You are right. But you can't compare their first years in a 1 to 1 comparison. Tim Duncan went to college and having better help, let him score easier. KG was a skinny 18 year old, without the same level of help. So defenses could clamp down on him and not have to worry about him passing. I feel like KG's first 2 seasons shouldn't even count because he was skinny and really should have went to college for a year or two.
@@Davivd2 KG was an all-star at the same time Duncan was. It has nothing to do with college and KG being skinny. He was naturally not as physically big as Duncan. Duncan's edge was he was wider than KG and could post up on the block easily unlike KG.

I started watching nba in 2007 so wasnt really familiar with a lot of 90s and early 00s guys but I watched enough hardwood classics on nba tv in the early 2010s to know some of the earlier guys. I remember watching hardwood classic lakers vs Trail Blazers 2000 western conference finals game 7 bonzi going crazy against LA
Pretty much lol. The disrespect is real. Tim was an absolute monster on both ends from day 1 and is roundly acknowledged as the best PF of all time. This isn’t a personality contest.

Sheed is just salty he lost to one legged TD in 2005 finals. KG was drafted in 1995 and got traded to Boston in 2007. During his tenure with Minnesota he reached wcf once. Duncan had 4 chips already at that time.

@@rnssr71 it’s a bad mark on the league, IMO. Dude was All-NBA and All-Defense in his first 13 seasons, only player in history to accomplish that. He anchored one of the consistently greatest defenses in the league for 15 seasons. He did all of that and not a single DPOY? That’s a blight on the league as far as I’m concerned.

KG had a more varied offensive game and would appeal to a certain segment who love his persona. But it took him time to get to his peak because he joined the league straight out of high school. Duncan played all four years of college even though he could have entered the draft earlier. Maybe KG would have achieved the same or even more if they exchanged places, but maybe he wouldn't be able to diversify if he played in a different system. Individual success, in my opinion, is still shaped by the context of the team. This is why I would pick Duncan even though I love KG.

Prime Tim Duncan was in a great system that fit his style. No answer is really wrong. Prime KG was something too. Ferocious on both ends. When he got talent on Minnesota, they were good. If you’re just talking straight hooping. This is a toss up.

Love this podcast but I gotta disagree with Sheed and Bonzi. KG was carrying Minnesota for sure, but it never amounted to any substantial success save for 2004, and right after that they missed the playoffs for three straight years smack dab in KG's true prime. It's hard to imagine Duncan missing the playoffs because he literally never did. Garnett is more athletic, a better passer, and a more versatile defender, but his offensive game didn't demand the double and triple teams like TD's did because he wasn't a dominant post-up player. Pop started scaling back on Timmy's minutes early on in his career too, during his prime, which along with the Spurs' defensive, low # of possessions strategy, helped deflate his stats in his prime and ultimately across his career. KG was awesome, and Minny's front office sucked for years, but Duncan shouldn't be penalized for having truly dominant success on a good team. I feel that KG helping transform a mediocre team to a perennial first round exit/slightly better but still just on the bubble playoff team is less impressive than Duncan turning a perennial playoff underperformer into one of the most successful teams of his era.

We also gotta stop acting like KG was out there playing 1 on 5 while Duncan was playing with the Dream Team. And the Spurs never went to the lottery while he was there!! The Wolves had so much talent, on top of those all stars you mentioned, they had other lottery picks that were there who just didn’t pan out. Meanwhile, the Spurs had to rummage through the end of the draft, G-league, and weren’t really a free agency destination. Love KG too but, even he said Duncan put him in his place.
KG is a prime example of stats do not always tell the full story, KG affected the games he played in every aspect.
Sheed misremembering a bit. They gave the reigns to Duncan after his rookie season lol. In 1998 they drew up a play for Duncan vs the Jazz for a game winner in game 2. In the playoffs, Duncan carried them offensively right off the BAT! Against Phoenix, Lakers, Jazz etc. I"m a Spurs fan and remember all of this. Garnett was too passive in crunch time.

Rings matter when comparing teams, and Timmy certainly had the better team.
Look at their stats it shows Garnett is better. And that's something based off individually, not team wise. Assist, steals, rebounds, free throws and even points. Garnett has the edge. Duncan never lead his team in multiple statistics.
Timmy on any team. He was the most unstoppable PF to ever play! And the second most skilled post player in history behind Olajuwan.

Facts, 5th in MVP voting in his rookie year. 15 All nab defensive teams, could play any style of ball (post centric, PnR heavy, heavy ball movement) and won chips doing so. If KG and TD switched teams, Wolves probably win 3 chips, and you wouldn't even know Ginobli and Parker.
Not right away though, especially not in his rookie season when Duncan averaged 21.1 ppg and Robinson averaged 21.6 ppg.
They like KG better as a person and Duncan beat them both in huge spots (Blazers, Pistons) so they'll automatically say KG was better.

Tim Duncan would not have won anything in Garnett’s shoes in Minnesota from 1995-2007 playing with Sam Cassell, Malik Sealy, Sprewell, and Wally World. You want context? Duncan won in '03 in a Shaq & Kobe West--closed out the Finals with a quad-double that was incorrectly recorded. That team's 2nd-leading scorer was 19-YO Tony Parker who would sometimes get benched in the playoffs for stretches of the 4th for Speedy Claxton. 3rd-leading scorer was 24-YO Stephen Jackson and fourth was MALIK ROSE. David Robinson could barely move in 2003.
You just saw a bunch of names of great players and didn't consider the context of where they were in their careers.

Tim Duncan was almost always surrounded by really good to great players for most of his career, so I understood where Sheed is coming from. Personally Matchup wise KG cant see Duncan... But I feel Sheed on this.
I see where you're coming from but people forget WHY those players seemed good/great. TD made everyone better, he was a selfless leader who let his teammates eat when they were hot, had high IQ to help them get theirs, didn't care what his stat line was as long as they won.. that's why we say he had better teammates, and that's why people struggle to see why TD unfortunately

Yes he does make everyone better through his play style and being in that Popovich eco system where everyone has to be selfless to a degree in order to gel cohesively.
But those same players Manu and Tony Parker were them dudes and can go to any team and still be them dudes. Then we're talking about the vets whom have been part of championship teams, like Mario Elie and Kevin Willis out of Houston Rockets (tho I'm a lil sus on Kev). Steve Kerr, Robert Horry again championship pedigree. And also the influx of European players whom overseas are legit dudes... Patty Mills, Boris Diaw. TD was the ultimate anchor for all of these guys but that's also cuz of the Culture Popovich and management created and maintained.

And as petty as people want to be, I'm being petty back. Coming from college or coming from Highschool, which one is more impressive 🤔??? The obvious answer is Highschool. And look at how Garnett's career turned out from it. People stay disrespecting Garnett. And I know it's young people that never seen him play earlier in. Duncan chose to finish college, and it wasn't for being groomed to be an NBA player. Greg wanted him earlier than that.

Bad logic, we all know if you got no help you carry more of the load. You get more touches, they even said so in the interview. You get more opportunities to score cus you got the green light at all times. So DESPITE having help, Tim Duncan was more efficient and scored more whilst KG was struggling.

I think KG was better in his prime, but Duncan had the better career overall although he was very lucky with the coach & great players he had around him right from the jump. Duncan also came into the league very polished from college, KG didn’t since he came straight out of high school. This debate will go on for generations.

Sheed is correct in pointing out context: KG was the player having to carry thinner teams, whereas the Admiral would have won at least 5 titles playing Duncan's years being on stacked team throughout his entire career with Popovich AND lacking elite big fellow centers* outside of Shaq and some Dwight/Yao.
*Duncan was the Spurs' primary rim-protector, which means center, sharing the role with Admiral then being the sole top shot blocker for the vast majority of his career.
Kg had a bigger ceiling but Duncan had an entire franchise / system / coach / supporting star all tailored right for him

It was one man in (Duncan) and four men out. It worked. Duncan actually might have won 1 championship in Minnesota. That 2003 Spurs team was not great. Rookie Ginobili, 2nd year parker (who was benched at times for speedy claxton), old David Robinson (with bad stats) and young Stephen Jackson. Duncan won MVP that year for a reason. Duncan had a Dike/Hakeen-like run where the dropoff between him and that 2nd best player was enormous. Spurs had no business beating that 3-peat Lakers team, but Tim was amazing in that series.
I don't think that 2003 team was any more talented than KG's 2004 team. Especially if you don't just look at the names on the jerseys, and actually look at the stats of the supporting cast that year.

He was the number one option even as a rookie. Robinson was old and on his way out. Spurs were a 30 win team with Dennis Rodman before and after.

What did Minnesota ever win with KG. Nothing, KG was more of a talented athlete, but TD is the best power forward ever.
It was also Kevin Garnett's fault why the Timberwolves had a hard time finding a good supporting cast during his time there. After his rookie contract, the Timberwolves offered him a max contract, which was very good for a young all-star caliber player like he was. But he refused and wanted a supermax contract immediately, and that deal would make it impossible for the Timberwolves to sign new players or even keep their own.
As a result, his contract was one of the reasons for the lockout during the 1998-99 season. Because Kevin Garnett demanded more than he should have, the Timberwolves couldn't sign good and reliable players to be his supporting cast, as they might go over the salary cap due to Garnett's massive contract.
In my opinion, Tony and Manu progressed significantly early in their careers because Tim Duncan allowed them to play their own style of basketball. Since Tim was in his prime at that time, he encouraged Tony and Manu to take over games to boost their confidence. This collaborative approach, guided by Pop, helped them grow and mesh together seamlessly, avoiding conflicts and ego clashes. On the other hand, with KG and Marbury, there were different dynamics. KG's massive payday and clashes of egos hindered their team chemistry and progress. Unlike Tim, who was a great leader and passed the torch early, KG struggled to gain the respect and unity of his teammates, leading to missed opportunities for growth and success.

This isn't even a conversation. Minnesota had the best record in the league one year and didn't win when Cassell had a great year and Sprewell was still good. Tim Duncan is one of the all time greats and KG, great as he was, is not mentioned on that level. Duncan was top 5 MVP 9 times vs. 5 for KG.
Coaching and structure matters
To Tim Duncan's credit, he outplayed the 1999 MVP Karl Malone in 2/3 regular season games that season. Tim Duncan rose to his prime pretty quickly after entering the NBA.
You already know my answer... not taking anything away from KG, and Sheed was incorrect on some of his comments. Tim was the #1 option when he came in. David was on the tail end of his career past his prime and with Timmy joining that team, they have the highest winning percentage in any in history, which noone really ever talked about.
