  • This mini video shows a quick way to change the colours [of the outline or fill] on multiple objects using stacked HSL adjustment layers.
How do you change the stroke colour of dozens of stacked and rotated shapes easily? This question popped up in the 'Affinity Designer - Hands-on' Facebook group. Rather than do a manual change to each copy, I tried solving it by stacking HSL adjustment layers with a HUE shift.
It turned out to be surprising and fun :)

Very cool technique...it never occurred to me how HSL adjustment layers could accumulate like that.

Ok, now I understand how the interleaved HSL layers accumulate the hue shift. I thought power duplicate was incrementing the original shift. Still a cool trick though

Glad it helped! Power duplicate can only change basic properties of an object - position, rotation, scale, and skew. Combined well that's a powerful tool but it can't make changes to the fill or stroke properties of the objects. That's where the adjustment layers come in.

Well done. That,s a great find. I’ll try it. Did you find other properties that work incrementally with power duplicate besides the usual transform parameters ?

There are a few fun things to try out with different blend modes or adjustment layers like invert, gradient map or lense filter.
I uploaded a second video on the HSL and applied it to some more elaborate examples.

Is anyone trying this on version 2.5? When I hit Ctr+J it will change the HSL colour but it won't power duplicate (rotate), keeping the HSL adjustment layers together on top and the group (symbols) layers together below instead of interperse them (HSL Group, HSL Group, HSL Group...) what am I doing wrong?

I just tried it in v.2.5 and it works. You need to create the symbol, add the HSL layer on top [not attached to the symbol], group the symbol and the HSL layer, duplicate and adjust [move, rotate, scale or skew], power duplicate, and finally select all and ungroup.
