This is one of the most charming movies ever. I was only 19 when I saw it first in the theater.... I only saw it because it happened to be playing when I arrived to the theater. Was going thru some young-adult 'drama' in my life at the time. As soon as it started....I felt sort of a healing. Since then....I watch it once each year during winter, and I'm nowhere near sick of it. Love everything about it - yet I still can't summarize why I love it so much.
I also watched it first when I was about your age. Did not understand the story at all, but thought it was a good movie and did not know why, until I moved to the US 7 years ago and moved to the Midwest after one year in Florida. I watched again and began understood, as I know people and their life here. Almost everything in the movie touches my feelings. Love the music so much too. Have been watching it more than once a year, especially in winter times. And the movie still keeps growing on me.
Life is simple. People make it hard. We all have a song to sing and we all belong. Our imperfections don't matter, only our intentions. We all have a goodness in our hearts, sometimes you just have to look a harder to find it. I guess that's what i take from it. Newman has always been my favorite actor and i always thought this role was perfect for him. Sometimes i wonder if he's even acting in it. Such a great film.
@@qite291 Thanks for sharing. All the music indeed is lovely. Remember the music theme playing while he let his grandson Will drive the car? So good. And *all* the interactions with Melanie Griffith and Bruce Willis, just lovely
Charming is the perfect word. Such a comfortable experience. Huh, who knew you could make a movie without green screen & a billion dollar budget? One of my favorites. Never gets old.
I'M 71 or 72 not sure half the time, I first watched this movie while living in Western NY. It was cold out and more than likely snowing, What I came to realize most of all is that this entire story is set in the dead of winter and nothing but snow in every scene. So I ask my self how in watching this movie can I feel warm inside and out. Well is understandable to me now, Its about real people living a difficult life in a town that's washed up. The thing that bonds them together is the need for "each other" as is shown in the scene where Sully decides that he cant leave the "BABE" of his life for his worn down friends. They need him, the town needs him, even the police, the one lagged lawyer and Judge, most of all his eight grade teacher needs him. This story is about real life in most American towns. Oh buy the way Newman has to be the greatest REGULAR GUY you could ever want to know.
What a wonderful, gentle movie. It flows like a majestic, winding river, with some ripples and even a few rough patches, but just keeps on going along until before you know, it has left you sweetly at the end, and you are sad to leave . . . .
It is quite the movie. Expresses themes similar to Its a Wonderful Life, perhaps more discreetly and with way better music. The score is stunning. All the actors are at their best, Newman and Tandy especially. One of my top 10.
that house he grew up in, he still carried that trauma he was subjected to as a youth. His grandson was going thru some, he knew his son and wife fought. Perhaps the only pain he could not joke about like he did about everyone else being messed up was his own pain. His grandson brought it to the surface. Perhaps he saw himself, at that age. Once he dealt with it, he could change and be even a better and more loveable person. Acceptance and forgiving himself. Broke my heart when Jessica paid his taxes, and his attorney told him say thank you. Her own son was pathetic. Would put her in a home, he didn't care for her, just gave her lip service. The mother who wandered into the snow, him going and talking to her, not at her. His friend, assuring him that Peter was his son. But telling his friend he was his best friend, and he tears up, gets me everytime. Melanie's husband unfaithful and such a cretin. He kept them all going, with logic and a great sense of humour. He was not mean. Such a great film. Of all the roles, this one and 'The Verdict', his finest films.
I agree. One of the most realistic films I've ever watched. Both tough and tender. Steel Magnolias is another. And Paul Newman was absolutely magnificent. Hats off
That period in the 90s was so great.. This film was equal to them.. Plus Paul Newman & Tandy's greatness... Fan of Bruce Willis, 1 of his best. Mel Griffith's last thing I remember enjoying. Just a cool little film...
I was 11 and this would play on hbo constantly and it was a tough watch at that age, but it’s an all time favorite of mine and introduced me to Paul Newman and the misery of winter in this hits home too
Should have won an Academy Award for this movie maybe he was nominated I don't know but he was great and it beginning to the end of his career he was great in everything this movie really was a blessing to see him do in the cast Bruce Willis it was a really good movie kind of reminded me of where I came from an upstate New York winter that is very cool
Our Regal 8 screen cinema had this gem, The Shawshank Redemption, Pulp Fiction, Quiz Show, and Forrest Gump all at the same time. What a year for movies! We even had a special display lobby card section for Pulp Fiction, as Tarantino was born in Knoxville.
One of my favorite movies as well as one of my favorite books. I know everyone always says the book is better than the movie, but in this case I think they both hold up equally. The book is much more complex and paints Sully in a slightly different light, but the character is still there. If you like the movie, check out some other books by Mr Russo, Straight Man is especially good.
Such an awesome movie! Sad that the great majority of the great talents have gone, and along with that the quality of the movies have sunk to a new level.
I don't remember much about many movies I have seen but this one has taken longer to be dimmed by the passage of time. I can't quite put my finger on why? I have aged right along with it, grew up not far from the setting and it is all so relatable. .
In questo film si sono uniti alcuni dei migliori attori degli primi anni novanta. Non ha nulla di davvero geniale, ricco di dialoghi sensibili e intelligenti e mi sono innamorata di Sally dal primo momento, ed è perfetto così.
Great film, one of Paul's best. His son's character always bothered me...he was a putz. But Paul was simply great, along with several other fine supporting performances.

Charming is the perfect word. Such a comfortable experience.

One of my favorites. Never gets old.
Just wish these actors were still around. ❤
Not only one of my favorite Paul Newman movies but one of my all-time favorites.
Mine too Steve Goehring
Such an underrated movie. A classic masterpiece.
it is!
Paul Newman should have received an oscar for this performance, great film

Newman in many ways holds the town together.
I can’t think of a finer last scene for an actor. RIP Jessica Tandy
My wife absolutely loves this film. We watch it every chance we get.
The scenes with Paul Newman and Jessica Tandy are sublime poetry
This movie never gets old - full of many small-town-isms I can relate to and played to perfection. Every scene is a little golden nugget.
Two of the finest actors to ever grace the screen
What a wonderful, gentle movie. It flows like a majestic, winding river, with some ripples and even a few rough patches, but just keeps on going along until before you know, it has left you sweetly at the end, and you are sad to leave . . . .
Oof u hit me with that for some reason. I'm feeling the blues lately..
@@michaelgerrardtyson4197 Hope that your feelings have changed for the better. Take care!
An absolutely wonderful movie with tons and tons of heart.
I never get tired of watching this film, NEVER! Our family holiday staple. 🎅
That's a masterpiece!
What a great character, played to perfection.

Michael Doyle Tandy my love
THIS MOVIE HAS JUST TOO MUCH CLASS!!!!!!!
Wonderful movie! And so little known. it just has a mellow, peaceful feel throughout, with the tone set by its star.
One of my mom's pieces of artwork is in this film!!
Absolutely wonderful movie. Those who are unaware of it do not know what they are missing.
Fantastic movie! Paul Newman was the man. Between this, The Hustler, and Hud, you couldn't ask for a better movie.
I saw Hud the other day i enjoyed it more than i thought i was going to!
Newman made this character so real. I can see and feel this town, the places, it is so great.

A real down to earth movie that I can relate to.

The most underrated movie of all time, that't not fair! I love it and i will show it to my children and my grandchildren ❤️❤️❤️

Sullys character never say die
One of the greatest movies ever. It simply brilliant.

If you know you know …
Such a great movie. Paul Newman was a true treasure.
One of those movies you have to see several times to appreciate it more and more.
That period in the 90s was so great..
This film was equal to them..
Plus Paul Newman & Tandy's greatness...
Fan of Bruce Willis, 1 of his best.
Mel Griffith's last thing I remember enjoying.
Just a cool little film...
Smiles and warm feelings accompany these two scenes. The final scene is the way I will always remember Newman. Thanks for posting.
Now there are three of us. :)
To all of those people who don't like this movie, watch it again when you hit 40 or 50. You'll get it then. GREAT movie!
I have always loved this movie .....it truly is a treasure to watch from time to time
A perfect film, and one of my absolute favorites.
fantastic film. simple but genius.
My favourite movie. Perfect in every way.
I was 11 and this would play on hbo constantly and it was a tough watch at that age, but it’s an all time favorite of mine and introduced me to Paul Newman and the misery of winter in this hits home too
Such a great film. Has such a fantastic aura around it with a terrific razor sharp script.

He was nominated for this
This is such an awesome scene. Love Newman and Pruitt Taylor Vance is perfect as well.
Definitely a top 3 favorite of all time!
Absolutely
My favorite scene was when Will takes the prosthetic leg over to Werf and Grandpa (Newman) gives him that "atta boy" response. Gets me every time.
I wish this was on Netflix.
Its on Hulu
Amazon Prime
Welcome to the best of small town America. This movie nails it.
Sully reminds me so much of my late grandfather!!!
The Phrase "A man's man" never applied more than for Paul Newman
Fantastic Movie! I was 18 and working in a movie theater when it was playing. I even own the soundtrack!

How Paul Newman did not more win more Oscar’s is a mystery to me. What a tremendous American actor. RIP sir ….

Such an awesome movie! Sad that the great majority of the great talents have gone, and along with that the quality of the movies have sunk to a new level.
Character rich stories are always the best ….
Excellent Movie

"Aahhhh.....should've stayed in jail". What a simple but hilarious line.
Carried that Cool Hand Luke smile and all his movies
Paul Newman really admired Jessica Tandy.
great great great actors.

My life for real
Beautiful
A good movie that reminds me of a good time in my life. Not too sentimental
Not now not ever!
I’m an elderly woman. Behind the counter. In a small town.
Paul Newman. ❤
a real actor. could play a working class guy, to a CEO.
They don’t make them like this anymore
Love this movie
Respect

the best movies for me i love
Dog movies are great. Never saw Paul do a dog movie before. It looks cute.
I feel like Sully some days.
Not a movie just real life
Good ol Doc Hudson
Don't you just hate it when the great ones make it look so easy ?
I wish more movies were like this and LESS like action/comic book movies..
Why can't they make movies like this anymore
They're too busy cranking out superhero movies....which bore the hell outta me.
I always thought this movie had a humanity to it .
J.J. LaRoche!
枯れたポール・ニューマンが渋い映画だったなー
Would be a great movie if they didnt say GD all the time. Why do they have to do that.
It’s how real adults talk.
Beautiful
Love this movie
