    VTEC explanation video: • What is VTEC and How D...
    I think this might just about complete my valve adjustment videos on Honda engines. There are only a couple more that I can think of that I haven't covered like the Vigor 5 cylinder engine and the DOHC VTEC found in the NSX (that will be a fun one trust me) but that's about it. As you can see in the video this valve adjustment requires a special tool. You don't have to use the same one that I used in the video but you won't be able to accomplish this procedure without some sort of special tool. Once again make sure the engine is cold and it's probably not a bad idea to run back through them after you go through the first time just to make sure everything is still in spec, it's strange how one revolution of the crank shaft can change things. Otherwise good luck.

    Hey Eric,
    the B18B (non-VTEC) that comes with the RS/LS/SE Integra makes about 142 hp @ 6300 rpm. The B18C (VTEC) that comes with the GS-R makes about 170 hp @ 7600 rpm. The B18C (VTEC) that comes with the Type R makes 197 hp @ 8000 rpm.

    I still remember my first valve adjustment I left them wayyyy loose and the car ran like a lawn mower. No power and ran very rough. It took me a couple more tries but finally got it right and it ran buttery smooth. Very good videos I've watched so many of your videos and you are GREAT!! Thanks so much and keep up the good work!

    Excellent video. You don't **need** the special tools but they make the job a lot easier. I did this on a customer's 94' Honda GSR today and it really cleaned up a lot of head noise as well as facilitated a smoother acceleration and idle rhythm.

    Thanks for the great video Eric! My only suggestion is at 3:38 to put something between the pliers and the valve cover (like a strip of cardboard etc) so you can avoid the risk of marring the paint.

    Most other makes use hydraulic lifters which don't require adjustment however valve timing is not as accurate. As for not adjusting them the valve train might get a little noisy but that's about it.

    great video! liked how you said from the beginning not try doing it without a special tool. Of course I know people who are still doing it, but you prepared us, so whoever tries to perform adjustment will do it right
    It would be great if you could do a cranshaft pulley replacement or just removal/reinstallation showing how to properly brake the engine in order to remove it. I don't believe I saw this procedure on you channel, but still might be wrong.

    i always wrap some electrical tape on the feeler gauge for the exhaust side (on the end you hold onto not the end you stick in the gap) just to make then easier to identify it can be easy to mix them up when switching back and forth

    It's worth noting that you absolutely must wait until the engine is cool to adjust the valves. Due to the expanding/contracting nature of metal components, honda recommends the engine always be below 100 degrees F before adjusting valves, or you will NOT be within spec under normal driving temperatures.

  • @jungapo2

    eric, thanks for this video. i hope you can read this message. if the intake clearance is .006 to .007 in. and the exhaust clearance is .007 to .008 in, it is better to use the lower number to prevent burning the valve and also make it less noisy?

    On most vehicles the water pump is driven by the timing belt, and it is customary to replace the water pump while you are ther,e to save work in the future. Replacing the water pump causes air pockets to form on the engine side of the cooling system, which need to be washed out to prevent overheating when you restart the engine after the job is done. By 'burping' the system the cooling system is cleared of air.

    Honda Bond is used to take up the extra gap that will appear between the Cylinder Head and the Rocker Cover/Cam Cover Gasket. I normally apply Honda Bond to the Cylinder Head, just to make sure its in the right places and will be in the corners. You only need a very small amount of Honda Bond as it goes a very long way. If there is Honda Bond when you take the cover off, clean off the old stuff and put a new lot back on as it needs to stick to both surfaces to seal.

    any time you do any work involving the valve train or cam timing i like to rotate the engine at least one full rotation by hand if you messed up and have a valve hitting a piston you will catch it before starting the engine it only takes a couple of minutes and gives a lot of extra piece of mind

  • @ericthecarguy
    @ericthecarguy  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Because they use a solid valve train instead of a hydraulic. Most engines use a hydraulic valve train with oil filled lifters. These work also but valve timing is not as accurate.

    Great Video !
    The first time I adjusted my valves on my B18C1 , I was checking the clearance between the top of the valve and the adjusting screw, not on the cam lobe. Helms Factory Manual and your video both show the correct way..... Sweet!
    It was habit from working on the D-series civic engines. LOL
    Your spot on with the more RPM equals more HP
    here is the equation -> hp = (torque * RPM) / 5250
    RPM also stands for Ruins Peoples Motors LOL
    Keep up the good work and Stay Dirty !

    @frdbtr 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great Vid. Couple things. There are marks on the crankshaft pulley and the camshaft gears that show tdc for cylinder 1. Second. Crankshaft hp for the type r is 190, crankshaft hp for the GSR is 170 hp (USDM). The difference between the 2 motors is cam design, valve size, different intake manifold design. And as you pointed out the Type R revs higher. You couldn't change the rev limit on a GSR and get Type r hp without changing cams.

  • @coltenW1
    @coltenW1 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Eric just random facts to add to your type R differences to the GSR, the GSR and type R are very much similar, some of the very small differences being the balanced rod caps, the crankshaft is weighed differently (I believe the counter weights are actually bigger than the gsr) The main and rod bearings are different sizes so when the engine revs higher nothing clamps down and chokes oil passages, pistons are higher compression, slightly different cams, it also has a single stage intake manifold similar to the 96-00 Civic SI with the B16A2, and the head has a slight port and polish job... I believe a stock gsr's rev limit is 8,200rpms and I think the Type R's is somewhere closer to 8,500 or maybe more. As far as I know those are the only differences, I'm sure there probably more but figured I would throw what I know out there :)

    my b18c has timing marks on cam and pulley i like to double check cams like you did !
    also you can bend a 10mm wrench instead to buy a special tool ( poor mans special tool lol ! )
    always remember guys looser clearance makes your valves ticking crazy.
    too small clearance can burn valves !
    hondabond ftw !!

    Using feeler gauges, especially for valve adjustment, is one of those skills that is hard to learn without physical, hands on instruction from someone who knows what they're doing. "how much drag?" "some, but not too much...."

  • @michaelovitch
    @michaelovitch 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Valve adjustment is necessary when you have solid lifters.
    Others brands can have hydraulic lifters wich automatically adjust the valve clearance thanks to the oil pressure.
    2 different applications.
    You have to know that solid lifters are better for performance because oil pressure,viscosity do not affect the max valve lift,so the air flow......
