I remember playing with my brother, having only Terra left with very little HP. We were sure we'd have to try this fight yet again. Terra did one of those "low HP" counter-attacks at it was the final blow :)

It's been a long time since I played it and I don't remember all this at the end. It was the PS1 version I played though, so maybe it wasn't included in that one? Anyway, seeing this is making me want to play it again now. Well, we're in a lockdown and I still have it so ... why not? Sounds like a great idea to me; I love retro gaming.

Cyan now rebuilds Doma Castle and now learns people self-defense
Setzer now thinking of his friend and training at the falcon
      Gogo? Well...he still watches space-time...

Honestly, a huge part of me wants that to have happened. However, there’s that symbolic part of me that says no.
Shadow... he never truly puts his past behind him. Cyan goes through the Dreamscape. Terra learns to love the children. Edgar frees his people, and Sabin reunites with Duncan. Celes’s suicide fails, and she remembers why she lives. Locke finally moves past Rachel.
Shadow doesn’t. He can still get nightmares. He still closes himself off. And at the end, that mask never comes off. Clyde died long ago, and as much as I would desperately want Relm and Shadow to reconnect... it doesn’t happen. Relm’s grown. Shadow can’t just say “hey I’m your dad everything’s fine now”. I think Shadow was scared of reconnecting with Relm. In the end, he dies alone, unwilling to open up again. He truly is the most tragic character in FFVI, and it’s filled to the BRIM with tragic characters.

They made a fantastic job with the music integration in this whole game. Terra's theme being the overworld theme and the intro one, Setzer's music being used as the airship music (obviously) and the fact that the entire 2nd part of the ending is just a variation on his theme makes so much sense.
As well, Locke's theme is the music used in all the multi-party battles in the game, since the first one in the Narshe caves is all about Locke and the Moogle protecting Terra. The Figaro's castle background music is Edgar and Sabin's theme. Locke's theme and Rachel's music are actually the same melody, but different takes. Celes takes here theme from the Aria at the opera. And the fact that Celes and Locke's themes orchestrate together at the end is genius indeed.

Never got to play it until I was an adult, despite me always wanting to. In my twenties I got the emulator, but life got in the way and I had to make a long pause from playing and never finished it. I tried again a few years later and something similar happened. Finally, I bought the pixel remaster from steam a month ago. I finally finished it at 42 years old, today. I love that the villain of this game is basically nihilism incarnate. The heroes are literally fighting for the proposition that life is worth living. I love how in the ending we see life-affirming visuals like Katryn giving birth, the once-barren wastelands giving rise once again to endless green, Sabin protecting his brother and Relm carrying her beloved Grandpa on her back. I absolutely love the moment when Terra lets her hair down. She's decided where she wants to be, and who she wants to be, and the rest of her life is hers to live, from that moment on.
Final Fantasy 6 is a masterpiece.

  • @DreamWolfHD

I finished Final Fantasy 6 a couple months ago for the first time going in completely blind, and every time I return to this cutscene I genuinely start crying. The characters in this game are so well developed that I genuinely feel the emotions in the scenes. The characters are all so unique but also flawed in their own ways. They're written so well they feel like real people, and the game's willingness to touch on dark topics helps add to that. You really feel like these characters have overcome a monumental force at the end. This cutscene is a culmination of this game's incredible storytelling, showing you how each character has grown.
The music is perfection here and adds so much to the scenes... The way Locke and Celes' leitmotif join together gives me chills... and the way the Relm's motif transitions into Shadow to hint at their connection. The way the track goes so quiet then let's out the melancholic melody before showing what Shadow does literally brings me to tears every time I see it. Watching him sit amongst the wreckage of the tower telling Interceptor to go while the music builds.
This is what truly incredible storytelling is like. The way this game continually builds these characters throughout the story and it all culminates here, showing how they're coping/feeling with all they've experienced. Some handle it all better than others, but at the end of the day that's what makes them so real. Not all of them are okay with what's happened to them. I think this ability to be grounded in reality and showing the grittiness of the real world is what sets FF6 apart as being one of, if not, the greatest RPG ever made.

True story....I imported this game from america through a game shop in the UK back in the 90s. I played it with a converter cartridge and loved it. When I got to the end credits, the screen went black with the music still playing. After putting so many hours into it...was gutted. Must have been some issue with the converter cart. I went back to the shop and the owner let me redo the end battle and watch it on her US import SNES. Took ages to watch it and she was getting impatient at the end...lol. superb game though. They dont make games like this anymore.

This feels good and “nostalgic” to watch again because you were a more creative, passionate human back when you first experienced this story. It’s characters , their struggles and relationships felt real because you cared more about what you could create and less about how to get by in a corporate capitalist drone world.

When i was young i never noticed all the hints the games drop that may be Relm's father (or at least related). From how Interceptor acts around her to same house in one of Shadows dreams. It was until recently that I realized that the character order in the credits is deliberate, and groups those with connects together. Edgar and Sabin, Locke and Celes, and Mog and Umoru. Then they dont but Relm and Strago back-to-back, but instead put Shadow in the middle giving a last piece of a puzzle to contemplate.
