      Because Zelenka was a Catholic, and not a Protestant like Bach. Unfortunately, during the 16th-18th centuries, countries of the Western Europe did their worst to fight Catholic authors in the fields of science, music and literature, but couldn't do much in the field of visual arts.

      Zelenka composed rich music, full of meaning and challenges to the listener and performer.
      Who wants challenges? Only a few.
      Mr. Zelenka lacked one thing that Bach had - Students. Bach was a composer and a teacher. He left a huge body of compositions for students and taught generations of musicians after him.
      Mr. Zelenka composed for professionals and for God. Bach composed for God too.

    That is one electrically charged performance and everyone is outstanding. I put it on to see what it was like and I'm writing this an hour and eight minutes later. It's a revelation to me -the first time that Zelenka has sounded as brilliant to me in a choral work as he is in his instrumental output. I'll look for this on cd now. I hope I can find a performance nearly as good.

    We don't want to, but we feel a kind of pressure to compare Zelenka's music to the greatest baroque composer, J.S. Bach's music. Two different universes, but you feel like taking the two into account at the same time. There is one thing I dare say without doubts praising the Czech master- and I am a very great admirer of J.S. Bach's whole oeuvre, one of the biggest Bach fans - Zelenka is more hearty, more straightforward and more moving, more emotional, more enthusiasticlly and exuberantly cordial than his German contemporary. And the world should learn by now that there was another giant next to the German one, and it was Jan Dismas Zelenka.

    • @andrzejnowak7
      @andrzejnowak7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed, but it is indeed difficult to find among the composers of the late Baroque one that did not have the characteristics you mentioned. This, by the way, was noted by both Haydn and Beethoven. Betowen's words comparing Bach to the sea are very often quoted. But the ones that immediately follow this comparison are omitted. Beethoven concludes that the greatest composer of all time is Handel, because he can achieve the same goals as Bach with simpler and more directly appealing means.

    Hana Blazikova in brilliant accurate voice; all voices excellent in this wonderful ensemble. This first introduced me to Collegium 1704 several years ago, and I return often to this crisp resonant recording. Vaclav Luks elicits and conveys exuberant joy in all he does - an attractive leader, with a loyal genuinely appreciative corps of musicians.

    I am a profound admirer of the Baroque, but when I listen to this masterpiece over and over again I do not tire of admiring its depth and special way of expressing that special imagination of Zelenka, a composer hidden in greatness and admired by J.S. I've been huge fan of Bach for nearly 50 years, but never heard of this composer until yesterday. I found out because someone said "Bach was a copycat of Zelenka" in a comment section of Bach's Mass.
    I'm glad I saw that comment, otherwise I would never do my research. This is a great surprise, a pleasant one, however, I can hear quite an opposite fact here. A part of Benedictus is almost an exact copy of air on g string written a decade earlier. While I'm exited to know more of the composer's work, this is a bit of disappointment since I can't enjoy that section with pure mind. I mean, that air by Bach has been very popular already, so if anyone copies it, everyone will notice it right away. And obviously, you can't do better job than J.S.Bach doing the same thing. Being influenced by St. John Passion was OK, but this is too obvious.
    Zelenka has his own characteristics which are not in Bach's music. He does better in different area.
    So why he copied Bach's air is a mystery to me. I have no complain to the composer otherwise.

    • @notoriusmaximus783
      @notoriusmaximus783 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That's ridiculous. First, composers inspired each other. Bach himself wrote several transcriptions and used many musical themes by other composers. Second, many musical themes were composed independently, just because they are simple enough. Descending diatonic sequence with octave alternations is one of the simplest. In the days of Bach and Zelenka, when there was no radio broadcast and no sound recordings, chances that someone could hear some melody "somewhere" and reuse it were quite low. Most likely, Zelenka composed his theme without knowing Air in G.

      @@ttwiligh7 There are more pieces inspired by Air in G. And there are pieces similar to it - apart from this Zelenka's, e.g. Händel's Organ Concerto op. 7, nr. 5, 2nd movement. But you could find more examples for sure. The fact it was composed later doesn't mean that the author was necessarily aware of a previous version. If you checked baroque opera arias you would find many similarities between them - and their composers were aware of each other for sure. But it wasn't considered a plagiarism - e. g. N. Porpora's "Si pietoso il tuo labbro" vs. R. Broschi's "Chi non sente" vs. J. A. Hasse's "Notte amica". And you would maybe notice similarities with these pieces and with Air in G as well if you compared with A. Scarlatti's "Dormi o fulmine di guerra" (composed in 1697).
      There were plenty of composers and plenty of melodies composed independently, and plenty of inspirations by others, of course. I think it's impossible to mark any of them as being the original author of some musical idea. Especially if most of these composers and their music are almost forgotten today. It would be like saying that some band plagiarised The House of Rising Sun by The Animals - of course not, as they were not the original authors of that musical theme, just the most famous.
      I think the same is true for Zelenka's Miserere vs. Bach's John's Passion - I'm in doubts Zelenka ever heard this Bach's piece or saw its score. Both are dramatic themes set in minor key for vocals, however, their harmonic progressions are different, both use 4/4 time, but Zelenka's piece is syncopated, evoking a heartbeat. Again, there are many pieces written during this period with similar feeling. But it doesn't mean one was inspired by some another. Otherwise one could say that both, Bach and Zelenka were inspired by Pachelbel's Prelude in c-minor for organ. But I don't think this is the case. One could find some similarities even with Dies Irae from Requiem in E-flat major by J. A. Hasse. Maybe, you are focused on Bach's music too much. Then, you hear Bach in every piece of music. As well as Mozart's fan hear Mozart everywhere.

      @@notoriusmaximus783 You surely know lots more than I do. I didn't even know most of the pieces you mentioned. Thanks for enlightening me. I admit I'm focusing too much on Bach's music.
      And yes, I often hear Handel in Bach's piece, or other way around, the fairly similar musical ideas, where convergent evolution is quite possible as well as influencing each other.

    Bach might not have only admired his colleague but might have enjoyed his music. But unfortunately he could not have read Zelenka's latest masterpieces. What a pity. They might have inspired him to write another B minor.
    Zelenka's last works do approach the German giant's high poetic quality and sometimes, I daresay, they even almost surpass it.
    Formidable music with formidable performers.
