Well Duncan was an elite player right off the bat. He was an all star and all nba 1st team his rookie year. Also he won an NBA championship before Kobe did and never missed the playoffs.
Because Tim Duncan went to college for 4 years and started. He also had roster and coaching stability his entire career. Kobe played with a roster devoid of talent during his peak years and endured a coaching parasol from Rudy T, to Frank Hamblen, Mike Brown etc.
Tim is great # 10 all-time, in my view. Kobe is #3 all-time. You can't really compare the 2. 1 played for the Lakers, coming with it the circuses. 1 played for the spurs. Model of consistency and selflessness ball. 1 was mentored and wanted day 1. The other was relegated to the bench by a coach that didn't want him, or trust players out of high-school. 1 had the same core "big 3" for 15 years and the same system and coach. 1 had a carousel of coaches and 1 superstar. Let's be honest, Kobe played with less help and still thrived.
That's false. Tim Duncan never played with the most dominate player in NBA history who was also at the time the best player in the league for a number of years. (Shaq). That's better than any player that Tim Duncan has played with. Kobe had Phil Jackson who was already established as an all time great coach due to his success with the Jordan Bulls. Popovich was a rookie head coach that no one heard of when Tim Duncan first came into the league. Kobe was fortunately to play with an organization that has a history of winning championships with the Lakers unlike the Spurs that even to this day has never won anything without Tim Duncan. Unlike Kobe, Tim actually put an organization on the map. Tim Duncan obviously did more with less.
Just as good not better not lesser I give kobe the edge because he had to be the guy and duncan had alot of teammates he could rely on wherever you have kobe duncan should be 1 ahead or right behind
I feel like Duncan almost objectively had a better or at least more accomplished career. Doesn’t necessarily mean he was a better individual player but in terms of pure accomplishments/accolades and consistency of team success I feel like it’s pretty definitive.
True, but remember Kobe was robbed of the MVP in 2006. He led the NBA in scoring, while making 1st Team All-Defense something Steve Nash didn't do. Kobe is the only player alongside Jordan to average 35+ppg and make 1st Team all-defense in the same season. Kobe was tied for 1st in PER that season. Furthermore Steve Nash had another teammate finish top 10 in MVP voting in the same year Kobe didn't. Kobe had a historic season while playing with a team that to this day has the 3rd worst offensive side rating in NBA HISTORY when he was off the court.
@@koolkai4299 definitely agree Kobe had the statistical argument to get that MVP, I believe that was the season he dropped 81 as well? It was just the team success, the Lakers finished as the 7 seed that season and lost to the Suns in first round. The team he has around him was terrible, not his fault they finished that low of course but before Russ won his MVP giving it to anyone below the 4 seed hadn’t happened in like 50 years or something lol. I have a soft spot for Nash and I definitely think there are very strong arguments that he was the MVP at the time but I can’t argue that statistically Kobe was on another level especially that season.

I don’t know how this ever became an argument, Duncan was and had a better career the Kobe, it’s not an insult, just a fact
Then you should have no problem putting Tim over Bron then if there's no argument at all for Kobe over Tim
Not an argument. Dude won 1k games. He won 70% of the games he played in. He NEVER missed the playoffs. Every season the Spurs were guaranteed to win 50 games except for 99 when there were only 50 games played and rhe Spurs went 37-13. Thats a 60 win pace.
5 titles, 2 MVPs, 3 Finals MVPs, 15x All NBA AND All Defense (only player ever). Part of the winningest Big 3 ever. AND he never played with someone like Shaq.
Duncan is the best player of his generation. Real ones know this. No disrespect to Kobe, he's Top 10 all time. But Tim should be Top 5. Not many players won the way he did. If Ray Allen misses that 3, no one is debating this.
Tim Duncan is the greatest to play his position kobe is second greatest for his position that sums it up
If you accept.the lie that he was the power forward. Or he is the 5th best center...

Tim Duncan is also arguably better than LeBron. More titles in less time, no flopping, and both are Forwards.
They both won 5 chips & they both had to get through each other to get those chips!! I think their careers are neck & neck! Mr. Fundamental & Mamba! 😤😤
So refreshing to hear legit, good opinions about basketball over those professional opinion-havers in the mainstream. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
I remember watching Spurs games and they would go on stretches wher duncan would have 25/14 in the 3rd quarter and would be blowing teams out and Duncan would get pulled for the rest of the game! Imagine if he was allowed to stay in just to collect stats
Tim Duncan is higher on my all time list. They have similar accolades, but Tim Duncan is a top 3 defender of all time which bumps him above Kobe for me.

As a long time Spurs fan, it's good to hear the respect you guys have for Timmy. Kobe, Shaq and the Lakers gave the Spurs some great battles in the early 2000's. Look up Kobe on how he felt about Timmy and the Spurs, he had the upmost respect for them. Thanks for all the great memories Black Mamba, and rest easy...
As a Kobe guy myself, saying Duncan was arguably better than Kobe shouldn’t sound like a hot take. There’s a pretty strong case than can be made.
Edit: I'm not saying Duncan was better than Kobe, just that a very strong argument can be made for Duncan.

mmmm duncan and lebron is crazy
i think kyrie and joker is crazy combo that would win alot as well
@@mentalprograming5365 Joker and Kyrie would be crazy. Jamal Murray is a great number 2, but Ky is the ultimate number 2. He's arguably the greatest finisher of all time (for a non-big at least), and with Denver's cut-heavy offense generating chances in the paint for him, his efficiency would probably skyrocket with Joker. Temperamentally I feel like they'd click too. Ky has been number 2 to Bron and Luka, and I think he's finally comfortable with that role as a 1b option. Also, famously a really good locker room guy. Anything you're getting with Jamal you're getting with Irving, plus extra.

Yes, he did. No bad years. Always in contention
For the people missing the point.
Better career ≠ better player
Tim Duncan obviously did more with less.
if cp0 didn't hit the buzzer shot at 2015, That spurs was going back to back
I agree, I say that all the time, I do though still think Kobe was maybe the better player but Duncan played for a franchised that always backed him.

“Duncan was smacking Lebron around” the 2 times the Spurs beat Lebron Duncan wasn’t even finals MVP neither was Steph.
