Every time I hear this song it brings tears to my eyes. My father would play this song on his harmonica every now and then when he was alive and I remember as a kid the tears in his eyes after he played it. My father served in the 24th Infantry Division during WW2 in New Guinea and told me one day that I would understand why he had those tears when he played that song. It was not until years later when I was doing my research paper on WW2 at the University of Hawaii that I came to understand the meaning of this song and the effect it had on the soldiers who fought on both side of the war. May they all rest in peace.
One day, when I was maybe 14 years old, I was sitting at my desk late one night with the radio on, when Daniel Kirstein told a wartime love story that is as old as war itself. It spoke of a young soldier who had to go away to war, and his sweetheart who longed for him eternally. Then he played a song which embodies World War II perhaps more than any other song. He explained that the German words were so much deeper than the English lyrics, and that is true. I recorded it immediately on tape. The song he played was this very same recording, sung by a woman who will remembered forever for her grace and style. I still remember that night and this song after all these years.
I'm still in love. Does this stir your German Heart Brother ? it should it stirs my British Heart. All warriors have the same longings, we all wish for peace a woman and a home, and when we have them we long for the days when all meant so much and it was a joy to be alive.
I have long searched for this german version ! superbe Marlene. I remember a late recording, where she introduces the song as follows "this is a song I used to sing during the war, for France, for Americans, for England, ... and for Germany". She is strong !
Lili Marleen was the song of both sides in North Afrika, The fighting was stopped for it. It's the most famous song of WW2. Both sides had several reunions together after the war and always started this with this song in German and English. There was respect and no hate ! The original and most famous version was sung by Lale Andersen.
No song has been listened to by more humans killed in war. My German grandmother cried when this song was played. The thought of our families listening to this song and then killing each other was to much for her.

Good wartime song and my late Dad told me it wa ssung by servicemen on both sides of the Western Front in Europe. Malene Dietrich-s voice is excellent making it a very good song to hear.
This song makes me think of my Uncle Bert, he was a POW of the Japanese in Malaysia, he would whistle this tune when working on hos allotment. A big, strong silent man, he never spoke about his time as a POW .
I am learning anew the infatuation and puppy love adoration aimed to one of the most beautiful women of all time.. The soft hauntingly beautiful song, a real piece of immortality, brought a lump to my throat.. as I remembered days gone by and nostalgia filled me to capacity and my love for Marlene Dietrich bloomed anew. So nice and rightly written!!

Beautiful description.

So glad I got to listen to Lili Marlene
This is the best version of all her this song! Also accompaniment!!! Lovely!!👍🏼💐💋

this always makes me cry
Right next to the barracks by the main gate
there stood a lantern and stands there up to date
We're going to meet there again
Next to the lantern we will remain
Like then, Lili Marlene
Like then, Lili Marlene
Our casted shadows appearing as one
and the love we had, clear to everyone
and to all people that was quite plain
when by the lantern we were stayin'
Like then, Lili Marlene
Like then, Lili Marlene
Already says the sentry, lights-out's being called
that can cost you three days, comrad let's not get stalled
We said goodnight right there and then
How I would love be with you again
With you, Lili Marlene
With you, Lili Marlene
It knows your nice walking, as you come along
every night it's burning, but it forgot me long
And if it comes and I'll be slain
Who by the lantern will be coming then
With you, Lili Marlene
With you, Lili Marlene
Off the lands of silence, off the earthly ground
in a dream it lifts me, your kiss leaves me astound
When the mist of night swirls into reign
There by the lantern I will be again
Like then, Lili Marlene
Like then, Lili Marlene
