@@49Macman Wont work much as a "professional" mic...
These are usually omni directional, and not known for their depth...and they get very plosive-y
Other than that...not going to do a bad job...

great video! definitely subscribing for more
You mentioned how some microphones are being designed for both USB and XLR. Correct me if im wrong, but a USB mic essentially has the audio interface built into it right? Wouldnt this mean the USB&XLR mics would also have an audio interface built in, and would this cause the product to be inferior to its XLR standalone counter part?

    • @DarkCornerStudios

The xlr connection would bypass the DAC...meaning it would operate as all other XLR mics.
Not a bad idea if you are trying to save money!

If one were to choose the XLR option, which type of input do you recommend or prefer to physically connect the preamp/DAC/mixer to your PC? I would hope any recommendations you have to offer work on Linux as I do not run Windows.

      Thats a great question.
Most interfaces come with a USB cable for connection...or thunderbolt...but thats quite rare.
As for the OS...i do not know.
While I would imagine there are interfaces with Linux friendly drivers...i have never actively looked for it..
Though after a quick Google search...there are several...so you are in luck

    • @DarkCornerStudios
      @DarkCornerStudios  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

There really is no difference in quality...just quality of mics.
The cable used to connect a mic wouldnt impact the quality of the signal

There can actually be a difference in quality. Referring to a microphone as a usb or xlr, doesn't tell you anything about the mics. Its just a connection option. In order to get information onto a computer you need a mic and an AD converter. (In the video he calls what should be an AD converter a DAC. A DAC comes into play at some point after the PC is done processing the information digitally.
Here's how quality comes into play. The first thing is the mic itself. The quality of the device in the mic that actually picks up the sound. That can vary greatly from one mic to the next. After that, you have balanced vs unbalanced or single ended (SE) operation. If you have a mic with an xlr output, that implies a balanced connection. Balanced needs 3 separate conductors to work. 2 signal conductors and a ground. An xlr connection has 3 pins. Its also worth noting that you don't need to use an xlr connector for balanced operation. Any 3 conductor connection will do, such as TRS. From there you connect the mic to your AD converter using a balanced cable. Depending on the type of mic you have, you may have to u

Hello Dark Corner Studios, I am trying to figure out why the person I am talking to on my Mac via Zoom or Facetime hears static. It appears though that my Iphone works with Facetime. I do have an interface for an XLR mic, but need to set it up. Do you think the XLR mic would fix the problem? Or, should I get other equipment? Nice vid. Thanks.

Make sure your volume isnt too loud.
      Also...interface for a USB Mic?
An XLR mic will allow your computer to use the audio from the mic...so yes...it would cure that problem...

@@DarkCornerStudios I wanted to follow up on my question. It appears that my 30 year old SURE mic isn't working within my Mbox mini anymore for some reason, so I am working on testing it on an amplifier to make sure it's not just me and my incorrect settings. I need to make arrangements for that. It's been a real long time since I've used it, so it might be in the settings somewhere? However, I fear that it might be the mic though. I will let you know. How will the sound quality be?

      The sound quality isn't great.
Just make sure you use a condenser mic so you dont have to run the gain up too high.
