  • In this first of three episodes on God's law, Jon and Justin talk about the distinction between the law and the gospel. The law and the gospel are both contained in the Old and New Testaments, respectively. The law and the gospel are distinct and ought not be mixed--and, yet, they are complementary in God's economy of salvation. The guys introduce the listener to this historically Reformed doctrine and consider why it is so important.
    Semper Reformanda: Jon and Justin consider how covenant theology and law/gospel distinction complement one another in a Reformed theological framework. The guys talk about how useful these tools are for rightly understanding the Scriptures.

    I just got done reading Deuteronomy 28 last night and this ties in nicely with this discussion. It speaks of being blessed if you perfectly obey the law and being cursed if you don't. What I found interesting is that the part speaking of blessing encompasses only one paragraph, whereas the curse encompasses five paragraphs. And the curse is so shockingly bad it should terrify anyone who would even want to attempt to attain righteousness by obedience to the law.

    This has been good to hear and remind my heart of. Coming from a dispensational upbringing, hearing the distinction between law and gospel is so helpful to remind us that we cannot work for salvation or even for God to look favorably on us. But it also gives us a consistent view of ALL of scripture. Lovin it! Looking forward to the next couple episodes. :)

    Thanks so much for what you are doing! I’ve got a question. How do I explain to a person who holds Piper’s position on final salvation the meaning of verses like “If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off” or “he who perseveres to the end will be saved”? Thanks. 😀

    Hi guys. Love your stuff. I am Reformed, came from similar Legalistic ,Baptist-only upbringing. So say Amen and Amen to all of it. Need a Quick clarification here. If the gospel says "done" and the law says "do", what category is the command to " repent and believe" fall into? Thanks

    • @THEOCAST
      @THEOCAST  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fruit of regeneration

    • @rodgerstwin2183
      @rodgerstwin2183 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. But the "fruit of regeneration" can only be displayed by the response to the command to "Repent and believe". The elect will repent and believe because faith has been gifted to them. Do you not preach "repent and believe"? I'm honestly asking.

    • @THEOCAST
      @THEOCAST  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Repentance is the fruit of faith. So yes. But if one does not repent it is the evident they have not faith. Dead people can’t repent. Eph 2 states He made us alive and caused us to walk in his way, that would be repentance.

    • @rodgerstwin2183
      @rodgerstwin2183 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agree to all of that. Let me rephrase my question because I think it confuses alot of non reformed believers. The law says "do" ,the gospel says "done". Which category then does the command to "repent and believe" fall? I believe this is the cry of the Shepherd to his sheep in John 10:27. The gospel itself does not save, its our response to the gospel that saves. Only those elect who are given faith, eyes opened, ears open, regenerated by spirit will "come", "eat", "believe" , be saved. So where would you say the command to believe the gospel fall?

    WHICHEVER GOSPEL THAT IS DISTINCT FROM THE LAW OF GOD YEHOVAH IS NOT OF GOD YEHOVAH THE LAWGIVER BUT OD SERPENT THE TEMPTER THE INVENTOR OF ANTILAW GOSPEL

    THE GOSPEL OF YEHOVAH THE TRUE GOD THE LAWGIVER IS A LAWFUL GOSPEL.
    ANY GOSPEL THAT IS BLASPHEMOUS, CONTRARY AND REBELLIOUS TO THE LAW OF GOD YEHOVAH IS NOT OF GOD YEHOVAH BUT A FALSE DECEPTIVE GOSPEL OS SERPENT THE TEMPTER
    Isaiah 33:22 ASV
    For Jehovah is our judge, Jehovah is our lawgiver, Jehovah is our king; he will save us.
    Isaiah 42:8,21 ASV
    I am Jehovah, that is my name; and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise unto graven images. [21] It pleased Jehovah, for his righteousness' sake, to magnify the law, and make it honorable.
    Isaiah 8:13,16,20 ASV
    Jehovah of hosts, him shall ye sanctify; and let him be your fear, and let him be your dread. [16] Bind thou up the testimony, seal the law among my disciples. [20] To the law and to the testimony! if they speak not according to this word, surely there is no morning for them.
    Deuteronomy 5:6,10,29 ASV
    I am Jehovah thy God, who brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. [10] and showing lovingkindness unto thousands of them that love me and keep my commandments. [29] Oh that there were such a heart in them, that they would fear me, and keep all my commandments always, that it might be well with them, and with their children for ever!
    Isaiah 40:8-10 ASV
    The grass withereth, the flower fadeth; but the word of our God shall stand forever. [9] O thou that tellest good tidings to Zion, get thee up on a high mountain; O thou that tellest good tidings to Jerusalem, lift up thy voice with strength; lift it up, be not afraid; say unto the cities of Judah, Behold, your God! [10] Behold, the Lord Jehovah will come as a mighty one, and his arm will rule for him: Behold, his reward is with him, and his recompense before him.
    Isaiah 52:7-12 ASV
    How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace, that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation, that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth! [8] The voice of thy watchmen! they lift up the voice, together do they sing; for they shall see eye to eye, when Jehovah returneth to Zion. [9] Break forth into joy, sing together, ye waste places of Jerusalem; for Jehovah hath comforted his people, he hath redeemed Jerusalem. [10] Jehovah hath made bare his holy arm in the eyes of all the nations; and all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. [11] Depart ye, depart ye, go ye out from thence, touch no unclean thing; go ye out of the midst of her; cleanse yourselves, ye that bear the vessels of Jehovah. [12] For ye shall not go out in haste, neither shall ye go by flight: for Jehovah will go before you; and the God of Israel will be your rearward.
    Isaiah 61:1-3,6 ASV
    The Spirit of the Lord Jehovah is upon me; because Jehovah hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the broken-hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; [2] to proclaim the year of Jehovah's favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn; [3] to appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them a garland for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they may be called trees of righteousness, the planting of Jehovah, that he may be glorified. [6] But ye shall be named the priests of Jehovah; men shall call you the ministers of our God: ye shall eat the wealth of the nations, and in their glory shall ye boast yourselves.
    Psalm 40:7-10 ASV
    Then said I, Lo, I am come; In the roll of the book it is written of me: [8] I delight to do thy will, O my God; Yea, thy law is within my heart. [9] I have proclaimed glad tidings of righteousness in the great assembly; Lo, I will not refrain my lips, O Jehovah, thou knowest. [10] I have not hid thy righteousness within my heart; I have declared thy faithfulness and thy salvation; I have not concealed thy lovingkindness and thy truth from the great assembly.
    Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 ASV
    This is the end of the matter; all hath been heard: Fear God, and keep his commandments; for this is the whole duty of man. [14] For God will bring every work into judgment, with every hidden thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.
