I've been to Florence but this trip we are going to Rome first then Florence. Five days in each city so we won't be too rushed. We are coming in April so hopefully not too crowded.
My number one gelateria is always Vivoli (pronounced VI-voli - accent on first syllable), followed by Sorbettiera and Gelateria della Passera, both across the river. Thanks for the timely tips on other places here.
Oops! Accent placement in Italian can we tricky. We were basing it on Vivaldi, but we should have asked for the pronunciation. Good gelaterie mentioned. We enjoyed all three. Thanks!
Curiosity: STRACCHINO comes from the Northern Italy dialect STRAC or STRACCO, which means "tired". In fact this cheese is made from the latest milk caught from cows at the end of the day, when the cows are... Tired! In a few words "sono STRACCHE". I LOVE YOU NICE COUPLE!!!!! ❤❤❤❤ I suggest you visiting my area: Franciacorta (province of Brescia) and enjoioying the wine, the food and the landscape. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Close-ish. Stracche is correct, but the tiredness did not come from the end of the work day, but because of the end of the free grazing season, when they bring cows back to their stables in the valley after having spent summer grazing in the fields up in the hills/mountains. Tiredness from the trip plus the switch from fresh grass to hay and dry feed made cows produce less milk, but fatter. That's what was traditionally used to make stracchino.
Oops. Thanks for pointing that out. Accent location can be tricky, but I should have guessed from the double “c” it would be before them. We never heard an Italian say it. Asking or using a dictionary would have been a good idea.
Bravissimi!😍as always great advice, I prefer lampredotto as a course, a "secondo piatto": lampredotto con le patate (with potetoes) or lampredotto con i funghi (with mushrooms)
Wine window - do they supply the glasses? Do you return the glasses ? or is it like Christmas markets in Germany where you pay a deposit and then either return or keep?
About Lampredotto's name: 1)The origin comes from the innate irony of the Florentines. 2)the suffix "-otto" in slang can be used to define something smaller or lower quality than the original. In Arno, until the last century it was rich in a very delicious freshwater fish, which was consumed during the Renaissance by the richest Florentines. It was called "Lampreda" and was a type of eel. The common people, not having the resources to afford it or even the delicious cuts of cattle, had to make do with consuming the waste products of the meat that was slaughtered. Many of these parts of the fifth quarter were boiled and then sold cheaply at the stalls along the banks of the Arno. Among the various offal, there was also lampredotto, which, due to its creases, resembled the mouth of the lamprey fish. The Florentines, notoriously gifted with great irony, therefore began to call this dish with the name of "lampredOTTO" (see note n°2), due to the assonance with the refined fish consumed by the nobility and the clergy.Another street food you often find in same stalls selling lampredotto is beef tongue, is put as lampredotto in a panino soaked in broth and gren sauce ("Salsa verde")did you ever try it?
Mostly actually authentic proposals. With the exception of the doner kebap, a pale imitation of the Turkish original and above all the ridiculous wine windows, as fake as a three euro coin, a mirror for tourists in search of banal exoticism.
It is lovely to see you guys embrace and appreciate our culture. We need more great people like you coming to Italy...

Yes, they supply glasses and usually there's a table to put them on when you are finished.
