I drive an '87 760 Turbo every day, wonderful car. Similar covid story getting mine running from a barn find. A friend had the exact same 740 as yours, he was the original owner and took delivery at the Gothenburg factory. He even got to see his car being built!
This reminds me of trips my friend and I have done to Romania in an Old Ford Mondeo TD that was supposed to be scrapped we ended up doing that trip twice and going around Ireland twice in it to raise money for the RLNI real good times
This seems like a great adventure. Reminds me very much of Harry’s Garage trip in his Rolls Royce Silver Shadow up to see the Northern Lights in the Artic Circle. Great fun .

This is just magnificent, Chris!!! I didn't know the destination for the Volvo road trip, but how appropriate! I love European cars (which includes UK) of the 1980s, with the angles, etc. I regret not buying one in the past as these are the Volvo to buy in terms of repairability, durability, reliability. And it is my favorite Volvo design apart from the P1800, which I like in a different way. I need to go back and rewatch the tales of this car and how it got to this point. Related, I was reading an article why Scanavians are generally very happy people, and it was attributed to knowing a sense of satiation or "enough". This car hit the nail on the head by being excellent in all sorts of ways, but Volvo sensibly made the car extremely stylish yet dignified and not "OY! LOOK AT ME!" This car just emits an aura of diplomat or executive. LOVE THE Volvo 740!!!!!!
In the summer of 1988 my family took a small trip in our new Volvo 745 GLE from Sweden to Yugoslavia (Croatia now). That was some journey. No GPS in those days 😅
Those motorways are interesting in Belgium they kind of follow the contour of the land and when we went to Holland you kind of bounced along in Belgium. But they do have good chips and mayonnaise 😂 ps we did the journey when my dad had his Renault safrane 2.5 auto with the 170hp Volvo 5 cylinder engine . It was a fantastic car like an armchair on wheels
To give you an idea, you have passed through multiple countries and in the second day driven 700+ klms. Sydney to Melbourne in Australia is 877 klms. Two of our closest cities, haven’t left the country but crossed one state border. Sydney to Perth is 3933 klms and still haven’t left the country. Hehe These sorts of trips are always fun with a mate. Love the banter. 😂
I love the Volvo 740 and 940. Still looking for a good one. They are somewhat rare here. Looks like the Euro versions have much nicer upholstery than the US versions.
Did this exact trip in 2001 in a 2 year old Astra so no worries about breaking down but was an absolute Head Turner in Sweden because it was a Vauxhall not Opel and was Right Hand drive. Looking forward to seeing the bridge and tunnel crossing from Denmark.
@Dave K They are the same vehicle. They are sold in other right-hand drive markets such as Ireland or Cyprus as the Opel that they are. Vauxhall hasn't designed a vehicle independently of Opel since the original Viva. Vauxhall is just a marketing division of Opel vehicles for the UK market My mother's family owns several Opel dealerships throughout Bavaria and where do Vauxall vehicles in need of parts service or repair go if issues arise? Opel dealerships because Vauxhall doesn't export and since Vauxhall is just a production variation of the equivalent Opel they can easily be serviced or repaired.
@@williamegler8771 Thank you William for confirming that you're also knowledgable on the Opel-Vauxhall links! ;) I was of course referring to Vauxhall's branding and the feeling of driving a RHD Vauxhall on the continent, which does get interest from foreigners. You would only really get this if you lived here and drove a Vauxhall and have to leave 'Blighty' by ferry/eurotunnel to go abroad. It's a more fun than having the Shengen and crossing an invisible border line when leaving Germany to enter a neighbouring country! Obviously it's a shame that the Vauxhall brand became a marketing division of Opel - and a bigger shame that GM gave up both brands to Stellantis and killed off Holden in Australia, which also had Vauxhall/Opel links. The last designed Vauxhall was the 1972 FE Victor. The Cavalier Mark 1 had a different front end to the Opel Ascona, designed by Wayne Cherry that looked similar to the first generation Opel Manta. Opels were sold at separate dealerships in the UK to Vauxhall until GM integrated them in the mid-1980s and at that point you could buy a Vauxhall Carlton or an Opel Senator (same car) from the same showroom - then Opel left the UK market completely because Vauxhall was just a stronger brand here. Opels until the mid-1980s were much higher quality cars though than Vauxhalls - the Monza being an example of this. But it seems GM lost their way by cost cutting the build quality of Vauxhall/Opel.
Great adventure roadtrip and what an awesome car to do it in! Old Skool is just as good, if not better than newer modern cars. Definitely more fun anyway! Europe is so much better than UK for driving, excellent open roads and minimal roadworks, just watch for those work sites😂! Cracking Volvo, looking forward to seeing the next part! 👌

This is really very interesting Matt. I'm the Brit Canadian in Canterbury that's met you and Hubnut at the NEC on two occasions and I've also met you at Oh So Retro in Margate as well as the Bromley Pageant. This video holds a very special interest for me, as I've done three driving holidays in Sweden way back in the early 1980's, for one month each time. Was in a Renault 5GTL each time, with my Mum. Back then there were DFDS sailings from either Harwich or Felixstowe to Goteborg and the crossing took 24 hour across the North Sea. Alas, those sailings are long gone and you now have to do the journey pretty much the way you show in this video. I'm really glad you've made this video as I'm using it as a learning tool to hopefully plan another trip to Sweden all these decades later. Will be very interesting to see how Sweden has changed since the early 1980's and I'm sure I will have many moments of "Hey, I remember being here". Glad to see you had no waits at Dover Docks. Incidentally I used to work for one of the other major ferry companies based in Dover, in their IT Dept and had to sail onboard the vessels to support their various point of sale systems That was from 1986-88. After that I worked in Germany for five years. So these are all further reasons why your video holds a very special interest for me. I actually got hooked on your channel after watching you do a review of a very lovely blue Volvo 240 estate. And now I just had the though that would have also been a great and highly appropriate car for this trip. Now you just need to make a second Swedish trip in a Saan to visit the Saab Museum in Trollhatten! Anyhow, hugely looking forward to Part 2...and would be very interested to chat with you about this trip next time I see you at a car show. We were lucky at the docks, the last couple of times have been long delays at passport control, so nice to fly through this time. Sweden is still clean and friendly, definitely a great place to visit, or to live
I think there maybe still a sailing from Hull to Góteborg and Rostock (Germany). Few cars mainly trailers and trucks. Could all be just containers now and no ferry as a good few years since I last used it. (1990's or late 80's).

Used to have a 740GLT est ( 2.3 four cylinder ), back in the early 90's , and went to Germany many times , and yes once you got to 80- 90+mph , you could virtually see the fuel gauge drop in front of your eyes.
I have a 1988 745 with the n/a 16V, its consumption in L/100km is basically your speed divided by 10. So 10 at 100, 13 at 130, and so on. The 940 is noticeably easier on petrol, despite the difference in Cd being quite small.
First took my 940;estate to Sweden in 93. Took my new 855 2.5 Estate there from 94-02. Still have the car. Took the DFDS Ferry from Gateshead to Goteborg. Toured all around Sweden staying in holiday homes. Twice took another ferry to Gotland. Purchased many Volvo parts there and even with their 25 per cent V.A.T. a set of Volvo alloys with fitted Pirelli’s were roughly a third of the price of that in R.I.P. off U.K.. 👍🏻
Did the road trip from Oslo to Kristiansand to catch the ferry and once to Esbjerg then to Goteborg via Frederikhavn, and back from Sweden to Denmark then returning through Jutland to Hamburg and Harwich. Having a new radiator fitted next week after nearly 29 years. My 740 2.3 estate had carburettors and felt much punchier than the 940 injection with a lovely engine/exhaust roar. The steering was floaty but the interior was vast. The great thing about these true estate cars was that their box-like rear made them ideal unlike German and modern estates ( sadly a dying breed due to awful S.U.V.’s) which had/ have impractical sloping tailgates designed for autobahn top speeds. Being old body- weld designs the 240/740/940 are prone to rusting. Styled of course like all post-war Volvos for the American market. There are amusing adverts on Volvos on TH-cam focused on that market!. 👍🏻 Looking forward to your further instalments.
I'm preparing a trip to Austria with a friend, so this video added to the preparation fun. You two provide very funny commentary! I once did 160 kph in my Xantia on the Autobahn but the noise was above conversation levels. 130 kph was a nice cruising speed. At that point the Xantia already makes quite a lot rpm. And also funny to see what people find striking about my country (NL).

Absolutely love the road trip guys. Big thumps up from me. However coming from Australia I find it quite amusing that you guys find 8-9 hours driving to be really long. Us Aussies regularly do 12-14 hours of driving especially if your a lorry driver. I have driven from cairns in northern Australia to Sydney in southern NSW. 1500 miles in 22 hours total driving time over 2 days.
Hi from Sydney, Australia. 140,000 miles. 35 yrs old, almost a new car !! In a couple of months i have been driving the favorite of my "fleet" of classic cars for 41 years, this year was its 49th birthday, plus it has 704, 000 kilometres or 445,000 miles on it. I bought it September 1982 then it had 102,700 kilometres on it. Used mostly as my daily drive for all these years, it has worked flawlessly. Powered by one of mankind's biggest ever car engines, the mighty jumbo block Cadillac 8.2 litre V8, as an export specification engine this is a "full power" engine with zero power sapping anti pollution gear bar a charcoal cannister to arrest fuel vapor from the fuel tank. Being a rare Right Hand Drive version I knew I would not be finding such a lovely one owner mint car again, so I have looked after it carefully. It regularly does long distances in this huge country, this is precisely what it was meant for and is capable of and in absolute comfort, you do not even need sunglasses as it has UV proof deep green laminated glass in all windows, made by the same glass company that makes Ray-ban sunglasses. The Maybach 62 of yesteryear& same size too. A huge 1974 Cadillac Fleetwood Talisman the most expensive, TOTALLY optioned vehicle, basically the only 2 things you needed to choose was color and sunroof or no sunroof and I thank its first owner for NO sunroof as I hate them. this was the most elaborate car from near any manufacturer in '74 with equipment not fitted to other cars for some decades to come. So standard from factory GM's invention of SRS Airbags patented as the "Air Cushion Restraint System" in steering wheel, passenger side & dash top. GM's patented Trackmaster stability system encompassing electric controlled ABS Brakes, active self levelling anti-dive suspension, and traction control all linked together to work as a cohesive system. Throne-like comfortable ergonomic seats from Sealy Posturepedic Bedding company this is a car well ahead of its time, there are so many more features than this, but these really define the integrity of quality in this car most of these were not available from any other company, Period & would not for years to come. Even now in 2023 making this a safe car to travel in. At 6 metres long, 2 metres wide and weighing 3180kilos this was one of the biggest most luxurious elaborate classic cars ever made and in Sable Black paint, with an Italian tan interior, classy as well, very dignified. Majestic, Safe and Reliable what's not to love and with almost 500 horsepower.

Two German words you'll quickly learn enroute on the Autobahn: "Stau" (traffic jam) and "Baustelle" (roadworks). Especially the roadworks around Hamburg seem to have no end, and there is virtually no alternative if you want to go to Scandinavia by road.
"They don't build them like that anymore...." That saying is never more true to describe the Volvo vehicle brand of yesteryears. These vehicles have long proven themselves....Me myself still enjoys my old Volvo. Volvo 4 Life
I did a very similar journey a few years back on a 125cc motorcycle but I went to Galdhøpiggen in Norway before crossing back into Sweden. I wanted to get into the Arctic circle but ran out of time unfortunately, I will go back and try again one day.
Try the journey again in a Volvo 760 Turbo Diesel, if you can find one, you won't be fuelling it up so much, and you get more than 21 mpg, as well as a slightly swifter pace of progress.
On the UK issue- You can't show GB on the continent as the UN no longer recognise it (as it includes NI) so if you have GB/EURO plates your not suppose to show those in the EU anymore but you just cover them and make sure your car has a black/white UK marker

Murhpy's law. I came back from a 1700km trip yesterday (that's one way), and the timing belt went. In the past i usually had a spare one, this time not. And at 2 years old it didn't seem old enough, until, while taking it all apart, i remembered that it did almost 100K km. All was well, it's just that the vacation got a bit spoiled by the 5 day waiting time for the belt, had to use car sharing to get around.
My dad had a 1986 Volvo 740gle I have many fond memories of it as an eight year old I had the choice between a Saab 900 and the volvo. I chose the Volvo.
All Volvos since the 240 are actually designed to be able to hit the broadside of a 2 ton Moose and not have the main pillars break so you'd be fine if one of those branches hit your windshield :D
2:13 the road works in this area are seemly constant. The surface has been awful for far too long. Added to the amount of traffic on the Antwerpen Ring it can make for a very frustrating journey. It is great that the Highways are lit, it makes a world of difference.

I remember booking Premium Lounge to Ireland. Suffice to say that I was too busy wretching to take advantage. I did this exact trip to Goteborg in my Volvo Amazon a few years ago. Didn't miss a beat and the locals were strangely not that interested in it as an example of their automotive history.

Nothing like a good road trip Matt. I really enjoyed it when I drive to Belgium last year to my cars place of origin. I used the Eurotunnel but you taking the ferry reminds me of the 90's when the Sea Cat used to sail from Dover and Folkstone (as well as the hovercraft from Dover). Ready for part two having to five to make a fresh cup of tea. ☕🤤
So. E556HPK is a 2.0 with (apparently) 120 hp. Whether all of those horses are still contained within.... Anyway top speed for this car/engine was supposedly 112mph. So, it should be (and obvs is) happy at 80 - 90 or so. Bet you wish it had cruise control.😂 GLE spec on... but retro-fittable 😊 Great video, great car. Can't wait for pt.2

It was a production variation of an Opel Astra rebadged as a Vauxhall for the UK market.

We were lucky at the docks, the last couple of times have been long delays at passport control, so nice to fly through this time.

I think there maybe still a sailing from Hull to Góteborg and Rostock (Germany). Few cars mainly trailers and trucks. Could all be just containers now and no ferry as a good few years since I last used it. (1990's or late 80's).

Used to have a 740GLT est ( 2.3 four cylinder ), back in the early 90's , and went to Germany many times , and yes once you got to 80- 90+mph , you could virtually see the fuel gauge drop in front of your eyes.
I have a 1988 745 with the n/a 16V, its consumption in L/100km is basically your speed divided by 10.
So 10 at 100, 13 at 130, and so on. The 940 is noticeably easier on petrol, despite the difference in Cd being quite small.
First took my 940;estate to Sweden in 93. Took my new 855 2.5 Estate there from 94-02. Still have the car. Took the DFDS Ferry from Gateshead to Goteborg. Toured all around Sweden staying in holiday homes. Twice took another ferry to Gotland. Purchased many Volvo parts there and even with their 25 per cent V.A.T. a set of Volvo alloys with fitted Pirelli’s were roughly a third of the price of that in R.I.P. off U.K.. 👍🏻
Did the road trip from Oslo to Kristiansand to catch the ferry and once to Esbjerg then to Goteborg via Frederikhavn, and back from Sweden to Denmark then returning through Jutland to Hamburg and Harwich. Having a new radiator fitted next week after nearly 29 years. My 740 2.3 estate had carburettors and felt much punchier than the 940 injection with a lovely engine/exhaust roar. The steering was floaty but the interior was vast. The great thing about these true estate cars was that their box-like rear made them ideal unlike German and modern estates ( sadly a dying breed due to awful S.U.V.’s) which had/ have impractical sloping tailgates designed for autobahn top speeds. Being old body- weld designs the 240/740/940 are prone to rusting. Styled of course like all post-war Volvos for the American market. There are amusing adverts on Volvos on TH-cam focused on that market!. 👍🏻 Looking forward to your further instalments.

I once did 160 kph in my Xantia on the Autobahn but the noise was above conversation levels. 130 kph was a nice cruising speed. At that point the Xantia already makes quite a lot rpm.
And also funny to see what people find striking about my country (NL).

I really miss driving on the continent back in the 90s the dodge was turn up Dover P&O get a £10 cheap day return and when asked what time you were returning say 23.00 hrs but forget to say that would be in three months time

Absolutely love the road trip guys. Big thumps up from me. However coming from Australia I find it quite amusing that you guys find 8-9 hours driving to be really long. Us Aussies regularly do 12-14 hours of driving especially if your a lorry driver. I have driven from cairns in northern Australia to Sydney in southern NSW. 1500 miles in 22 hours total driving time over 2 days.
Euro truckers arnt even allowed to do that, they'd be locked up if they tried!

Hi from Sydney, Australia. 140,000 miles. 35 yrs old, almost a new car !! In a couple of months i have been driving the favorite of my "fleet" of classic cars for 41 years, this year was its 49th birthday, plus it has 704, 000 kilometres or 445,000 miles on it. I bought it September 1982 then it had 102,700 kilometres on it. Used mostly as my daily drive for all these years, it has worked flawlessly. Powered by one of mankind's biggest ever car engines, the mighty jumbo block Cadillac 8.2 litre V8, as an export specification engine this is a "full power" engine with zero power sapping anti pollution gear bar a charcoal cannister to arrest fuel vapor from the fuel tank. Being a rare Right Hand Drive version I knew I would not be finding such a lovely one owner mint car again, so I have looked after it carefully. It regularly does long distances in this huge country, this is precisely what it was meant for and is capable of and in absolute comfort, you do not even need sunglasses as it has UV proof deep green laminated glass in all windows, made by the same glass company that makes Ray-ban sunglasses. The Maybach 62 of yesteryear& same size too.
A huge 1974 Cadillac Fleetwood Talisman the most expensive, TOTALLY optioned vehicle, basically the only 2 things you needed to choose was color and sunroof or no sunroof and I thank its first owner for NO sunroof as I hate them. this was the most elaborate car from near any manufacturer in '74 with equipment not fitted to other cars for some decades to come. So standard from factory GM's invention of SRS Airbags patented as the "Air Cushion Restraint System" in steering wheel, passenger side & dash top. GM's patented Trackmaster stability system encompassing electric controlled ABS Brakes, active self levelling anti-dive suspension, and traction control all linked together to work as a cohesive system. Throne-like comfortable ergonomic seats from Sealy Posturepedic Bedding company this is a car well ahead of its time, there are so many more features than this, but these really define the integrity of quality in this car most of these were not available from any other company, Period & would not for years to come. Even now in 2023 making this a safe car to travel in. At 6 metres long, 2 metres wide and weighing 3180kilos this was one of the biggest most luxurious elaborate classic cars ever made and in Sable Black paint, with an Italian tan interior, classy as well, very dignified. Majestic, Safe and Reliable what's not to love and with almost 500 horsepower.

Two German words you'll quickly learn enroute on the Autobahn: "Stau" (traffic jam) and "Baustelle" (roadworks). Especially the roadworks around Hamburg seem to have no end, and there is virtually no alternative if you want to go to Scandinavia by road.

I did a very similar journey a few years back on a 125cc motorcycle but I went to Galdhøpiggen in Norway before crossing back into Sweden. I wanted to get into the Arctic circle but ran out of time unfortunately, I will go back and try again one day.
Try the journey again in a Volvo 760 Turbo Diesel, if you can find one, you won't be fuelling it up so much, and you get more than 21 mpg, as well as a slightly swifter pace of progress.
On the UK issue- You can't show GB on the continent as the UN no longer recognise it (as it includes NI) so if you have GB/EURO plates your not suppose to show those in the EU anymore but you just cover them and make sure your car has a black/white UK marker

Murhpy's law. I came back from a 1700km trip yesterday (that's one way), and the timing belt went. In the past i usually had a spare one, this time not. And at 2 years old it didn't seem old enough, until, while taking it all apart, i remembered that it did almost 100K km.
All was well, it's just that the vacation got a bit spoiled by the 5 day waiting time for the belt, had to use car sharing to get around.
That 940 you spotted, a green Celebration or Classic model, is identical to ours, which we've owned from new.

My dad had a 1986 Volvo 740gle I have many fond memories of it as an eight year old I had the choice between a Saab 900 and the volvo. I chose the Volvo.

All Volvos since the 240 are actually designed to be able to hit the broadside of a 2 ton Moose and not have the main pillars break so you'd be fine if one of those branches hit your windshield :D

2:13 the road works in this area are seemly constant. The surface has been awful for far too long. Added to the amount of traffic on the Antwerpen Ring it can make for a very frustrating journey. It is great that the Highways are lit, it makes a world of difference.
Hint: take the Fährschiff Glückstadt / Wischhafen ferry to avoid Hamburg

I remember booking Premium Lounge to Ireland. Suffice to say that I was too busy wretching to take advantage. I did this exact trip to Goteborg in my Volvo Amazon a few years ago. Didn't miss a beat and the locals were strangely not that interested in it as an example of their automotive history.
Would love to make a trip the other way around, to visit Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust with my X306.

Anyway top speed for this car/engine was supposedly 112mph. So, it should be (and obvs is) happy at 80 - 90 or so. Bet you wish it had cruise control.😂 GLE spec on... but retro-fittable 😊
