Building a Cabin in the Woods Post and Beam Style
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 6 ก.พ. 2025
- We build our second cabin using a post and beam framing method for the first time. This shows the whole process start to finish to get the cabin sealed from the weather. We'll have a second video showing us building out the inside once we're finished.
What do you want to see more of in the next video?
While I do like watching a good build, I’m a girl, and don’t relate as much to that sort of thing. I would like to see the inside of the house, how are your heating it, cooking, food storage, etc. I have to say that you’re wife or girlfriend whoever she is, is drop dead gorgeous! I’m a new subscriber, and I don’t know your names. 😊
All these shows have a dog 🐕 running around, show us a good natured dog. Maybe show us how you deal with water, do you collect it or haul it in? I'm always curious about the cost. But maybe that's a personal question?
I agree with @witteney3334 Don't just show us what you build show us how you use it... Show us the life on the inside. Just standard day to day cabin life..
I'm curious about the heating, plumbing, and food prep area. I am also curious about the walls - were they insulated?
Any video of your stay in Alaska would be great.
This guy is a true craftsman, I am really impressed with his skill ! Aw to be young again.
It's all from my Lego's experience as a kid
@@2withnature You should have bought a book or two or even gone to the library because both of your builds are not good structurally. My pellet shed is better constructed and will carry more weight.
Part of the reason why we kept it small. If they're still standing in a year then they're probably good enough.
Got to be a professional tradesman ;)
@philipbrowne7620 nope but I had a short stint in construction when I was a kid
Ah, the smell of fresh lumber and new construction. Hard to beat isn't it? The second best thing to taking on projects like this, is being able to sit in a recliner and watching someone else do the work. It really makes me want to slap on my tool belt and help though. And I applaud your lack of brand loyalty. Yellow, green, orange, red, or blue, if it drills a hole and drives a screw, that's good enough. Keep up the good content.
Yup, not just the lumber but the woods with no cities nearby, it feels like medicine. And the green ones are more than capable for everything I need, I wish I went with them instead of the more expensive yellow ones. Thanks for watching Kyle, we have many more videos to come.
Nice. Next hopefully a outdoor screened and maybe even four season by adding removable insilated storm glass windows, a outdoor kitchen, with a wood heating and cooking stove, a grill, a sink, countertops, a long table for canning, and cleaning garden veggies and fruits, etc., plus a nice place to just hang out would be nice.
Well you basically spoiled everything for the next year or two! jk but yup pretty much.
As with the first cabin...excellent craftmanship. That building will last a long time
Thanks Chris!
I throughly enjoyed watching the construction of the cabin. It had me wanting to go out and build something with my own two hands too.👍🏿👍🏿🕊
That's what we're going for. Glad to hear it and thanks for watching!
You make it look easy.
🙏
Just found your channel and admire you and your wife's commitment to each other! Such love is nice to see. As an aside, I prefer the fact you dont talk much during the video. Sometimes youtubers talk too much as their ego takes over! Keep doing what you do, it is a pleasure to watch.
Glad you enjoyed it! We will have many more to come
I just came across your channel tonight and watched both of your cabin build videos, I'm looking forward to seeing you finish the insides of them. Your camera work/editing is great! keep up the good work, I would imagine your channel is going to really take off fast.
Thank you Dan! Ya we'll have those videos up as soon as we can. Thanks for watching!
Your video right before this one came up in my feed. Glad it did! New subscriber!
Happy it happened and welcome! More coming soon.
Idk about that man… lots of afterthoughts and it’s wayyyy overbuilt for lack of planning
Hi guys. I can't wait to see the finished product. I picture you guys sitting by a warm fire drinking a great cup of coffee. Stay warm. Many blessings.
Thanks Felicia! We will and many warm days and blessings to you too!
New Wyoming subscriber. You and your wife are the epitome of a TEAM. Your cabins are amazing. Small but will have all the comforts anyone could ask for!!
Thank you 🙏 It's super cozy, just what we were looking for. More to come!
A combination of skills going on here. First, framing and filming the shot, then building the dang thing like you planned. Artist at two techniques.
Don't forget the video edit!
@@2withnature Respect. I have a niece who had a travel channel and she said editing took up a huge amount of time. Of course, they were publishing every day, so that a whole new level.
Ya there's no way I could manage that. She could have a TH-cam channel all about how she edits with her being able to put out that much.
@@2withnature the edit probably took as long as the build
It wasn't too far off, but that's because this build went pretty fast and smooth
You must be a professional builder with all the tools and know-how. I'd be proud to live in a house built by you. The quality and workmanship in the cabin and the bathroom is amazing. You didn't cut any corners with the cost of all the materials you used to build both structures. (The term "built like a brick sh*thouse" has nothing on the bathroom you just built. 🙂)
Lol thank you. I worked in construction when I was in high school and college but it's been a long time since I stopped. I'm glad you enjoyed them and I hope you will when we post more in the future. Have a happy holiday!
@@2withnature You certainly didn't lose those construction skills. You do fantastic work.
🙏
Afternoon, have really enjoyed your videos, beautiful site, looking forward to your next! Take care
Glad to hear it! Working hard on the next one, but it's a lot of work. We'll have it up as soon as we can. Thanks for watching and take care!
Allways a pleasure to see a true craftsmen working one a project
Glad you enjoyed 🙂
I agree with other commenters about seeing each building's interior and how you'll use the space. I look forward to more videos in 2024. Happy New Year. Cass
Yup, we'll have the interior videos up as soon as we can. Thanks for always watching and Happy New Year!
WOW!....... that is really small. Great workmanship.
Thank you much! Just wanted all the necessities covered asap.
Hope we get to see the inside some day.
Yeah sorry stuff keeps coming up and getting in the way. We're going to do more work on in starting next week. It will be done sometime in December. Thanks for watching Gary!
Love to see what y’all do with the inside too! Nice work!
The inside of this one is still a work in progress but we'll have it done relatively soon. Thanks for watching!
I will never build a house but i so appreciate how you make it look very easy. Its just beautiful
Thank you 🙏 Many more projects to come
Excellent house the best of I’ve seen yet. Thank you for sharing this video with me.
Our pleasure! Thanks for watching 🙂
I love your projects and your techniques. Thanks for sharing. It would be great to see more of the measuring and cutting that you are doing before fitting the pieces together so neatly.
Thank you for the feedback. We'll try to add more variety in future videos. Thanks for watching Shane!
That looks awesome! Thank you for documenting your builds.
Thank you, it's our pleasure. Many more to come.
Subscribed...Digging the cabin build.
Awesome, thanks Tim! More to come.
Wow! This guy really knows what he’s doing that’s for sure. I will say I have a new respect for a Ryobi Drill.
Thanks. I was a little hesitant buying it at first. I've bought like 5 of their tools now and they're all beast and like 1/3 the price of the yellow tools.
Another truly wonderful build video…thoroughly enjoyed watching you create bit by bit…Brian (U.K.)
Thanks Brian!
You have great work habits - a real pleasure to watch a pro. I wish you two a blessed and happy life.
Thank you, you too!
Enjoyed your video. Looking forward to seeing more.
Thank you! We'll have one up as soon as we can, probably near the end of the month.
The process of building a small wooden cabin is beautiful, the design is perfect, beautiful and fully equipped
Thank you! We enjoy watching others build too and we're glad we decided to capture this.
Outstanding craftsmanship ! 💚
Thank you 🙏
I wish my husband had the skills and talent you have!
Beautiful cabin!

Thank you 🙏
Can’t wait to see the inside ❤
🙂 still working on it but we'll have it up as soon as we can. Thanks for watching!
I could see a strong foundation will last for ever with concrete polls , that is great way to build it , it is so nice to build your own place , I wish I got that tallent and skill from you , what you did impressed me ,
Thank you! It is very satisfying to build something for yourself, we had a lot of fun doing it
Enjoy the video very incredible. Learn a lot.👍NC
Thank you, glad you enjoyed!
So meticulous you are, mate! Well done.
Thank you! More to come soon.
I love this kind of stuff. It is so inspirational and continues to keep that fire and drive ignited to try it myself! I came across this channel from watching Bushradical and Girl in the Woods and I'm hooked! Keep it up and thank you!
Glad we can provide some inspiration, we're very glad we decided to do this, it has been so much fun an satisfying. We will have many more videos of these to come. Thanks for watching!
Liked your video. We are finishing a 10x12’ micro-cabin soon at 8600’ in S. Colorado. Also post and beam with 8” timbers. 2” styrofoam insulation. Interior work, cookstove, deck and outhouse next.
That's awesome! It will look really good too, I love the timber framed look. I hope it finishes well for you. We want to do a post and beam house soon, and maybe a timber framed house down the road. It's definitely the way to go.
just found you. Love your work. you are a True professional and build outstanding buildings Love how you dont miss a thing and build every thing right the first time. look forward to the future of your builds. Ps. cant believe you pulled that build off with a Ryobi drill. Lol
Lol don't hate on the green tools! It's my first time buying them and they've all worked great so far. Thanks for watching and we'll have many more to come!
New subscriber here, and I just have to say that these look great! It makes me wish I knew more about construction!
Glad to have you. Thank you 🙏
Súper, los felicito ahora quiero ver sus cabañas en el interior, sería genial no creen ?
Próximamente publicaremos un segundo video que nos mostrará construyendo el interior. ¡Gracias por mirar y espero que veas el segundo también!
So nice to see a bird (what do they call that bird there?) come for a visit. I'd like to see a red shiny bird feeder near or on your cabin to attract more birds to your beautiful cabin. Renee` from Virginia.
Yup, some of the birds will have back and forth conversations with me. That's something we might consider but there are a lot of squirrels and mice. Thanks for watching Renee
@@2withnature Oh Nooo...UGGH!...Squirrels...Mice..and Birds, not a good combination with Squirrels eating bird food and the mice looking for dinner from both the Squirrels and Birds..😂😂
Your land is magical
Thanks Paula! It feels more relaxing than home now
Comfort station looks great
Thanks Mike!
Very good construction skills
Thank you 🙏
SWEET.... HEAVY DUTY. I GOT ROBBED ON MY STRUCTURES IN 2021, LUMBER PRICES WERE REDICULOUS. NICE SEEING SOMEONE BEING ABLE TO PUT A NICE SOLID STRUCTURE TOGETHER WITH ALL THE LUMBER. R21 THOSE BUILDINGS AND YOU WILL BE SURPRISED HOW WELL THEY STAY COOL AND WARM IN WINTER. THEY ALLOW 10X20 HERE IN IDAHO AND WE GET MINUS TEMPS AT 4300 ELEVATION, AND IT TAKES MINIMAL TO HEAT IN WINTER. 👍👍🎄🎄❄❄
I would've built it out of straw if it was 2021. Ya I like this way of framing better than stick framing, it was my first time dabbling with it and it will insulate much better too. We'll do a full size cabin sometime in the future and we're going post and beam.
Usually out houses are ugly and bear. No appeal whatsoever. This one looks great.
Glad to hear it. This one is still a long way from being finished but it will be even better when it's done.
I can say that you definitely have more skills than me. You made it look easy and I know enough to know it wasn’t
Thank you sir. This one went surprisingly smooth.
I am very impressed by your knowledge and skill! After that lovely home you built, why build this cabin? Since you put a simple shed roof on it, it may not be warm for the winter.
Thank you! This one serves as our toilet room, shower room and storage room. We weren't too concerned with it being cold, we can put a heater in it. But what I didn't think about is the condensation that forms on the underside of the metal roof. It has served it's purpose well so far though, and we'll have a video of us finishing the inside once it's done 🙂
Z flashing between the horizontal sheets of T1-11..... Door backwards ? Treated post on the four corners . Nice over all build !
Thank you 🙏 Not going to sleep in here so not as concerned on perfect waterproofing, gonna put wood flashing on w/ caulking sealant, door works perfectly, as intended, the posts are on 1" spacers so don't need to be treated per code. Thanks for watching!
I did a similar thing but 4’x8’ and will have a chain fall to lift a 35 gallon solar tank up for a gravity feed shower. The shower bags are great but need refilling every day. Im currently in the process of figuring a way to mount the tank on a scaffold and lift the scaffold with the chain fall and secure it. Would be interested in exchanging Ideas. For a floor, I used Cedar 2”x6” x 8’ like a deck flooring, Of course with the sandy soil I didn’t need to worry about drainage.
If you don't want to use a winch I'd use a rope and set up a block and tackle, or use some type of jack. Or leave the tank on the ground and use a hand pump to pressurize it. I've seen videos of people make their own pressurized shower tanks with pvc pipe for their overloading rigs. Search that on TH-cam
Rumah kecil yg cantik dan indah ,,sehat semua pak 😁😁
Terima kasih, saya senang Anda menyukainya 🙏
Thanks for bringing us along. You must be in the high desert somewhere? I've been looking at land in Northern Minnesota. I just need to pull the trigger. I'd want to spend a month in the deep freeze, listen to wolves and go ice fishing. I'd look at the Northern Lights too, when applicable.
You are correct. That sounds like a good goal to have. If you have the means I doubt you'd regret it and certainly won't forget it.
⭐GREAT VIDEO⭐
thank you!
Just found ypu. Thanks for sharing.
Our pleasure! We'll be sharing many more soon
Would love to see the inside of your little cabin.
This one is still a work in progress but we'll have the inside done relatively soon and we'll do a better job showing it off when we do. Thanks for watching!
Great looking build you have going. Are you using a wood stove in the main cabin or a propane type heater?
Wood stove in the main. We're just about done building out the interior and we'll have the video of it soon. Thanks for watching Kevin!
Absolutely love your channel, you both are an inspiration!! Honest beginner Question: why is there no center concrete post? To support the 2x6s you put in the center? This method of building is so cool, you don’t see it on TH-cam cabin channels, seems like a neat shortcut of building vertically as opposed to the traditional horizontal approach. Cheers Aaron!
Well I'm not an engineer so don't take it to the bank, but I figured four points to take the load was enough. Each hole took about 3 hours on average to dig so I wasn't going to add any unnecessary concrete piers. It was my first time building anything this way and I really liked it, I'll do more like this in the future if it's not on a concrete slab. Thanks for watching, cheers!
Another excellent build here. This looks to be an 8'x8'? I have alot of tools and need something this size or a little bigger. Love how you build pretty much by yourself and litte to No talking.
Thanks Dave! Yup, 8x8 and I was relieved how fast and easy it went after the other one dragged out. Glad you enjoyed! More to come soon.
I like your channel. The building is great. Start filming some cooking with ingredients
Thank you! Will do
I'm curious as to why you didn't include vapor barrier under the roofing iron. Here in NZ it's something we would never consider not including, too much chance of getting condensation on the underside of the iron.
I didn't think about the condensation, I've seen other people do it without but now I realize they have a separate attic space with vapor barrier, insulation, etc. I'll wait and see how big of an issue it is and if so I'll probably remove it and put a barrier on. It would probably take me a day to do so.
Cheers M8. Goodluck with the ongoing project. Hopefully you dont get too snowed in and halt your progress.@@2withnature
Thank you 🙏 so far this winter that doesn't seem to be a problem, it's been record warm
It’s lovely, and you’re way braver than me…can’t say I’d want to traipse through snowy trees, in the dark, to go to the loo!
Is there a particular reason for it being separate and relatively far away from the main living space?
We aren't planning on installing plumbing at the moment so we didn't want it attached. And the distance felt nice to give it more of a secluded and quaint feel.
Suggestion: dress any infront of the front door Tree with Christmas lights (usb powered) with a battery bank. you can later use the warm color lights to make a path when goin to the LU or use it inside the storage/bathroom shed.
Lastly Add a Mesh screen door to the Bathroom side of the shed.. it will be good in summer.. less bugs.
Those are some good tips. I was thinking of doing a tree in front of the other cabin. The mesh door is a good idea too, I'm going to add a bunch of vents and windows to the structure but they're lower urgency. Thanks for watching!
Must be one strong man!
💪 the mountains make you strong
Very nice work. Northern Arizona?
Thank you! Nope, this is in Utah
nice little storage shed to keep hunting supplies

Nice but I can’t work in the cold.😂
It definitely takes some getting used too. But working in the heat is just as bad or worse.
Nice build. Word of caution, hinges on the outside of the doors just inviting someone to unscrew them and take the doors right off. Trust me, I know.
Ya I thought about how to deal with it in the past but ultimately if someone wants to break in and I'm not around there's not much I could do to stop it. I'm not gonna leave anything valuable here.
@@2withnature we ended up using one way screws
I might just set up some traps like in home alone
nice but we ladies like to see the inside of the nest lol uk granny
We'll have good shots of the inside on our next video. Promise!

Are there bears there? Will they get inside? I think it’s beautiful but I need plumbing. You could have a water tank, haul water up there. What about heat? Are you gonna have a wood stove in main cabin? You said propane heater for the bath house but when it’s cold it will take a bit to warm up. Guess you do your business fast and get back inside!😅 you forgot the crescent moon on your door!😂
Lol good one. There are black bears in the region but we've never seen one so we're not concerned about it. Our main reason for not doing plumbing is that the pipes will freeze. We want to be able to stop by for just a few days or up to a week at a time and we figured it would be more hassle than it's worth. Yes on the wood stove in the main cabin. We're gonna start with a propane heater in this one and if it's not sufficient then we can add a wood stove.
This is my dream to do this some day
It was a ton of fun. It's a good dream to have!
Wait a minute, didn't I just watch you guys build a tiny cabin?
Lol ya. We built two. We wanted the vibe of a few small structures spaced out in the woods and secluded. This one will be our storage, toilet, and shower rooms. Thanks for watching both!
😊 New subscriber
Thanks for subbing!
I'd like to see inside the cabins
Sorry we'll have videos up soon of us finishing the cabins on the inside. Thanks for watching!
If you had built your buildings the conventional way like most construction is performed say with 16” centres and 8” ceilings in a snow belt area then you could have put up a vapour barrier and insulated properly with fibreglass or roxul. The Tyvek and Tuck Tape is wasted the way you did it! Tyvek breathes but doesn’t allow water penetration. A vinyl exterior would waterproof the exterior whereas the panelling will absorb water if it is not painted! If you plan on heating either building then you can plan on having a condensation problem for sure. You might still try to insulate and vapour barrier anyway the way you built it but it will probably be much harder to do so. If you use these buildings for 3 seasons only then your probably good enough but still might get condensation from body heat under that steel roof!
Yeah you're right about that. We like the look of the natural wood color but we planned on painting it after a season or two. I wasn't sure how long the t1-11 would last but if it's only a few years I'd replace it with something more durable in the future. I did find this way of framing much faster though and want to learn more about it. And I didn't realize how much condensation this roof brings, it would need to have some kind of barrier or sub roof under it if we were sleeping in it but it will mostly just be a storage shed so I'm going to wait and see if it's good enough. Both were fun little learning experiments.
voce é incrível...
obrigado 🙏
Can we see the inside of this little house?
Yes, sorry we hadn't started on the inside by the end of the video. We're building out the inside right now and we'll have another video of it once we're finished. Thanks for watching Peggy!
why did you put locks on the door? I don't see the point as long as the hinge screws are still on the outside.
It's a lot easier to open an unlocked door than it is to deconstruct it
I wish I could build like that
It has been a lot of fun and very satisfying. I hope you get to sometime.
@@2withnature Hahah it would be something :) Keep up the grind I love your videos!
Thank you! We'll have many more to come
Did you throw some Z flashing between the lower and upper sheets of T1-11?
Not on this one. I'm going to cover it with wood trim and seal it with window caulking.
I'll have the outside finishes included in the next video of it when I finish building out the inside.
👍💯
🤘
What were the plans you used to build the two cabins since you did two different designs and how much did both cost?
Just a quick sketch for each so I'd know my heights and make sure the exterior surfaces all flushed out for siding. The first one was probably around $8k and the second about $3k. The door and windows added up to a lot and I also used a lot of metal strong ties in the first one and didn't realize until later how much they'd added up to.
Those brackets add up!
Seriously. I probably only used $200 worth in this second build and in the first it was probably like $1500 but I don't have any real idea.
Gonna be cold without a stove!
If you haven't make sure you check out our other cabin video. We're going to put a wood stove in that one
Why the reversed door look on the bath/storage building?
Idk, I just thought to myself how would I make a door quick and cheap and that's what I came up with
I think they mean cross bracing usually goes on inside. Weathers better that way. @2withnature
@savegraysoncats I see, well if it has to be replaced in the next few years I'll put it on the inside then. Thanks for the tip
Do you have electricity to the site?
We use lithium batteries and portable solar panels, we have one set from jackery and another from grecell. So we bring them with us and it powers everything we need which is camping style electronics and battery power tools.
Nice. So how do you heat the spaces? Especially curious about the bathroom to stop water freezing etc.
We put a wood stove in the cabin and a propane heater in the bathroom. We don't leave any water stored on site because of the freezing issue, we just bring it in with us each time we visit and we'll fill up a tank before using the shower. If we were living here we would do a more robust system but for short visits it didn't seem like it was worth the investment.
Inside videos of the cabins?
They will come. We are finishing the inside of the cabins right now. So we'll have videos of that up once we're finished.
I’m assuming you are a tradesmen?
No, I did some construction in high school and college though.
Do you ever show anything to completion?
If it was completed I would. Still a work in progress, thanks for watching!
What if you have to take a dump and it’s a blizzard
What state are you in?
This is in Utah
Can you show interior. Didn’t see last one either.
Sad.
Yes we'll have a video showing it a lot as we build out the inside. Sorry I should've gotten more shots of it for this video.
Why didn't you want to have an attached bathroom?
We're going to have a composting toilet for now, we aren't staying here full time and didn't want to worry about plumbing freezing. That's the main reason.
Interior build please!
Yup, we will have the interior finish up as soon as we can! Thanks for watching 🙂

where is the T-11 Z flashing ???
I don't think it's necessary. We'll have another video once the inside is all finished but I did wood flashing w/ caulk sealant. No water has gotten in.
Too small, this is America!!!

Lol idk what I was thinking
Tour??
We're building out the inside right now and we'll have another video showing that and doing tours throughout the process. Thanks for watching!
