Salem alumi here...some general diesel/Def info...
Generally the more miles you drive the better it is to have a diesel engine, similarly the longer the trips, the better a diesel is...
A "PRE EMISSIONS" DIESEL avoids def...but since most of those are about 15 years old.... almost a non starter for most people looking for a vehicle.
Biggest thing is education....lack of knowledge cost ya $$ in having to go to the dealership to learn that your Def tank had frozen unfortunately....I drove a truck for a couple years, and today drive a "fixed" "diesel gate" VW...great car, especially since I got half my $$ back, and a 160k warranty for free!
But yes, def will freeze and during the winter having the light turn on will happen...
But a bit of a tip ..know your vehicle...newer ones use a heating pad on the bottom of the tank, older ones use a rod...if the tank is only half full, the heater element in the rod, overheats, fails and the Def will never melt. So keeping your tank mostly full is generally a better idea ...
    Keep up the good work!!

PS I park my diesel car in a semi heated garage so I haven't had issues, but have known people that have tossed a heater near the tank on occasion during super cold snaps....
Just like treating diesel fuel for the cold to prevent gelling, it's a different knowledge that's not as widespread.
Huge advantage is durability...it's not uncommon to have people on VW forums to say "I only have 500,000 miles...." As many get close to a million before they often give up due to the body or interior wear/rust.
Similarly HD commercial engines usually get a million miles or more before overhaul with a 500,000 "in frame" aka top end".
Gasoline engines...drop in an overhauled engine in every 300k

Good tip there - I’m kinda screwed because there no way I can plug in, but at least I’ll be forewarned!
