    I have one similar to that model that came out in 68. Mine doesn't have the hole in the wall, and has a curved blade instead of the pen blade. Also where it has the teepee and the word CAMPING those are underlined, and the shield around the cross is shaped differently. It was given to me by my grandmother maybe 40 tears ago.

    Great video. Got at least a dozen various SAKs here but didn't realize the saw dates back so far. Had 2 holes in drywall to patch recently, used my Huntsman saw to make them square-shape. Worked amazing and still sharp like new. Handy for occasional urban use, too.

  • @jelkel25

    The Camper has been a sort of first aid kit for the huge amount of thorn bushes in the UK. Last year's go dry and mouldy in spring/early summer and cause infection quite easily. The tweezers, small pen blade and even the awl are usually enough to get the ends of the thorns out of skin and some disinfectant will usually avoid infection. So it's probably the most taken out knife I own but not often used. I like the bear one, got a dark blue promotional Camper for £14 which is less than most RRs in the UK.

      JHAYKHAY25 in 1938, the very first use of Penicillin on a human was by Howard Florey on a Police Constable called Albert Alexander. Unfortunately, though there was some immediate improvement, they didn’t have enough Penicillin and he died. But, what of? Sepsis after scratching his face on a thorn in his garden.... if only he’d had a SAK and some antiseptic!

    Great video I really love Swiss Army knives. The cellidor scales
    go farther back than you stated, I have a knife that was first made
    in 1946 that has cellidor scales with exposed rivets. You should
    contact Hobie he could probably give you a better date. Your
    Wenger Backpacker is a Backpacker II the original had the Phillips
    screwdriver also if the straight screwdriver has the patent on
    It that is for the locking mechanism which Victorinox has continued
    on the Delement models that is why they have no half stop like
    the newer Victorinox models have. Keep up the great videos

    • @KnifeChatswithTobias
      @KnifeChatswithTobias  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The Story of Cellidor is a little complex. Victorinox first used Celluloid in 1937. They switched to Cellulose Acetate Butyrate (CAB) around 1944. Around this same time, Wenger, also switched to a type a CAB they Trademarked as as Tinite. in 1952, Victorinox was given a patent for its new formula of CAB which they named Cellidor. They also patented Grilon, a type of Nylon at the same time. Thanks for the info on the Backpacker (Backpacker II). The story of Wenger knives is even more confusing than Victorinox. I'm still looking for a decent SAK with exposed rivets. Does that 1946 have the safety style can opener?

  • @MinstrelOnTheRun
    @MinstrelOnTheRun 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Great video on the history of a wonderful Vic model; it regularly rotates through my EDC. Even though I seldom use the saw, it is a thin enough layer that the knife can compete with 2-layer/Alox models for pocketability. I do wish that the 91mm model contained the fine screwdriver on the back layer of the saw, or that they made an 84mm version now that the Walker model has re-introduced a smaller saw.

    I have a Camper that is just a little later than yours, it has the smooth corkscrew, a flea market find for €3.00! I like the SAK saws as one of my hobbies is stick making and the saws are great for taking and interesting stick while out on a hike. Also have the Huntsman and Outrider, both with that great saw.
    The Bear Necessities is great.

  • @hitchpost5822
    @hitchpost5822 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    That's interesting the only knife I know of that used Grilon was
    the Wenger soldiers knives from the 1950's. Yes my model 1946
    produced from 46 to 51 has the safety can opener. I don't know
    when Victorinox first started importing to the USA. This knife
    was bought in Switzerland by a man from Belgium who
    emigrated to America in the 1950's. It is like a huntsman model
    only with nickel silver spacers, nickel silver tipped tweezers
    and ivory toothpick. It is heavier than it's modern relative.
    It is also the star of my Swiss Army knife collection.

    • @KnifeChatswithTobias
      @KnifeChatswithTobias  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That can opener only showed up for a year or two. I assume they got hit with a cease and desist notice from Imperial Knife Company as they held a patent on it! Very cool knife. I can see why it is the star of your collection!

    Very cool edition of the Camper, Bear Necessities, love it. The Camper is a very good light camp chores knife and should never be underestimated. In general I like the Explorer for any outdoor every day carry. But the Ranger is what I take for extended nights out because it is the smallest SAK that includes both the wood and metal saws in the toolset. Thanks Tobias.

    For me, the biggest FAILURE in most of these knife examples, is the wine screw. FOR ME, I do NOT ever drink wine from a bottle when I am out camping or scouting or working in the field, woods or at the beach.
    THe knife that is ALWAYS with me...on my key chain, is the SAK FIELDMASTER. I love this design!

    • @KnifeChatswithTobias
      @KnifeChatswithTobias  ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m very much firmly in the corkscrew camp, partly to carry the small screwdriver but also for several other reasons. The back mounted Phillips has failed me on way too many occasions whereas the 2D Phillips on the can opener has proven to save the day on many occasions. That said, the joy of Swiss Army Knives is that there are numerous designs and people can find the tools that beast set their needs and preferences.

    The Huntsman is the best SAK/Victorinox in my humble opinion. Just because it has the saw and scissors, which is just the right combination of tools, weight and thickness. Maybe if they slid a file/metal saw in there i might change my mind, as long as it didn't add too much weight and size. I don't think they do a model with those four tools in particular, unless someone knows different.👍🏼

    Hello. always carried my climber until last friday when i got a huntsman because i wanted the saw. I'm not sure the extra weight and width is justified for edc. I may carry the climber in town and the huntsman out of town. Then again , in the woods and on hikes i carry my Atlas. Not sur yet. they are all so similar yet different that the choice is difficult. I think i will stop my collection of SAKs there. Exept i want a classic SD in Alox. So who knows. All the best.

    Still my favorite victorinox after all these years, its small enough to edc but has all the tools id ever need in a day, i hate the idea of spending big money on a folding knife, its gonna get delegated to trivial things like opening boxes and cutting food. But at 25 bucks this has a knife, a smaller knife for boxes, a good bottle and can opener, and a small saw that is surpraingly good at bushcraft stuff. Its my perfect edc knife, when im actually camping i opt out for a leatherman surge but for 1 day hikes and fishing trips my camper is always by my side.

    Thank you. You have partially answered a question for me. I found a camper at a local pawn shop in good condition for one dollar. Posted a video on it and another one I picked up for 10 dollars. Video title A preppers score. Anyway..the camper I bought I wasn’t sure when it was made. The reamer does not have the sewing eye. Based on some info you posted here tells me it’s at least pre 1985 if I understand that correctly. I’m not sure where you found that bit of info but thank you for sharing this.
