Nope, the reason why other stores (besides Trader Joe's) wouldn't follow Aldi in this policy is that most (70-80%) of what they sell is PRIVATE BRAND MERCHANDISE, IOW, their own brand (as good quality as it is). Usually the gas (besides protecting the fragile stuff) is there for making the packaging bigger ON PURPOSE, so they can cram more copy / illustrations on each package. That's made in an environment when a store usually has 3-6 brands of each article. Aldi / Trader Joe's usually carry only 2: their own and a single national brand. The only places that follow a lesser selection policy are the MEMBERSHIP CLUBS, particularly Sam's Club and Costco w/2-3 brands of each item, and therefore could be the only places that would follow such a policy if they want to. In the manufacturer's side there's no good marketing reason for making smaller packages if they want to stand vs. other brands (also in US there's mostly no space issue, since stores are larger and can dedicate as much space as desirable for any product). You keep forgetting the publishers of "Mashed" tend to be MORE SUPERFICIAL in their 'research" than other YT accounts, as proven by their other accounts, like Nicki Swift (gossip) and The List (Top 10's)...
In the UK Aldi and Lidl both pay more to shop floor staff than the big names pay supervisors. Cheaper prices and better paid staff. They have to be doing something right.
But you've also got to scan a customer's 275 products in the space of time they are given to say " fine thank you" after asking them how their day is going. In the UK at least. The few times i shopped in Aldi, I blink and my products are at the end of the till and the cashier is getting ready to scan the next customer, I hear they are targeted on how many they do in a certain time?

You’re right. It is the same in Germany. We buy the most of our weekly stuff at Aldi. But we have more Discounter like Aldi in Germany. Food is really cheap on this way to buy at the discounter in Germany. There is a price fight betwen the discounter. The winner is the consumer.
I love how fast the cashier works. When i first went there and the cashier went through it so fast i was like holy shit. What just happen! How! A-are you mvp of the month? The cashier responds "im actually pretty slow at this" i respond theres a level beyond that?! Wooooah.
Believe it or not but for a long, long time Aldi would not open a second checkout for anything. I never went there for that reason and a perception of inferior products. But in recent years my opinion has changed in large part, although I am still very selective and do not stockpile.
Helps that there are a lot of barcodes on the boxes, too. Most big brands only have one barcode on their packages, but Aldi brands have one on multiple sides.

Switched from Kroger to Aldi: Went from $370/ month to $200/ month. I still swing by Kroger once every other month to pick up a few specialty items i cant find at Aldi, but am overall impressed by Aldi's growing selection while maintaining low prices
I work at Aldi and have been for 2 years. I’m glad working for this store and you really work hard and take initiative all the time. It’s a great feeling. I’ve worked in Publix for 5 years previously as a cashier and grocery clerk, and at ALDI you do it all. You feel like a Really important part of the store. It’s no easy job but you feel accomplished after every day 👍🏼

So, for example, they cannot plant GMO seeds or include GMOs in mixed products without disclosing this, however, if GMOs end up in the product this is acceptable and does not impact the certification if the process was followed. My non-expert opinion after looking at the process is that it probably is fine for produce but anything processed will have GMOs in them. To be clear, there is *NO EVIDENCE* that *GMOs of ANY KIND* have *ANY NEGATIVE CONSEQUENCES.* That said you're welcome to shop based on whatever non-science ir religious motives you value. Also, they do not have anything to say on foriegn bodies. They may be reduced by the processes used but the normal amount of jnsect parts, foriegn bodies, and other bits and pieces are still allowed as per normal law.

I keep a quarter in my car. I call it my Aldi quarter. I like the fact that they have seating for their cashiers. It shows that they care about their employees. A companies biggest investment is in their staff and the healthier the staff the better work force you have.
Another way they save costs is at checkout - they scan the items super fast and expect you to bag your own groceries. It's odd at first but soon becomes second nature and you realise how efficient it is; the queues move super quickly
That's basically how every grocery store works in Germany. The market here is *insanely* competitive and demands companies spend all this effort on driving up efficiency and saving money. Like, this is the market *Walmart* walked into, lost a billion dollars and gave up on because they couldn't keep up with the competition.

Our parking lots are pretty big ig, but tbh its pretty good because a fair amount of young people get a decent job just pushing carts inside. Would I take mine back to the store? Sure but most the time its they want you to out them in the lots
Don't be ridiculous. The shopping carts in Florida cost upwards of $100. The groceries are very conscientious about retrieving them. The parking lots are huge, and not all customers are able to return the carts. At Publix, the bagger will always offer to help you to your vehicle. Two reasons: good customer service, and to retrieve the cart. So yeah, in a place primarily occupied by semi-able seniors, of course the staff wants to bring in the carts ASAP. Each one is worth more than they earn in a day!:)

Missed one of Aldi’s biggest cost saving measures - speed at the tills. Employees are set targets on how many goods they must scan per hour. Barcodes are really big on Aldi products so that they can be scanned really quickly. Aldi staff don’t make conversation with you, they scan your items, take payment, then move on to the next customer straight away.
You missed how their product barcodes are printed on literally every side of their packaging. This means cashiers never have to spend time looking for a barcode and can pretty much just push every item over the scanner en masse, requiring less checkout lanes to be open, which means lower labor costs, shorter wait times for customers, and smaller store footprints. Not as big of a cost savings as their 90% generic brand model, but every bit counts!
I'm in Kansas US & have two amazing Aldi stores that are within just a few miles from my house and I'm going to list the things that my friends, family and I have found to be better tasting or just as good then your average Kroger or equivalent expensive grocery store at anywhere from 40 to 50% off the cost... * caramel syrup (tastes just like the Brach's caramels but in syrup form) * chocolate bars ( they are made with fine chocolate from Belgium or Germany and The Taste is amazing ... my favorite is the chocolate with toffee bits but there are loads of choices) * ketchup *peanut butter ( I have a couple dogs that I would rather give them their pills on peanut butter then to shut my finger down their throat and we love using peanut butter in our household and the price is so much cheaper) * produce (soo much cheaper & quality is great) $1 for 2# of carrots is half the price of Kroger) * canned tuna & salmon & sardines * butter * boxed brownies 85 cents & they are delightfully delicious * baking supplies like flour sugar baking soda baking powder vanilla extract and now they're also offering coconut oil flax seeds chia seeds and all kinds of great things to bake with
I just grab a couple of the empty cardboard boxes from the shelves and use them in place of buying bags. The staff is fine with that. Saves them from collecting and compacting them. I recycle them when I'm done.
Me too, and I much prefer carrying a box of stuff into the house as opposed to picking up veggies or cans that are rolling all over the car floor and under the seats. Those plastic bags may work ok to carry a few items but set it down in the car and things tend to scatter.
I invested in a handful of nice canvas shopping bags :). I can use them for other shopping or needs plus I can wash them if they get dirty and throw them back into my car.
I went shopping at Aldi for the first time yesterday afternoon and couldn’t believe how cheap it was. I spent $59.53 and my cart was full, I had a good 30+ items in my cart. Anywhere else, it would have been $90-$100. I saved about $40 and that, in the long run, is good for my wallet.
Deb I live in Germany at the moment and admire Aldi for their efforts. Still, I wish Aldi was a novelty here and not the benchmark for cheapskate snobbery
Same here in the UK saved so much money shopping in aldi . Aldi chicken and pork is great Much better than asda/walmart chicken and pork.The mamia nappies/ diapers are better than huggies or pampers and so cheap.
Aldi's is my primary store. I can't recall ever being unhappy with any products purchased there. The lines at checkout are seldom long, move fast and make cashiers in other stores appear to move unenthustically in slo-mo.
In every Lidl/aldi store you'll see ads for shop managers.The wages look very tempting but it's fools gold as all managers are expected to hit all targets and do loads of unpaid overtime. In the aldi/Lidl shops & warehouses all overtime is paid flat rate for the blue collar workers.
Honestly, my Aldi's sucks lol. The employees always act like they're annoyed that you're shopping there, their produce is never fresh and their meats are cheap. Now Lidl, in my area, is another story. Their employees are always really nice and helpful, their produce (though not the best) isn't half bad and their meats are good. But I'm a "food snob" as my bf's mom likes to say lol and I prefer to get my produce from the local farmers market. And there a small little shop on main street that I like to get most of my baking supplies from and the local deli is where I get a lot of meats and seafood.
bonydox9 German aldi store manager here. I get over 64k a year but basically have no life cause i cant spend the money im earning. Working 60h week and doing 3 workers jobs and sometimes im just alone there in the morning doing everything till my staff comes. We look annoyed because we "have" to look annoyed. We dont want customers starting conversations with us (like other supermarkets) because there is simply no time for anything. Regarding overtime: I get every hour paid but sometimes im loggin myself "off" and keep work so my store kpi's numbers doesnt get too bad. But thats just once or twice a year
I grew up with Aldi groceries and I have to say, they've really improved over the years. Their food selections, the quality of the food, the brand name products they carry are for cheap and the stores are typically clean. Also, their organic foods have gotten soooo much better.
Same here, I've noticed that too. I guess it could have something to do with the fact that Lidl started poaching a lot of their customers, Aldi finally took that as a sign to step up their game. Seems like they're still pretty under-staffed most of the time over here though, and the overall service is nothing to write home about either (no smiles...), but it's possible that could just be a local thing. Love their products though.
Couldn't live without aldi they are the best efficient happy helpful staff clean store and the prices suit my pocket all the best to aldi and the more shops we see the better
I find the staff at many Aldi's stores I've attended, to be very kind, courteous and conscientious. They are always pleasant and friendly. Great at helping me find a particular product in the store. And when they're on the register, they kindly wait patiently for you to get your goods back in the trolley. No matter how slow you may be. Sorry to hear that you don't have the same pleasant experience at your local Aldi, Runi.
Ozlass 777 Well, I'm glad to hear you are so happy with it. I guess the Aldi in my town just never really caught on, frankly. It's a pretty big one, but I never see more than 5-10 people inside, regardless the time of the day. My girlfriend jokingly calls it the "penal colony" sometimes, she thinks it's the end of the line for older, or disgruntled Aldi employees or something 😄 But I'm not one to complain really, I actually like shopping there. It has it's own charm, in an odd way.
Runi Anything to save a dollar, I'm on it. That's why I love Aldi where I'm from in Australia. Not that I'm stingy or anything. But when you're on a fixed income as a carer, every penny counts. When you have 2 major supermarket chains that have monopolised the market for decades. It's great to finally have a cheaper alternative. I could easily spend $200 or more on half a trolley load at one of the 2 major supermarkets. But then I go to Aldi. And get a packed full trolley for around $120-$150.. I love it! 😁
They are 16 and 3, I feed them a lot of different foods usually cereal for breakfast maybe lunch meat or hotdogs or something like that for lunch and meat potatoes and a veg for dinner
When I lived in the US for an extended period of time, I was very thrilled to see ALDI around. They even have some of the "brands" I know from Germany. It wasn't quite the same experience but somewhat similar. I mean, in comparison to what was my favorite place to go shopping while in the US: Wegmans. When WALMART tried to open stores in Germany, it didn't last very long. The essence of what made WALMART popular in the US was missing here: it wasn't cheap. It was only selling the same products as any other store to similar prices plus a few imported goods from the US for a lot of money.
Aldi essentially employs German techniques in the US. All of this is normal for every store in Germany. That goes for the carts (which was a major source of annoyance when it was originally implemented for all grocery stores in Germany) as well as their limited stock. They also have a lot of store brands. Aldi started that when I was a child. They stopped selling anything that was not store labelled. It’s still brand name stuff, but Aldi only sells it under a different label. The brands give them lower cost items to sell to sell to Aldi at all. Therefore they also do the special boxes for Aldi. That cash register that you saw in the movie wasn’t an Aldi register. German cashiers sit at the register and don’t stand. That goes for Aldi stores as well.
And, in the UK, too! We rarely use anything but, either Aldi's or My Lidle Pony, for shopping! IF we do, we ONLY buy the reduced stuff in the other supermarkets, the oddsies, as my mother would say.

This is pretty much the Warehouse Clubs (Sam's Club / Costco / BJ's) style if you haven't been to one (I've been inside all 3 chains stores in one moment or the other).
I buy 95% of my groceries from Aldi and have done for about 4 years. I'm in Australia. I agree with everything in the video, they stock what sells quickly and leave slow movers for other shops. It is a very efficient set up, I like that. I have bought TV's, washing machines, ovens, driers and lots of tools there, most products are very well priced and reliable.
Bob Jackson: Correct, I have bought tools (mainly electrical types ) and they have all been heavily used over the past ten or so years, great value for money too.Much hardware e.g Bathroom Fittings, Taps, Locks etc are excellent products and beat Bunnings rip off prices by miles. e.g. Digital locks, $59.00 against Bunnings similar type at $189/99 etc., also metal fittings, and similar hardware a quarter and less of the price for the Chinese made items as sold by Bunnings. Problem is, they do not hold hardware items for more than a week at most and nothing is worse than seeing a box of Screws for example at $4.50a Kilo Box whilst Bunnings are selling similar screws in silly little packets of ZENITH Brandwith perhaps 5 or 10 screws for around $4.99 a pack.The same goes for nails and similar fixings.Terry Offord
Aldi in Australia sells house appliances? All the Aldi's I've been here in the US are generally smaller than a regular supermarket and not much bigger than a drug store.
I started going to Aldi about a month ago. And so far we save on average $400 a month. We used to shop at Wegmans or other stores. We don't spend more than $100 a week, unless we get extra items from the special buys or stocked up meats. It's honestly my favorite store!
This may be a local problem. Aldis in Arizona may have different suppliers than those in New Jersey, and since this is commented by an international audience different counties have different standards. Allso chicken quality may be different from beef quality.
I can't believe you didn't mention how not providing bags encourages the customers (like myself) take their display boxes, cutting down both on waste for the store and time paying someone to re-stock, or the fact that making you put a quarter deposit for the cart essentially turns the customers into cart pushers, and encourages someone to grab a loose cart they see (because, hey! Free quarter!)
Yeah but unfortunately it also encourages a lot of people (since it is shocking how many human beings are disgusting slobs in reality) to leave those boxes around the parking lot or front entrance of the Aldi. The Aldi in my town looks like a tornado came through there within a few hours of opening and the employees inside never clean it up. The shopping center has to hire a person to exclusively clean up after Aldi. It's insane and they've been talking about getting the health department on them about it for months.
Their cart policy, along with the no shopping bag policy is simply a way to externalize costs; making the customer pay for something they're too cheap to provide.

I work at Aldi. It’s an amazing company! It is a lot of hard work but it’s predictable which I like and it keeps you in shape. I do zero cardio at the gym. Win!! I came from working at Chickfila so it was an easy transition. It’s funny to me when people come in and say “are you hiring? I like the fact that you get to sit down at the register all day.” Ummmm false. Lol. I’m an Aldi fan for life. There’s nothing like it. Except the fact that our weekly special buys can take a majority of my check. There’s always something new and amazing!! I’m getting help. (I’m not really) lol.

Been an avid Aldi shopper in the US since 2005-06. I must have lived in at least 6 states (NY, PA, NC, FL, VA, MD) since then and luckily each had an Aldi or two within a driving range from my home. I may have saved thousands of dollars so far in groceries so far without compromising on the quality. And yes, they do pay their employees well which shows in the fabulous customer care they exhibit in the stores. I can vouch that 100% of everything stated about Aldi here is absolutely true. Lastly, I am proud that I should have added at least 40-50 new customers for Aldi sheerly by my recommendation. :-)
I've converted thousands at this point. Every one i know now shops at aldis. I am their unofficial advertisement department. I also tell my friends to advertise too. I told them this recently and today the manager saw me and opened up a lane just to check me out. They really are an amazing store. #aldisoverwalmart
The Uk are still very behind of the times tho. We went on many holidays to France they only sell re-usable bags. If you don't take a bag or buy one the os no other option. no boxes like Aldi ect.
Walmart doesn't want to do this because it might discourage shoppers from taking one of their shopping carts that are way too oversized to fit down the aisles, and filling it to the top with stuff we don't need.
I started shopping at ALDI in Scotland over 20 years ago, when I moved to the Highlands my closest ALDI store was 120 miles away. They opened a new ALDI in Inverness 8 years ago, since then, my life has been complete :)) Love ALDI, low prices, excellent quality and much better than ASDA (Walmart)
David Davidsoni like aldis but, very true!! i do fault them huge here. they never have more than one cashier humping with an emergency out stocking shelves. The cashiers are usually very good but aldis suck there employees dry.
David Davidson - same as Lidl - very few staff, infact bare minimum, you pay in other ways though with long queues, Lidl i use even on a weekend, at times only one till on.

FYI, a correction for this video at 0:55 time stamp: snack bags (pretzels, chips, popcorn, etc) don't contain oxygen. They're filled with nitrogen. Oxygen would quickly turn the chips stale. The nitrogen preserves the freshness of the chips, prevents combustion, and creates sufficient cushioning during shipping so the chips don't get crushed

That’s true - my favourite is the whole almond milk chocolate tablets Aldi UK sells. Something you’ll find easily in Europe but not otherwise in the UK.
Train Magic Yes, however the quality of actual chocolate produced here in the U.S. (Hershey's for example) is severely lacking compared to chocolate from European countries, which is what he was referring to.
European chocolate is better than American. It just is. I say that as an American. Swiss, German and Belgian chocolate in particular. Thus . . . "European quality."
You also missed one other thing I've noticed them doing... The queues in Aldi are exceptionally long for any store. They prefer to have as few people on the tills at any one time. This means they can get away with having less staff, and staff aren't constantly rotating between jobs. Instead by waiting for an extra 3-5 minutes, we are essentially paying for the reduction in prices, with our own time.
Even the few times I've seen "long" lines, they still move very fast. I can't say that about any other grocery store. I've been shopping at Aldi for over 15 years.
I worked for a cereal company that made a lot of cereal for Aldi. They were a good company to do business with, unlike Walmart. They may not warehouse much, but the manufactures do. We had a huge section with just their product.
I love the algorithms of TH-cam. Just the other day I was bragging about this store in another post regarding celiac disease. They have a great selection of gluten free food and I was telling the other celiac patients about it. I love Aldi. The one near me keeps better produce than any store around. I usually forget my bags and have bought a few. But, I'd rather shop here than anyplace else!!

There's an Aldi a few blocks from my house. I tried it a couple of times and was put off by some of the oddities of the experience...and, to be frank, they don't carry any beer i drink. BUT...after watching this video i now think I've wrapped my mind around the concept. Excellent presentation!! I love efficiency and I'm going to make an effort to start shopping there regularly.
I just hope they never stop selling the jumbo raw shrimp from seaqueen! You won’t ever find a better deal in such an incredible high quality! It’s unbelievable!
We now have 3 Aldi locations nearby & tons of other grocery store chains, Aldi is very convenient for consistently finding Gluten Free items at great prices, they carry a wide selection of cheeses and frozen items and meats and seafood, Aldi is the only store I have been able to buy frozen asparagus and frozen brussel sprouts in steamer bags
In Australia,I find that often, ALDI 'runs' out of certain products, My experience has been, NO Lemon Juice (Bottle type) for almost three months, A Favorite Soup powder Asian Laksa, Best on the market, Stopped stocking it for past 6 months, Tins of Tuna, 20% Water (enables it to be sold cheaper than Rivals), Black Pepper Beef Soup (canned,) all of a sudden, no longer available but a sort of replacement now on shelf with a mere third of the Beef in it than the previous Black Pepper Beef soup had. Aldi are Squeezing the manufacturers pricewise and if Aldi don't get the target price they insist on, the product goes off the shelf (That is my opinion)Fresh fruit etc., some is like the local fruiterer, OK for the price, other times, certain fruit, i.e. Bananas are $2.00 or more per Kilo ($3.99) at Coles by the way, but seldom do ALDI price their bananas at lower than $2.00. Much a case of Shop Around, buy at the best price but I have noted that in Australia many women are lazy shoppers, that is, they do NOT shop around and tend to throw mega bucks away at COLES, WOOLIES and IGA where they would be saving good dollars by buying at ALDI. I often see Pension age women BUYING Bottled water in Coles at many dollars a slab,in Melbourne, where the tap water is supurb. I love Aldi's, their fast checkout, their cart pickup/return proceedures, their product selection, etc. Off hand, I can't remember ever disliking any product.
I wrote a report in 2007 about an oncoming recession and aldis ability to dominate the market in future. it actually happened. I won't have been the first person to know but in early 2000s businesses were living in a bubble of debt while aldi were doing things with German efficiency. (old Germans didn't trust loans/credit)
Easily my favorite grocery store. Great story! Brilliant management that disrupts the industry, no different then Tesla. Their Signature Brand is very reliable. Also, love the Aldi Finds section each Wed!
Its just the German model. Thats how they keep costs down for consumers with the 19 percent sales tax and all of the rest of the high tax rates over there. In many cases in Germany, food is cheaper over there than in the US although electronics and gas are outrageous.
Well, essential food is 7 percent tax...processed food has 19 percent. Meaning Milk has 7 percent, the ready-made yogurt with fruits 19 percent. If you buy eggs they are 7 percent, but there is a special provision in the law that eggs without shells are 19 percent.

TexasDog3 You are exactly right. I worked in management for whole foods, sprouts farmers market, other natural food groceries and did costco (non mamagement) Aldis i would never work for. I rather get paid 11$ as a clerk in whole foods are costco than 13 at aldis. They offer 19 an hour for assistant manager at aldis n every 6-12 months they re post the position like clock work. If you have that construction worker mentality where u can work hard and fast everytime u punch in than its cool but most human beings get burnt the fuck out. Being treated like robots instead of human beings isnt my agenda
I think the differnce in taste may be all in the customers mind due to their bias. It would be interesting to see some blind tests being done between brands to see.
Aldi's has a freshness problem with fruits and vegetables. Many Items delivered to stores are already in the process of spoiling; meaning the food has been sitting around to long or has taken too long to deliver. I often suspect that in order for Aldi's to provide lower prices they buy food at the wholesaler for a discount that other stores have looked over. When Cauliflower has brown spots this means it is old and needs to be discarded, when Blueberries are moldy this means the berries are old and needs to be thrown away, when Broccoli stalks are like rubber it means the broccoli is old and needs to be thrown away, but that is what Aldi's is selling in their stores and the prices are now higher then Walmart for many items.
While the video is informative and mostly correct; your visuals are a little confusing. You continually switched between Aldi Sud (Aldi South) and Aldi Nord (Aldi North) logos. The original parent company in Germany split several years ago. The company known as Aldi in the US and Canada is a division of Aldi Sud - Aldi Nord in North America is known as "Trader Joe's" - and now you know.

To different companies with very similar values about quality, pricing and how to treat people. Trader Joe's was around for ages in California before going national. They still are mainly in major Metropolitan area. Aldi came from the East coast and still isn't everywhere which may be why some are saying it isn't in America. Aldi's parent company acquired Trader Joe's in the early aughts.
Waaait, they have Aldi in the US? Never thought a German grocery store would make it over there. Must be weird for Americans having to chain up your shopping cart to get your quarter back. xD My stepfather is from Florida and before he came here to Germany he never saw something like our German grocery stores.
And the 'bring your own bag' thing. Last time I was in the US I was shocked at the amount of plastic bags grocery stores gave out for people's shopping. What a massive waste. Maybe they've updated that by now though.
I pass one of these stores often, but I've NEVER stopped and gone in. I'm always saying that I want to go and see what it's about. I think I will make a stronger effort after watching this video.

I've worked for Aldi for 17yrs now..I like how the company helps me to always strive to be and do my best and walk away at the end of my shift feeling a sense of accomplishment and a job well done! :)
And look at how they respect you by constantly adding an s or 's to the name. It's funny, it's sad, it makes no sense. Hopefully you politely correct them when they do it in person. I think highly of the people I've met at Aldi in five different countries.
I pretty much exclusively shop for food at Aldi's. I am very sensitive to artificial food colors in particular and since most Aldi's brand food uses natural coloring (usualy fruit and vegetable juices) it doesn't give me headaches. Their produce is usually very good though during the winter it is somewhat limited because they usually try to carry mostly seasonal fruits but it is still good. Also, their rotational approach to food specials helps keep me from getting stuck in a rut and adds variety to my diet. Last of all, their food is just so much better both in cost and quality, I love both their chocolate and their icecream better than almost anywhere else. The only other places that have icecream flavors I particularly like are Braums (their white chocolate raspberry cheesecake and cappuccino chunky chocolate are really good and I haven't found those specific flavors anywhere else) and the Ben and Jerry's Toast the Roast. Other than one or two other very specific food items that I have only found at Walmart I rarely go anywhere besides Aldi's, I even get clothing and home items from there when they occasionally carry them, I really like their socks. 😁

And the last time I was at an Aldi's.....I was returning my cart when I saw a lady putting her child in the child seat but I noticed the cart she used beside her car. I asked her if she'd like me to return the cart so she didn't have to undo the child and take the cart back. She said, "oh thank you. I figured I'd have to take my child out and take the cart back....Thank you so much." I even gave her the quarter to take her cart back. After I had loaded up my truck and went around the truck to the driver side, I heard a lady yell out of her window, " I wanted to thank you again.....Thank you so much." Remember, people can do good things to help people in a parking lot.
This is a constant thing at Aldi. Sometimes people don't have ask for their quarter back, they just hand you the cart. Then pass it on to the next person on your way out of the store.

The grocery market is extremely competitive in Germany. There are several mayor chains wich more or less directly compete with each other, often you will find the stores only a few meters apart from each other. There are „Lebensmitteldiscounter“ like Aldi, Lidl, Penny, Plus, Netto, Kaufland and so on and „Supermärkte“ like Edeka, Rewe and some smaller ones. These and several other chains belong to only four mayor corporations. So it‘s either be efficient or die.
we have grocery stores right next to each other in the US, too, and often several different companies within short driving distance of each other, but they don't have to be minimalist fanatics to stay in business
I like their random tools and hardware stuff that pop up throughout the year - some of them are actually very good quality. Paul Sellers - very well known woodworker in England swears by their chisels and buys them for his school for students to use. In the US they were $6 - great deal!
Aldi moved in across from a Walmart. Milk at W.M. is $0.69 gallon, dozen eggs $0.45 now. 18 oz box of Rice Crispies is $0.75, 24 oz box of Corn Flakes are $1, Bananas are routinely $0.36 a pound and the list goes on...

They always have nice produce, even if the selection may not be huge. As a chef I LOVE all the cost saving measures they take as a company. It passes the savings along to the consumer and allows them to have good quality products for a lower price. Gotta love ALDI.

Nope, the reason why other stores (besides Trader Joe's) wouldn't follow Aldi in this policy is that most (70-80%) of what they sell is PRIVATE BRAND MERCHANDISE, IOW, their own brand (as good quality as it is).
Usually the gas (besides protecting the fragile stuff) is there for making the packaging bigger ON PURPOSE, so they can cram more copy / illustrations on each package. That's made in an environment when a store usually has 3-6 brands of each article. Aldi / Trader Joe's usually carry only 2: their own and a single national brand.
The only places that follow a lesser selection policy are the MEMBERSHIP CLUBS, particularly Sam's Club and Costco w/2-3 brands of each item, and therefore could be the only places that would follow such a policy if they want to.
In the manufacturer's side there's no good marketing reason for making smaller packages if they want to stand vs. other brands (also in US there's mostly no space issue, since stores are larger and can dedicate as much space as desirable for any product).
You keep forgetting the publishers of "Mashed" tend to be MORE SUPERFICIAL in their 'research" than other YT accounts, as proven by their other accounts, like Nicki Swift (gossip) and The List (Top 10's)...
I actually prefer the taste of Aldi chips over lays though the chip shape of lays are better.

In the UK Aldi and Lidl both pay more to shop floor staff than the big names pay supervisors. Cheaper prices and better paid staff. They have to be doing something right.

I love how fast the cashier works. When i first went there and the cashier went through it so fast i was like holy shit. What just happen! How! A-are you mvp of the month? The cashier responds "im actually pretty slow at this" i respond theres a level beyond that?! Wooooah.
Believe it or not but for a long, long time Aldi would not open a second checkout for anything. I never went there for that reason and a perception of inferior products. But in recent years my opinion has changed in large part, although I am still very selective and do not stockpile.
The checkout staff are obliged to pass at least 1150 (in my day) items through the barcoder. They are penalised if they consistently fail
Helps that there are a lot of barcodes on the boxes, too. Most big brands only have one barcode on their packages, but Aldi brands have one on multiple sides.

Switched from Kroger to Aldi: Went from $370/ month to $200/ month. I still swing by Kroger once every other month to pick up a few specialty items i cant find at Aldi, but am overall impressed by Aldi's growing selection while maintaining low prices

I work at Aldi and have been for 2 years. I’m glad working for this store and you really work hard and take initiative all the time. It’s a great feeling. I’ve worked in Publix for 5 years previously as a cashier and grocery clerk, and at ALDI you do it all. You feel like a Really important part of the store. It’s no easy job but you feel accomplished after every day 👍🏼

My non-expert opinion after looking at the process is that it probably is fine for produce but anything processed will have GMOs in them. I keep a quarter in my car. I call it my Aldi quarter. I like the fact that they have seating for their cashiers. It shows that they care about their employees. A companies biggest investment is in their staff and the healthier the staff the better work force you have.
Have several friends who have worked there. Aldi's doesn't care, at least in the US. The work is brutal and the stores are purposefully understaffed.

Another way they save costs is at checkout - they scan the items super fast and expect you to bag your own groceries. It's odd at first but soon becomes second nature and you realise how efficient it is; the queues move super quickly
That's basically how every grocery store works in Germany. The market here is *insanely* competitive and demands companies spend all this effort on driving up efficiency and saving money. Like, this is the market *Walmart* walked into, lost a billion dollars and gave up on because they couldn't keep up with the competition.

Our parking lots are pretty big ig, but tbh its pretty good because a fair amount of young people get a decent job just pushing carts inside. Would I take mine back to the store? Sure but most the time its they want you to out them in the lots
Don't be ridiculous. The shopping carts in Florida cost upwards of $100. The groceries are very conscientious about retrieving them. The parking lots are huge, and not all customers are able to return the carts. At Publix, the bagger will always offer to help you to your vehicle. Two reasons: good customer service, and to retrieve the cart.
So yeah, in a place primarily occupied by semi-able seniors, of course the staff wants to bring in the carts ASAP. Each one is worth more than they earn in a day!:)

Missed one of Aldi’s biggest cost saving measures - speed at the tills. Employees are set targets on how many goods they must scan per hour. Barcodes are really big on Aldi products so that they can be scanned really quickly. Aldi staff don’t make conversation with you, they scan your items, take payment, then move on to the next customer straight away.

You missed how their product barcodes are printed on literally every side of their packaging. This means cashiers never have to spend time looking for a barcode and can pretty much just push every item over the scanner en masse, requiring less checkout lanes to be open, which means lower labor costs, shorter wait times for customers, and smaller store footprints. Not as big of a cost savings as their 90% generic brand model, but every bit counts!

I'm in Kansas US & have two amazing Aldi stores that are within just a few miles from my house and I'm going to list the things that my friends, family and I have found to be better tasting or just as good then your average Kroger or equivalent expensive grocery store at anywhere from 40 to 50% off the cost...
* caramel syrup (tastes just like the Brach's caramels but in syrup form)
* chocolate bars ( they are made with fine chocolate from Belgium or Germany and The Taste is amazing ... my favorite is the chocolate with toffee bits but there are loads of choices)
* ketchup
*peanut butter ( I have a couple dogs that I would rather give them their pills on peanut butter then to shut my finger down their throat and we love using peanut butter in our household and the price is so much cheaper)
* produce (soo much cheaper & quality is great) $1 for 2# of carrots is half the price of Kroger)
* canned tuna & salmon & sardines
* butter
* boxed brownies 85 cents & they are delightfully delicious
* baking supplies like flour sugar baking soda baking powder vanilla extract and now they're also offering coconut oil flax seeds chia seeds and all kinds of great things to bake with
I just grab a couple of the empty cardboard boxes from the shelves and use them in place of buying bags. The staff is fine with that. Saves them from collecting and compacting them. I recycle them when I'm done.
Me too, and I much prefer carrying a box of stuff into the house as opposed to picking up veggies or cans that are rolling all over the car floor and under the seats. Those plastic bags may work ok to carry a few items but set it down in the car and things tend to scatter.

I went shopping at Aldi for the first time yesterday afternoon and couldn’t believe how cheap it was. I spent $59.53 and my cart was full, I had a good 30+ items in my cart. Anywhere else, it would have been $90-$100. I saved about $40 and that, in the long run, is good for my wallet.

Aldi's is my primary store. I can't recall ever being unhappy with any products purchased there. The lines at checkout are seldom long, move fast and make cashiers in other stores appear to move unenthustically

Any employee of Aldi and Lidl will tell you that the wages are good but you'll have to do 3 persons work to earn it.
In every Lidl/aldi store you'll see ads for shop managers.The wages look very tempting but it's fools gold as all managers are expected to hit all targets and do loads of unpaid overtime.
In the aldi/Lidl shops & warehouses all overtime is paid flat rate for the blue collar workers.
Honestly, my Aldi's sucks lol. The employees always act like they're annoyed that you're shopping there, their produce is never fresh and their meats are cheap. Now Lidl, in my area, is another story. Their employees are always really nice and helpful, their produce (though not the best) isn't half bad and their meats are good. But I'm a "food snob" as my bf's mom likes to say lol and I prefer to get my produce from the local farmers market. And there a small little shop on main street that I like to get most of my baking supplies from and the local deli is where I get a lot of meats and seafood.

bonydox9 German aldi store manager here. I get over 64k a year but basically have no life cause i cant spend the money im earning. Working 60h week and doing 3 workers jobs and sometimes im just alone there in the morning doing everything till my staff comes. We look annoyed because we "have" to look annoyed. We dont want customers starting conversations with us (like other supermarkets) because there is simply no time for anything. Regarding overtime: I get every hour paid but sometimes im loggin myself "off" and keep work so my store kpi's numbers doesnt get too bad. But thats just once or twice a year
that would be ok if I was given about 6 weeks vacation with that.
I grew up with Aldi groceries and I have to say, they've really improved over the years. Their food selections, the quality of the food, the brand name products they carry are for cheap and the stores are typically clean. Also, their organic foods have gotten soooo much better.
Same here, I've noticed that too. I guess it could have something to do with the fact that Lidl started poaching a lot of their customers, Aldi finally took that as a sign to step up their game. Seems like they're still pretty under-staffed most of the time over here though, and the overall service is nothing to write home about either (no smiles...), but it's possible that could just be a local thing. Love their products though.

I find the staff at many Aldi's stores I've attended, to be very kind, courteous and conscientious.
They are always pleasant and friendly. Great at helping me find a particular product in the store. And when they're on the register, they kindly wait patiently for you to get your goods back in the trolley. No matter how slow you may be.

I guess the Aldi in my town just never really caught on, frankly. It's a pretty big one, but I never see more than 5-10 people inside, regardless the time of the day. My girlfriend jokingly calls it the "penal colony" sometimes, she thinks it's the end of the line for older, or disgruntled Aldi employees or something 😄
But I'm not one to complain really, I actually like shopping there. It has it's own charm, in an odd way.

When you have 2 major supermarket chains that have monopolised the market for decades. It's great to finally have a cheaper alternative.
I could easily spend $200 or more on half a trolley load at one of the 2 major supermarkets.
But then I go to Aldi. And get a packed full trolley for around $120-$150.. I love it! 😁

They are 16 and 3, I feed them a lot of different foods usually cereal for breakfast maybe lunch meat or hotdogs or something like that for lunch and meat potatoes and a veg for dinner
When I lived in the US for an extended period of time, I was very thrilled to see ALDI around. They even have some of the "brands" I know from Germany.
It wasn't quite the same experience but somewhat similar. I mean, in comparison to what was my favorite place to go shopping while in the US: Wegmans.
When WALMART tried to open stores in Germany, it didn't last very long. The essence of what made WALMART popular in the US was missing here: it wasn't cheap. It was only selling the same products as any other store to similar prices plus a few imported goods from the US for a lot of money.
Aldi essentially employs German techniques in the US. All of this is normal for every store in Germany.
That goes for the carts (which was a major source of annoyance when it was originally implemented for all grocery stores in Germany) as well as their limited stock.
They also have a lot of store brands. Aldi started that when I was a child. They stopped selling anything that was not store labelled. It’s still brand name stuff, but Aldi only sells it under a different label.
The brands give them lower cost items to sell to sell to Aldi at all. Therefore they also do the special boxes for Aldi.
That cash register that you saw in the movie wasn’t an Aldi register. German cashiers sit at the register and don’t stand. That goes for Aldi stores as well.

I used to love going to Aldi when I was a kid. My dad would put the stuff in the boxes and I would be able to use the boxes for crafted at home
I buy 95% of my groceries from Aldi and have done for about 4 years. I'm in Australia. I agree with everything in the video, they stock what sells quickly and leave slow movers for other shops. It is a very efficient set up, I like that. I have bought TV's, washing machines, ovens, driers and lots of tools there, most products are very well priced and reliable.

Bob Jackson: Correct, I have bought tools (mainly electrical types ) and they have all been heavily used over the past ten or so years, great value for money too.Much hardware e.g Bathroom Fittings, Taps, Locks etc are excellent products and beat Bunnings rip off prices by miles. e.g. Digital locks, $59.00 against Bunnings similar type at $189/99 etc., also metal fittings, and similar hardware a quarter and less of the price for the Chinese made items as sold by Bunnings. Problem is, they do not hold hardware items for more than a week at most and nothing is worse than seeing a box of Screws for example at $4.50a Kilo Box whilst Bunnings are selling similar screws in silly little packets of ZENITH Brandwith perhaps 5 or 10 screws for around $4.99 a pack.The same goes for nails and similar fixings.Terry Offord

Aldi in Australia sells house appliances? All the Aldi's I've been here in the US are generally smaller than a regular supermarket and not much bigger than a drug store.
I started going to Aldi about a month ago. And so far we save on average $400 a month. We used to shop at Wegmans or other stores. We don't spend more than $100 a week, unless we get extra items from the special buys or stocked up meats. It's honestly my favorite store!

This may be a local problem. Aldis in Arizona may have different suppliers than those in New Jersey, and since this is commented by an international audience different counties have different standards. Allso chicken quality may be different from beef quality.

If you have one near you it's really worth taking a look at. The one in my city is being expanded because they have done so well all these years.
I can't believe you didn't mention how not providing bags encourages the customers (like myself) take their display boxes, cutting down both on waste for the store and time paying someone to re-stock, or the fact that making you put a quarter deposit for the cart essentially turns the customers into cart pushers, and encourages someone to grab a loose cart they see (because, hey! Free quarter!)
Yeah but unfortunately it also encourages a lot of people (since it is shocking how many human beings are disgusting slobs in reality) to leave those boxes around the parking lot or front entrance of the Aldi.
The Aldi in my town looks like a tornado came through there within a few hours of opening and the employees inside never clean it up. The shopping center has to hire a person to exclusively clean up after Aldi.
It's insane and they've been talking about getting the health department on them about it for months.
Their cart policy, along with the no shopping bag policy is simply a way to externalize costs; making the customer pay for something they're too cheap to provide.

I work at Aldi. It’s an amazing company! It is a lot of hard work but it’s predictable which I like and it keeps you in shape. I do zero cardio at the gym. Win!! I came from working at Chickfila so it was an easy transition. It’s funny to me when people come in and say “are you hiring? I like the fact that you get to sit down at the register all day.” Ummmm false. Lol. I’m an Aldi fan for life. There’s nothing like it. Except the fact that our weekly special buys can take a majority of my check. There’s always something new and amazing!! I’m getting help. (I’m not really) lol.

Been an avid Aldi shopper in the US since 2005-06. I must have lived in at least 6 states (NY, PA, NC, FL, VA, MD) since then and luckily each had an Aldi or two within a driving range from my home. I may have saved thousands of dollars so far in groceries so far without compromising on the quality. And yes, they do pay their employees well which shows in the fabulous customer care they exhibit in the stores. I can vouch that 100% of everything stated about Aldi here is absolutely true. Lastly, I am proud that I should have added at least 40-50 new customers for Aldi sheerly by my recommendation. :-)
I've converted thousands at this point. Every one i know now shops at aldis. I am their unofficial advertisement department. I also tell my friends to advertise too.
I told them this recently and today the manager saw me and opened up a lane just to check me out. They really are an amazing store.

Walmart doesn't want to do this because it might discourage shoppers from taking one of their shopping carts that are way too oversized to fit down the aisles, and filling it to the top with stuff we don't need.
The parking lot is bad enough with the walking dead there, I can only imagine what it would look like with people trying to "checkout" a cart for use.

I started shopping at ALDI in Scotland over 20 years ago, when I moved to the Highlands my closest ALDI store was 120 miles away.
They opened a new ALDI in Inverness 8 years ago, since then, my life has been complete :))

I love Aldi! We spend about $100-$150 every two weeks for a family of 4 plus 2 cats, diapers and household supplies. Can't beat it!
They work their employees really hard- make them be a cashier, stocker and shipping/receiving all at the same time. That's why.

David Davidson - same as Lidl - very few staff, infact bare minimum, you pay in other ways though with long queues, Lidl i use even on a weekend, at times only one till on.

That's how it is in all supermarkets in Denmark. Granted we do get payed way more than you do in the US, but still I did the job when I was 17-18, and it wasn't hard at all. Never hurt anyone to walk (or run) a little!

FYI, a correction for this video at 0:55 time stamp: snack bags (pretzels, chips, popcorn, etc) don't contain oxygen. They're filled with nitrogen. Oxygen would quickly turn the chips stale. The nitrogen preserves the freshness of the chips, prevents combustion, and creates sufficient cushioning during shipping so the chips don't get crushed

That’s true - my favourite is the whole almond milk chocolate tablets Aldi UK sells. Something you’ll find easily in Europe but not otherwise in the UK.
Train Magic Yes, however the quality of actual chocolate produced here in the U.S. (Hershey's for example) is severely lacking compared to chocolate from European countries, which is what he was referring to.
European chocolate is better than American. It just is. I say that as an American. Swiss, German and Belgian chocolate in particular. Thus . . . "European quality."
You also missed one other thing I've noticed them doing... The queues in Aldi are exceptionally long for any store. They prefer to have as few people on the tills at any one time. This means they can get away with having less staff, and staff aren't constantly rotating between jobs. Instead by waiting for an extra 3-5 minutes, we are essentially paying for the reduction in prices, with our own time.
I don't shop there because the lines are always too long. When I do shop there, I just take my grocerys and leave without paying. Suckers.
Even the few times I've seen "long" lines, they still move very fast. I can't say that about any other grocery store. I've been shopping at Aldi for over 15 years.
They are so fast doing checkout that you have to pay attention.
I worked for a cereal company that made a lot of cereal for Aldi. They were a good company to do business with, unlike Walmart. They may not warehouse much, but the manufactures do. We had a huge section with just their product.
I love the algorithms of TH-cam. Just the other day I was bragging about this store in another post regarding celiac disease. They have a great selection of gluten free food and I was telling the other celiac patients about it. I love Aldi. The one near me keeps better produce than any store around. I usually forget my bags and have bought a few. But, I'd rather shop here than anyplace else!!

There's an Aldi a few blocks from my house. I tried it a couple of times and was put off by some of the oddities of the experience...and, to be frank, they don't carry any beer i drink. BUT...after watching this video i now think I've wrapped my mind around the concept. Excellent presentation!! I love efficiency and I'm going to make an effort to start shopping there regularly.
I just hope they never stop selling the jumbo raw shrimp from seaqueen! You won’t ever find a better deal in such an incredible high quality! It’s unbelievable!
We now have 3 Aldi locations nearby & tons of other grocery store chains, Aldi is very convenient for consistently finding Gluten Free items at great prices, they carry a wide selection of cheeses and frozen items and meats and seafood, Aldi is the only store I have been able to buy frozen asparagus and frozen brussel sprouts in steamer bags

In Australia,I find that often, ALDI 'runs' out of certain products, My experience has been, NO Lemon Juice (Bottle type) for almost three months, A Favorite Soup powder Asian Laksa, Best on the market, Stopped stocking it for past 6 months, Tins of Tuna, 20% Water (enables it to be sold cheaper than Rivals), Black Pepper Beef Soup (canned,) all of a sudden, no longer available but a sort of replacement now on shelf with a mere third of the Beef in it than the previous Black Pepper Beef soup had.
Aldi are Squeezing the manufacturers pricewise and if Aldi don't get the target price they insist on, the product goes off the shelf (That is my opinion)Fresh fruit etc., some is like the local fruiterer, OK for the price, other times, certain fruit, i.e. Bananas are $2.00 or more per Kilo ($3.99) at Coles by the way, but seldom do ALDI price their bananas at lower than $2.00. Much a case of Shop Around, buy at the best price but I have noted that in Australia many women are lazy shoppers, that is, they do NOT shop around and tend to throw mega bucks away at COLES, WOOLIES and IGA where they would be saving good dollars by buying at ALDI. I often see Pension age women BUYING Bottled water in Coles at many dollars a slab,in Melbourne, where the tap water is supurb. Musicksol I have only the slightest amount of sarcasm in the word 'glad' when I typed it, I clicked on the video because I was willing to watch it but the title made it seem like there may have been some negative truths as well as some positive ones but watching through that was not the case so thats why I consider it to pretty much be a 8 minute ad for Aldi. I love Aldi's, their fast checkout, their cart pickup/return proceedures, their product selection, etc. Off hand, I can't remember ever disliking any product.
I wrote a report in 2007 about an oncoming recession and aldis ability to dominate the market in future. it actually happened. I won't have been the first person to know but in early 2000s businesses were living in a bubble of debt while aldi were doing things with German efficiency. (old Germans didn't trust loans/credit)

Its just the German model. Thats how they keep costs down for consumers with the 19 percent sales tax and all of the rest of the high tax rates over there. In many cases in Germany, food is cheaper over there than in the US although electronics and gas are outrageous.

Well, essential food is 7 percent tax...processed food has 19 percent. Meaning Milk has 7 percent, the ready-made yogurt with fruits 19 percent. If you buy eggs they are 7 percent, but there is a special provision in the law that eggs without shells are 19 percent.

They offer 19 an hour for assistant manager at aldis n every 6-12 months they re post the position like clock work.

Aldi's has a freshness problem with fruits and vegetables. Many Items delivered to stores are already in the process of spoiling; meaning the food has been sitting around to long or has taken too long to deliver. I often suspect that in order for Aldi's to provide lower prices they buy food at the wholesaler for a discount that other stores have looked over. When Cauliflower has brown spots this means it is old and needs to be discarded, when Blueberries are moldy this means the berries are old and needs to be thrown away, when Broccoli stalks are like rubber it means the broccoli is old and needs to be thrown away, but that is what Aldi's is selling in their stores and the prices are now higher then Walmart for many items.

While the video is informative and mostly correct; your visuals are a little confusing. You continually switched between Aldi Sud (Aldi South) and Aldi Nord (Aldi North) logos. The original parent company in Germany split several years ago. The company known as Aldi in the US and Canada is a division of Aldi Sud - Aldi Nord in North America is known as "Trader Joe's" - and now you know.

To different companies with very similar values about quality, pricing and how to treat people. Trader Joe's was around for ages in California before going national. They still are mainly in major Metropolitan area. Aldi came from the East coast and still isn't everywhere which may be why some are saying it isn't in America. Aldi's parent company acquired Trader Joe's in the early aughts.

I've worked for Aldi for 17yrs now..I like how the company helps me to always strive to be and do my best and walk away at the end of my shift feeling a sense of accomplishment and a job well done! :)

I pretty much exclusively shop for food at Aldi's. I am very sensitive to artificial food colors in particular and since most Aldi's brand food uses natural coloring (usualy fruit and vegetable juices) it doesn't give me headaches. Their produce is usually very good though during the winter it is somewhat limited because they usually try to carry mostly seasonal fruits but it is still good. Also, their rotational approach to food specials helps keep me from getting stuck in a rut and adds variety to my diet. Last of all, their food is just so much better both in cost and quality, I love both their chocolate and their icecream better than almost anywhere else. The only other places that have icecream flavors I particularly like are Braums (their white chocolate raspberry cheesecake and cappuccino chunky chocolate are really good and I haven't found those specific flavors anywhere else) and the Ben and Jerry's Toast the Roast. Other than one or two other very specific food items that I have only found at Walmart I rarely go anywhere besides Aldi's, I even get clothing and home items from there when they occasionally carry them, I really like their socks. 😁
Bring your own reusable bags - they hold more and you don't end up with overflowing drawers of trash!
The bags they sell are also quite big and reusable.

Aldi is amazing. My wife does our shopping, and Aldi's is her first choice, only going to another store for those items Aldi's doesn't carry.

And the last time I was at an Aldi's.....I was returning my cart when I saw a lady putting her child in the child seat but I noticed the cart she used beside her car. I asked her if she'd like me to return the cart so she didn't have to undo the child and take the cart back. She said, "oh thank you. I figured I'd have to take my child out and take the cart back....Thank you so much." I even gave her the quarter to take her cart back. After I had loaded up my truck and went around the truck to the driver side, I heard a lady yell out of her window, " I wanted to thank you again.....Thank you so much." Remember, people can do good things to help people in a parking lot.

This is a constant thing at Aldi. Sometimes people don't have ask for their quarter back, they just hand you the cart. Then pass it on to the next person on your way out of the store.

The grocery market is extremely competitive in Germany.
There are several mayor chains wich more or less directly compete with each other, often you will find the stores only a few meters apart from each other.
There are „Lebensmitteldiscounter“ like Aldi, Lidl, Penny, Plus, Netto, Kaufland and so on and „Supermärkte“ like Edeka, Rewe and some smaller ones.
These and several other chains belong to only four mayor corporations.
So it‘s either be efficient or die.
we have grocery stores right next to each other in the US, too, and often several different companies within short driving distance of each other, but they don't have to be minimalist fanatics to stay in business

True. The best measure in efficiency is found in the value delivered/received. Aldi is efficient.
I like their random tools and hardware stuff that pop up throughout the year - some of them are actually very good quality. Paul Sellers - very well known woodworker in England swears by their chisels and buys them for his school for students to use. In the US they were $6 - great deal!
Aldi moved in across from a Walmart. Milk at W.M. is $0.69 gallon, dozen eggs $0.45 now.
18 oz box of Rice Crispies is $0.75, 24 oz box of Corn Flakes are $1, Bananas are routinely $0.36 a pound and the list goes on...

Wow. I never gave Aldi much thought before, but I'm impressed with the way they save money. Now I want to check it out, there's a store pretty close by.
They always have nice produce, even if the selection may not be huge. As a chef I LOVE all the cost saving measures they take as a company. It passes the savings along to the consumer and allows them to have good quality products for a lower price. Gotta love ALDI.
Aldi seems to have a clean store good prices and you can usually find a cart with a quarter in it.
