    Hi Marlene. Good beginner video, and I am a beginner for sure, being an old time still photographer. One thing you should clarify to your users was your image stabilization settings. You had OIS enabled, perhaps even dual depending on your lens. The EIS is what you did not enable, which is generally not recommended, at least so I am told from my short research on Google. Do you use OIS for all your videos when tripod mounted? You don't need to, unless you expecting a train to roll past 🙂. Maybe you should do a video on just stabilization? I love my g9 just like you do yours. Happy shooting!

    • @ImageMaven
      @ImageMaven  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your questions, Brandon. I try avoid using any stabilization at all when I use a tripod, whether for stills or video. There really is no need for it. And in some cameras it can cause your photos to be out of focus. (This has happened to many of my students in the classroom when shooting night photos on tripods.) I usually use my G9 "off tripod" when I'm at the skatepark for shooting video or still photos. So I apologize if my stabilization settings confused anyone. Happy to hear you're loving your G9.

    • @ImageMaven
      @ImageMaven  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question. You need to stop down your lens (f/16), lower your ISO or use Neutral Density filter for outdoors if you want to maintain the slower shutter speed needed for video. Basically, you need to cut down the light in the other area(s) so that you can keep a slower shutter speed.

      Sorry Tracy, I was camping and just got back into cell service. Hopefully your interior shoot went well. I don’t do any real estate photography, so I’m sure your experience would be better than mine. My only tip would be to watch your white balance with mixed lighting situations as different colour temperatures of interior lights can really throw your colour and white balance off.

    Always like your videos, Marlene. One comment I would make about shooting videos in 4k, is that you can extract very good quality still images. I sometimes shoot portraits in 4k (sounds mad, I know), so that I can give the client a huge range of images from which to make their selection. Only disadvantage is that you can't use flash while doing this.

    • @ImageMaven
      @ImageMaven  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi David, That's a great idea. Thanks for sharing your technique. If you needed a larger file size, you could also shoot 20PM jpgs (if you're using a Lumix G9) at 20fps in high speed burst mode. That's still a lot of frames to choose from. Cheers, and stay healthy.

    Hi . Dear as always your videos are very good. I need your advice regarding cinematic videos setting. Also please let me know which which is the best lense for cinametic videos...

    • @ImageMaven
      @ImageMaven  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depending on where you are in the world, cinematic means different things. But you can start with shooting at 24fps and a shutter speed of 1/48s (closes being 1/50s). Lenses have more to do with the focal length and f/stop required. But my favourite is the 15mm f/1.7 for my Lumix cameras. This might be too wide for you though at 30mm equivalent focal length. I don't do a lot of cinematic video so I suggest you check out the work of some other TH-camrs on the topic. Thanks for your question. Cheers.

    Once again thanks for sharing your knowledge and skills. Panasonic lumix cameras really set high standards of performance. I think other manufacturers are lagging behind all the features of lumix e.g. flip out screens (Sony).

    • @ImageMaven
      @ImageMaven  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the flip out screen is a must for vloggers and others who do training videos where they are on camera. That was the most frustrating thing with my Canon 5DMk2 and is one of the reasons I switched to Lumix, 6 years ago! I still can't believe companies are making cameras without the flip around screen. Even my 10 year-old handy-cam has one.

You can also go into the menus via Menu/set button and tools (wrench icon with C). Find the Monitor/Display set of tools in there to turn things on or off. And to reset go into the tools-wrench menu (page 4/5) and find the reset menu. But keep mind it will reset everything. Thanks for stopping by. Hi Marlene. OMG, my birding photographs are coming out beautiful since you gave me advice on settings (aperture and ISO to get a good shutter speed). My videography? Not so good. As a matter of fact, bad. The only way I get any video in focus is dumb luck with no idea how it happened. My idea of preparing the settings for video is to ignore them and just push the red button and hope for the best. LOL. I will be checking out your link for video shutter speeds. Looking forward to learning something! I was ready to give up on my G9 and 100-400 Leica until your advice clicked, and even now I still am not using the full potential of the camera and have much to learn.

    • @ImageMaven
      @ImageMaven  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Video and photography have completely different shutter speed considerations, especially when it comes to bird photography. Of course it also depends on the light available to you on any given shooting day. Hang in there. It's early days. One thing you might do is just work with the G9 video for a couple of hours and play with all the focus mode settings. You might even need a "model" (kid, dog, willing friend) to work with you on this. That's what I usually do at the skatepark. And trust me, I have hours of crappy video to show for it. Cheers and thanks for following up. Keep going!

    Question : Why not have ' metering ' set to center weighted ? The camera will be on a tripod ( not moving ) & focused on yourself in the middle of the frame. Thanks

    • @ImageMaven
      @ImageMaven  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Ray, I feel that Centre weighted is the least useful metering method. (But I think you're talking about focus, right?) I'd have to always be in the middle of the frame and I typically try to be on one side (try to). There are so many ways to focus with this camera that it would depend on what situation you were in. Plus, with custom multi you can just tap the LCD on your subject or where you anticipate your subject will be, and it will follow your subject through the frame, or yourself as you walk backwards. Focussing is not my issue. Check out my next video on Shutter speed for video. th-cam.com/video/pLzbb4355SY/w-d-xo.html I used 'focus tracking' on those clips of me skateboarding. I think it did a great job. Thanks for your question!

    At 6:14 you show a shutter speed of 1/60. Since the rule of thumb is 2x the fps, I'm wondering what you like about the slower shutter. Thanks.

    • @ImageMaven
      @ImageMaven  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's common to use 2x, but many shutter speeds will work for video. I typically use the range of 1/60s to 1/250s, and sometimes even higher if I'm outside on a bright day. Since I'm working in low light here in the studio, (compared to outdoors) I chose 1/60s. Thanks for asking!

    • @oneeyedphotographer
      @oneeyedphotographer 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The purpose of the (relatively) long exposure is to allow some motion blur, softening moving subjects and reducing jitter. The ratio comes from film, where cameras need time to move the film between frames but having it motionless for the individual shots.
      If stuff isn't moving, the frame rate doesn't matter. For action, you might consider higher frame rates and faster shutter.

  • @HalfAHandyman
    @HalfAHandyman 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Could you do a video on picture profiles? I've noticed the AVCHD 1080 Standard profile on the G9 easily blows out the highlights in a high contrast scene. Now with the 2.0 firmware Ive been using the HLG profile and like it, but AVCHD has smaller files. I originally tried the Cine-D profile and it looked horrible. I'll think about it. Not really my area of expertise. For my in stuido videos I have total lighting control so I don't have too many problems with tonal range that I can't just fix with better lighting. I'm definitely not a video capture expert as I just make videos for my online courses and youtube. I don't do any paid video work at all. So I'm not really the best person to ask. Hi Marlene. As the owner of a new, and newly upgraded, G9 I've been watching and re-watching your videos. Many thanks for them, and for making my learning curve that much less steep! Could you advise me if there's any way to completely switch off the audio? I'm using an Atomos Ninja Flame external recorder AND a Tascam DR 100 Mk III sound recorder. I wish to only use the superior sound from the Tascam, feeding it into the Atomos without the G9 'imposing' its sound into the video recording. Many thanks and all the best.

    • @ImageMaven
      @ImageMaven  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would recommend keeping the audio "on" as a reference track, so that you can sync the sound tracks when editing. You use the waveforms to visually see the audio, but most good video editing software does this sync automatically. You can turn the camera captured track off (or delete it completely) once you're in the editing software. Otherwise you're going to have a heck of a time matching your good audio to your video. Most video editors work this way. You will never hear the camera recorded audio once it's edited. It's just for reference. You can also plug one of those recording devices into the mic input. That's what I do. But pro videographers usually plug their mics into a mixer or pre-amp to get better quality. I just don't have the expertise nor the budget.

    Thank you Marlene for your always very clear and easy to understand videos. When I set the dial on Ai, M, S, A or P I can still record video ... I don't quite understand why? It says in the manual to set it to [video camera]M but... as mentioned works in the other modes too. I set it on Ai and it filmed very nicely without having to adjust anything. I understand the S, A and M modes in [video camera]M but... what exactly is "P" (program). Well, too many questions:)

    • @ImageMaven
      @ImageMaven  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I typically use Creative Video mode M when I'm in the studio under controlled lighting conditions. But in the G9 you have a choice of P, A, S as well. I show that early on in the video. Sometimes when I am shooting outdoors, I choose S, and raise the Shutter speed to 1/250 second, if it's a bright day and I don't want to over-expose. You can also control depth of field (just like with photos) by choosing A. But you have to remember that the shutter speed (in general) should be in the range of 1/50 to 1/500s for video. So keep an eye on your settings no matter what mode you use. In Creative Video mode (used in this demo), you can use the regular shutter button to start and stop the video recording. If you want to shoot jpgs in iA mode, you can shoot video in iA mode too, by pushing the red video button. This puts you in automatic video mode. And it's just like using your cell phone.
      Anyhow it's a big topic, and I'll be covering more about G9 video again soon. The best thing you can do is start taking some test clips and see what happens.

    Thanks Marlene for your videos! I am a G9 owner and sometimes here in EU I have difficulty with flickering, I need to choose shutter speed 100 or 50. Also there is flickering with high speed video. Maybe you can warn your viewers in the next video. Also can you talk about the resolution output on the full size HDMI while recording video and while playing back photo/video. Thank you!

    • @ImageMaven
      @ImageMaven  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Andras, Thanks for your comments. Flickering is usually caused by LED or fluorescent lighting. Any lights that have cycles of "off and on". These are often not visible to the eye. I've even had flickering cause major colour temperature changes in large trade show spaces, and sports arenas using sodium vapour (and other mystery) lighting. Literally went from red shadows to green shadows from one frame to the next when shooting still photos at higher shutter speeds. That's a big WB mess! Flickering when using high speed video is going to likely happen when you shoot with lights that flicker. Shouldn't happen in the sunshine or with good ole steady output tungsten lights. Slower shutter speeds usually mask the flickering lights problem. 1/50s 1/100s, as you mentioned. For those in North America it's 1/60s and 1/125s. I can't remember if I mentioned this in my video on HS recording. I will have a look at that one again.
      There is also flicker associated with using a high shutter speed. But that's a different problem which gives a jittery choppy looking playback. It's hard to watch if it's a long clip. Motion video works best with slower shutter speeds that slightly blur one frame to the next. If you're shooting outdoors on a bright day, you may need a ND filter to be able to use slower shutter speeds. But I expect you already know this!
      Not really sure I understand your question about HDMI. Do you mean on a small HDMI monitor, or on a larger TV?

      @andrasvarga-fekete4398 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To avoid flicker you need to set the correct shutter speed or shutter angle (I don't think G9 supports shutter angle). Use the link below to set up the correct values to avoid flicker. I don't own a G9 (yet) but own a GH5s and the below have helped.
      And shutter speed needs to be twice your fps for cinematic footage, this caveat needs to be taken into consideration while selecting values.

    • @ImageMaven
      @ImageMaven  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Mike, Up to you about the C-Modes, but you need to keep in mind that your exposure will/may change every time you shoot. But once you set up the video settings, (such as MP4, 1920x1080, etc.) you don't have to go back in there and change anything. Just pop it onto the Creative Video Mode and it will keep all the video settings you previously set up in the menus. All that leaves is WB, ISO and f/stop and shutter speed to set up. And that's going to change depending on the day/amount of light. In my studio, things don't change much each time I shoot. But at the skatepark, I make those exposure (ISO, f/stop, shutter) and WB decisions during the shoot.
      I'd use the C-Modes if I was shooting both stills and video at the same location and time, and I wanted to flip back and forth between the two quickly (as long as the light doesn't change too much during the shoot) you shouldn't have a problem. If it does change significantly, then you'll need to re-save the C-settings or you'll get the problem described by others when using them. I see the C-settings as a custom adjustment for a specific time/location. Not something I set and forget. If you don't want to think too much about video exposure, then you could use Shutter priority in the Creative Video mode (In my demo I used Manual), put it on 1/125 second (or some where between 1/60 and 1/500s), ISO at 200 for outdoors sunny day, and let the f/stop fall where it may. Just keep an eye on your exposure that you aren't over or under exposing. A 3-second test clip will show you that. Sorry to be so long winded. Hope that helps!

But as my aperture closes down, I come to a point where presumably it's already hit the max ISO and I can see the image in the lcd getting darker. But the exposure meter still stays at 0. I am expecting the exposure meter to read some negative value as the scene is darker now. What am I doing wrong?

      You can shoot to North American TV standards, but not those of (most of) Southern America, Africa,, Europe, Asia (Except Japan and maybe South Korea), Oceana. I think Americans are short-changed and should complain.

      @@oneeyedphotographer Good to know this. Thank you. I'll let the Americans do that complaining. ;)

    This G9 camera has some negative points, for example, the recording limit of only 30 minutes, which is very bad when I am filming with it at a long-term event, for example, an interview or a wedding. And if I need to record a video for more than 30 minutes, the camera will turn off, and I will miss important moments and images. And the camera also heats up a lot when recording in 4K. The camera is excellent for photography, but for working with videos with long events and long interviews, it is very bad because of the recording time limit of 10 to 30 minutes.
