    Discouraging birds from triggering the Havahart 1083 Squirrel Trap
    or stealing the Peanut Butter :
    I cut a wood scrap approx. 3/4 " by 1.5 " to the exact width of the trap.
    (I cut the ends at a slight angle.)
    I do this so I can jam the wood into the trap in a way that it is just
    tight enough that it can not easily be removed by an animal prying it.
    I then screw 3 wood screws completely through the 3/4" width,
    equidistant across the 7" width of the wood scrap.
    Then I get 3 16.9 oz Pepsi plastic bottles and cut the end
    (with the bottle cap) off. (approx 1.25 ")
    Then I drill a small hole through the center of the 3 bottle caps
    and attach the caps to the 3 screws in the wood.
    Them I screw the ends of the Pepsi bottles into their caps
    that are secured to the wood.
    Then I place peanut butter inside the 3 plastic caps. and the ends.
    * * * * Then I take this assembly and place it backwards up
    against the far end of the trap. * * * *
    If you do this right, the birds wont be able to access the peanut
    butter because there is not enough room for their beaks to
    reach around and then inside the plastic bottle caps.
    I also cover the entire back of the trap and the back/top
    portion of the trap with an approx. 7" wide "L" shaped piece
    of sheet metal, so that the birds can't reach their head through
    the back and eat the peanut butter from the outside.
    I drill holes through the sheet metal and use electrical ties to
    secure it to the trap. The sheet metal on the top portion of the
    trap prevents the peanut butter from getting wet when it rains hard.
    Squirrels tend to find food via their sense of smell so they will find
    the peanut butter in the bottle caps, even when they can not see the PB.
    I also place a couple of peanuts within their shells inside with
    the peanut butter to further prevent the birds from getting all the PB.
    Some day I should probably write a book about trapping grey squirrels.

    When people buy Havahart traps, they should use a permanent black marker to
    write the model number(which is always on the box) somewhere on the trap.
    Then after you throw out the box and later decide to do a video, you will know
    the model number of the trap you are demonstrating and you can include that
    in the video name. I have no idea why Havahart does not stamp every trap
    with the model number, so people would have this info for later reference.

    You need to take a squirrel three miles away from where you trapped him or he will come back. They have an instinct just like “LASSIE”.

    • @ccdogpark
      @ccdogpark 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That depends on how much bus fare you give them.
      If they have to run all the way back to your place on their own,
      you might beat them by a couple of hours.

    The squirrel will bite you if you get your hands to close.

      He might, but there is a metal plate around the handle, so you can move the cage without any risk of getting bit.

      @@glenmiller1437 I like that safety plate. Wild mammals can carry rabies. Squirrels almost never get it, but they can deliver a nasty bite. I use only Havaharts. They are durable and well made. I've caught skunk, possum, squirrel, and feral cats in them.

    I'd rather 'have a dart' than have a heart, squirls are technically rodents and destuctive, gas 'm get rid of them, give no quarter you tree huggers..Robert at 67.

    Those are good traps, I've used them. Look up the local regulations though, in my area I am not allowed to relocate the animal once it is trapped.

      They are eating the nuts and leaving freely. I put it in the grass. Does the surface need to be flat?

    • @SunnnyDay
      @SunnnyDay 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@yophone3109 They will just pick up nuts and leave. Peanut butter is used because they need to do a little work to get at it, that action provides the force to trigger the trap. I have an earlier model than this one, so I added a 4 ounce fishing weight to the trigger plate, taking away that much that the squirrel has to do. I also put the peanut butter in something about 1/2 the size of a sewing thimble, also screwed to the plate, to make them work at that. Those 2 mods work 100 %, no missing bait, no escapes.

      @srchnfrcj 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@yophone3109 Flat surfaces are definitely best. A trap that wobbles may cause a leery squirrel to retreat. Peanut butter works great on grays. I like peanut butter since it catches skunks and possum. Its versatile and paste baits like that stick and make the animal have to work harder to take it & spend more time in the cage, furthering your odds of a successful catch. Sunny Day is spot on with their advice. I use 1084 Easy Sets for squirrels and dial the sensitivity setting to high. Haven't missed one yet. I use 1085s on skunks and possum.

      @@srchnfrcj Thank you. I will move it. I set it and put weights on it. Its closed but no catch. It may be too sensitive with the magnetic weights I put on it. On secure ground it should work much better. Thank you!

    • @srchnfrcj
      @srchnfrcj 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@yophone3109 No problem. I caught a gray this morning on JIF peanut butter. I have slate rocks around my outdoor aquarium. I just sit one of those on top of the back of the trap once I have it on steady ground. Rocks and stones are part of the natural environment so I just use them and they've done fine. I went a size up from the 1083. I like 1084s for squirrels. They will also catch smaller skunks too,, but you would have to dial the sensitivity down some for a skunk as they are bigger than squirrels. If the sensitivity is too high, the trap could fire too soon before the animal is in all the way & close on the animals back, in which case they usually back out. I had a big skunk do that to me in a 1084. I sized up to the 1085 and got him the next time out. If you think the sensitivity setting is an issue, you can always use a twig to reach in through the cage and test the sensitivity until you have it tuned for your quarry of choice before you leave it out there. Good luck!

    Frankly. I have no use for boneheads that live trap their pesky squirrels.... and then release them in my field! It happen way more often than you could imagine. It's a pest;
    Be responsible and kill the dang thing and dispose of its corps all on your own!

      The only sensible way to dispose of grey squirrels is to consistently
      take the carcasses to the exact same spot in a nearby woods and
      allow the scavengers to prey on them.
      When you do that, you contribute to our biodiversity. Win-Win
