrets to find that reward creativity and skill

    This is perfectly said, excellent job! I am also happy to see some appreciation for 06s ranking, I was VERY surprised how challenging it was to get S ranks. SA2s A Ranking is the best in my opinion because it requires you to be fully engaged and requires all of your attention to get those A ranks no matter the amount of time in the games. Generations on the other hand gives you an S rank for basically just not dying..and takes a lot of the inner satisfaction of getting that S rank due to it being basically a participation trophy, that’s my two cents on it!

    As someone who's actually gotten all S-ranks for Sonic Colors, I can say that game did it unbelievably well. I think there was only two stages in the entire game that I got an S-rank on my first try, and the rest I had to master with the use of Wisps, speed, and red ring/ring collecting. Sure it was infuriatingly demanding, but it made me super proud to see that sparkly gray S as a reward.
    When I went back to Generations, I was taken aback by just how simple S-ranks are to achieve in that game, not to mention your ranking gets boosted up a rank simply because of a "perfect bonus", which I thought was so unnecessary.
    Weirdly enough I think Forces had some challenge to get an S-rank on a handful of stages, but I hated how the lowest rank you could get was a C-rank.
    I can't really speak my mind with the other games as I never bothered for ranking systems in Sonic games until Colors, though I will say that none of them were a pushover with S-ranks and/or A-ranks, which was a good thing.

    I 100% agree that a good ranking system gives satisfaction, I love mastering the stages of Sonic Unleashed and then receiving an S rank. The same goes for SA2 and Heroes. Colors is kinda mixed because what gives you S ranks is sitting around getting color bonuses, spamming quick step in QS sections, and getting other bonuses like drift in those sections. I wish it was more based on stage mastery other than spamming what gives you a bonus score

    Important video! And yes I hard agree, S ranks are very important as an indicator that you have properly experienced all there is to experience, in terms of all the design choices the developers prepared for players. Aspects like not getting hit, not being too slow, killing enough enemies, not hitting civilians (Black knight) and more of each level section!! Btw I think Black knight has a fantastic ranking system if you want to check deeper into that! It has an honorable knight parameter where you don't attack the backs of enemies, and dont harm civilians, and ofc giving rings to civilians and such

    "Sonic Colors you have the option just complete it fast and get a shit rank and have the ego of 'hey, I got a fast time' *or* you can have the ego of 'hey, I beat this level and I mastered it with all the level gimmicks and all the wisps.' You can do that. You can have all sides. Sonic Generations only has one side, and that is time. Sonic Colors has everything."
    And unrelated to that, a ranking mod for SA1 would be interesting. (If there isn't one already)

    The main issue I see with Sonic Adventure 2's ranking system is that you have to know what you've gotta go out of your way to do, and it's a lot more cryptic feeling than how Sonic Colors handled that. If you haven't memorized where certain things are, you're basically stuck no matter how hard you play the level... and Metal Harbor is actually a good example of what looks like bad ranking design, with the short tunnel section with absurd bonuses that could significantly boost your rank if you A) get lucky or B) have somehow memorized the movements you need to make in this incredibly slippery section.

In the case of Colors DS, you mainly get S Ranks by clearing the stages fast, but you WILL NOT get an S Rank on your first go. I would prefer things closer to the level of sa2, but maybe just a tad less difficult. I don’t want to take the challenge away from the people who love perfecting and completing the most difficult challenges, but it would be nice if I didn’t have to be a god at the game to get the highest rank also.

    There is one thing Sonic Forces doesn't get enough credits personally. You said that Sonic can do like the relics in Crash Bandicoot, and make you have to complete the stage super fast. Well, while Sonic Forces has pretty easy S ranks, the time trial missions are exactly that. They make you complete the stage as fast as possible, and beat the time. And even as soon as Ghost Town, those missions are very hard in my opinion. You need to perfect your run, and not lose time. Of course not every stages have those missions, while every stages have a S rank, but at least there is some mastery of the stage required in the game, and is in my opinion the best part about Sonic Forces.

    The first Sonic Adventure had a basic ranking system as well. It took the form of Ranked Missions. So in order to get the A Rank, you had to first complete B Rank run, and to get access to that, you’d need to complete the C Rank mission. Generally, they were the same stage, but with a stricter time limit or score requirement. SA2 also had a similar mission structure with the Mystic Medley missions for example, requiring five different runs through each stage.

      That's not really a ranking system, though. It's not rating your performance, but giving you alternate objectives.

    • @Red7Ent
      @Red7Ent 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Tom-jw7ii it was essentially the prototypical ranking system, and what would eventually evolve into a proper ranking system. It was certainly not a true ranking system. I agree.

      @Tom-jw7ii 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Red7Ent Maybe you could consider it a predecessor, but it really shares no similarities with a ranking system except for the lettering. Also considering that the system still exists in SA2 along with a separate ranking system, I think it's safe to say they're completely different things.

    • @Red7Ent
      @Red7Ent 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Tom-jw7ii I see it as the team experimenting with ways of challenging the player, and implementing it again in SA2 to provide different missions (SA1 was generally just increased difficulty challenges as opposed to the variety in SA2 like Mystic Medley for example). I think they weren’t sure which they wanted to settle with, so they tried both in SA2. Personally, I see the ranking system and the mission stages as two separate evolutions of the same idea. Over time, the two became more and more distinct from one another, and now we have things like Red Rings and other in-stage objectives that are the modern evolution of the mission based system in SA2 whereas the ranking system we still have today has largely gone unchanged since SA2, but again, I see both as an evolution of the one in SA1.

    Also sonic games replay-ability wise are more than just their ranking systems & generations’ is no exception cause it still has great replay value in the form of the hard mode bosses, extra missions, the Red star rings for unlockables etc.

    Unleashed Ranking on the Wii I like it a lot and uses the emblems for something more optional. There, the higher the rank, the more emblems you get. The more emblems you get, the more side stuff (cinematics, music, concept art, lives, etc.).
    How do you get an S rank there?
    Day stages: Reach the goal under X minutes
    Night stages: Number of enemies killed required, reach the goal under x minutes, and collect X quantity of rings
    You'd think it sounds simple, but it is a better way and a simple way to make the rankings, and also hard. Believe me, getting the S ranks in the day stages requires you to know the level perfectly and making almost no mistakes.

    The only problem I have with Adventure 2's ranking system is the fact you can get an A rank automatically by collecting every ring in a stage. Granted, in a lot of stages, that's probably down right impossible. But the fact that it's there is an issue. Generations is far too easy S rank, granted. I like the idea of having to complete the stage without dying to get it, if you do the best you'll get is an A rank. That's a good part of it. But it lacks the difficult of Adventure 2's ranking system

    the redeeming quality of Forces' ranking system is that it counts how many times you die, making it automatically a great ranking system, too bad it was in a linear short game.

    I agree with everything you said, except for Colors. The game itself is fine and all, but the ranking system is one of my least favorites. The reason for that is simply because of the wisps. Even if the ranking system in Colors is based on skill, I wouldn’t know that because I’ve perfected many of the levels and I would still get an A or B. The reason for that is because I’d always ignore the wisps, which, for me anyway, were huge pace breakers. However, they were crucial for getting S ranks because of the amount of points they gave. So essentially, they wanted you to speed through the stages with minimal error while also stopping your progress by forcing you to screw around as a wisp to get a lot more points. And that killed it for me.

    I dunno, i liked them, i think the fact that you get an Rank worse than S in that game kinda makes you feel pathetic for losing an easy challenge.
