For instance we know by some manuscripts that have been found that Malibran performed a transposed down of La sonnambula (basically in a purely mezzosoprano key). Grisi sang A LOT and she surely sang the parts that you mentioned in a higher soprano key. Judging by the roles written for her (besides this one, Elvira in Puritani and Norina in Don Pasquale) she was what in Italy we would call a “lirico d’agilità” that is a lyric soprano with great agility. Freni is here a great fit.

I had been accustomed to voices of teenage years like mine, and records at the library which mostly had Sills, Price, Caballe, Tebaldi, and even Milanov... and of course Callas and Cerquetti, so when I first heard this I was stunned at the sonorousness, the smouldering warmth, the mmmmm mmmmm good deep sound, and I had loved Freni as much as any singer during her final years in America as a prima donna. But, I had never heard such voices.
I find this a very beautiful interpretation of an aria that is beloved by many opera fans, bringing fresh tones and a bright acoustic in a glorious blending of two gorgeous voices that seem to be matched for youth and vocal dynamics: Brave!

Sutherland-Horn, la Freni è molto plausibile, come colore, come Adalgisa e la Scotto, come Norma, non ha mai sbagliato. I due ruoli sono stati scritti per due soprano, quindi, soprattutto per Mirella Freni, non è troppo basso. Il duetto è fatto molto bene. Here we hear the duet as it was written by Bellini for two sopranos not a soprano and a mezzo like its better known. The first who sang this duet were Giudita Pasta and Guillia Grisi two sopranos.Later Grisi also played the role of Norma like Monserrat Caballé who played both roles too. So a perfect Norma recording would have been with Callas and Caballé. ]
The real pairing for this in some operatic Eden would have been Callas as Norma and Sills as Adalgisa; Sills' silvery tone and dramatic sense of text and character would have matched Callas' perfectly. Also it would directly reflect the original Adalgisa who later sang Norma as Sills did later in her career. I h eard Sills in a concert performance of Norma with Verrett as Adalgisa and it is one of the most memorable experiences in 50 years of operatic listening because of the combination of musicality and dramatic sensitivity that they both brought even to a concert performance.
OH MY! What a wonderfully sung duet. It clearly makes sense to hv two sopranos singing this duet. Though Tryonas was a great mezzo and match Sutherland note for note, and certainly her diction was excellent. How wonderful to hv these varieties joining together in this spectacular duet. TY
They sound quite good together, and I just love the fact that both roles are sung by sopranos (plus Freni is the lighter one, so the whole "young girl" thing is more believable) :)!
It would have been interesting to hear Freni as Norma and Scotto as Adalgisa. After all, Scotto's voice, by 1978, had acquired that delicious warmth and darkness, so she would have made a good Adalgisa. I have recordings of her Normas from 1974, 1978, and 1981 and she has certainly proven herself to be an excellent Norma.

I can never get the stunning performance Mira Norma by Dame Joan Sutherland and Marilyn Horne and as far as I am concerned It will never be surpassed. Who cares if its in a higher or lower pitch, or it is sang as what's his name meant it to be. Dame Joan and Marilyn took this piece of music and sang it in a manner that set my heart thumping. Higher, lower blah blah. Don't knock others attemps at this beautiful piece of music. Anyone who has the guts to perform is are magnificent.

Freni was not good for bel canto. Yes, she sang Puritani in her early years, but it was never her forte.
Totally agree Freni, Tebaldi and Price were all wonderful singer but not suited for bel canto.
