  • The lighting effects filter in Photoshop has come a long way, and it borrows many concepts from the world of 3D. However, you don't need 3D to create some very dramatic lighting effects very quickly with this often overlooked filter.

    Hi there , this is a amazing tutorial ! Thanks!
    But I have some question about lighting effects
    How to prevent automatic blur when you used lighting effect ?
    Recently I try to used this method to my architecture project but it alway cause my picture a little bit blur
    It will be great if you know the way to solve it

    Doh! One question. Is there a way to save your own lighting presets? It used to do this in Photoshop CS 3. I can find no way to do that in CC. Please?

    Thank you very much, Mr. Hoffman. The last version of Photoshop I had was 3.0. When I first ran the lighting effects, I thought, "OH NO! WHAT HAVE THEY DONE!". You've explained it succintly and got me on my feet. I feel emboldened, so I thank you for this great tutorial.
    Ever think of going pro? :)
    Seriously. This is good example of how a tutorial should look, sound, speed, and have a logical order.
    p.s. Oops! Almost forgot. What are the dimensions for those light strengths?
    Jolly good!

    Question. I tried the effects as you taught and it is great. However, when I go to the layer that I am trying to use a pin light, all of sudden after I hit ok, there is a stripe in the middle of the image. Why does it do that and is there a fix?

    • @MichaelHoffman

      Can you try on another image? What video card are you using? Are your video drivers up to date?

      Sorry for the late response but I am in the middle of building another channel. What I ended up doing was covering the pic to a jpg then it worked fine. But as a layer in a psd, it was having a horrible result with the line.

    The lighting effects in my photoshop cc doesn't work and resets my workspace. How come his works?

      Are you using 64 bit or 32? My 64 bit is working fine. The 32 bit did not. 'Twas a real pisser to have to bump up when cash allowed.

    I'm confused. I have Photoshop CC and there is no Lighting Effects option anymore in the menu. How do you have it?

    • @MichaelHoffman
      @MichaelHoffman  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Lighting Effects require a compatible graphics card, with Photoshop’s “Preferences > Performance > Use Graphics Processor” option enabled. If you don’t have this checkbox selected, try turning it on. If you can’t, you might not have a powerful enough graphics card to run the 3D features including Lighting Effects.

  • @RuthieMadison

    Aparraent;y I don't have enough RAM memory to use the lighting effect

    Phooey on this. I don't have any of the controls he shows (the circles to move stuff around), and certainly not the 3D Orb. *sigh* I have CC, but it's 2015. I guess I have to get the latest version?

    • @MichaelHoffman
      @MichaelHoffman  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Diane Lynne Do you have a compatible graphics card, and do you have “Use Graphics Processor” enabled in Preferences > Performance? I recorded this with PS CC in 2013, well prior to CC 2015.

    • @rianrog
      @rianrog 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, "Use Graphics Processor" is checked. I don't know anything about a "compatible graphics card". I'm just using the Photoshop CC 2015 software that I purchased when I bought my Mac. Is that something I have to purchase extra?? I'm pretty frustrated right now anyway. I'm trying to update my software to the latest version of Photoshop CC and keep getting error messages. And Creative Cloud's support is not user friendly.

    • @MichaelHoffman
      @MichaelHoffman  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      OK, if that option is checked, you have a compatible card. What exactly do you see when you start the filter? The 3D orb is only visible for an Infinite light; the spot light and point light have different controls. I'm glad to help you further if needed; TH-cam comments aren't the most expeditious way... let me know.

    • @rianrog
      @rianrog 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I follow your directions for "Infinite Light" and I don't see the circle to drag around. I don't see any of those circles you talk about in each step. I'm using a Wacom pen tablet. Does that make a difference? All my settings look just like yours, but no circles to move around.

    • @rianrog
      @rianrog 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I updated my software today to Photoshop CC 2017. Still don't have any circles to move around. lol I give up.

    Nice description so thanks but your final image doesn't really work in a logical way. It could but you've left it unfinished...
