    Love the Idea Matt but coming from a guy who has built cages in drift cars, Hot Rods and rock crawlers, your missing two things. First you need triangulation added all through out that cage or it will fold like a card board box, and you need bigger stronger anchor points with more mass on the fram grabbed. Just a recommendation Otherwise it is looking good. Also some bigger stronger pipe might be needed for the weight of the five ton. I have watched a jeep crawler mangle 2 inch and still get body damage. I can only imagine the weight of the 5 ton. Good luck and love the shows man. Keep doing what you are doing. GOD BLESS!!

    Your making the cage beefy yes, but the cage is only as good as the mounting points to the frame. any energy that hits it will have to go through the mounting points and usually at a way higher stress due to moments imposed upon. sch 40 OD tube is strong but if your vehicle tried to stop on just the cage it would bend and or snap those right off. sections of half inch plate going to the frame perpendicular to impact direction would do considerably better. also remember to grease the joints our do something with smaller tolerance or your going to get rust runs from the pipe. just food for thought from a mechanical engineer.

    There needs to be three things done or this is just for show. You need better anchors to the frame bara rolled out the side of the frame will not support the weight. You need bars vertical inside behind driver and passenger seats that go from straight up to the main hoop whether it be inside or through the roof that plane will not support that weight. Also you need cross bracing everything at 90* does not make good for rolling it will rack and fold on a diagonal. You need triangulation gussets something. Also you will need to make hella beefy stops for that grill in the down and folded forward position. If it hits something hard it will pivot and smash against the hood

  • @Seelenschmiede
    @Seelenschmiede 3 ปีที่แล้ว +144

    The front hinges will most likely ripp off clean after a few openings. They are way undersized and the anchoring is way to weak. Change it now or cry later. The need to be waaaay beefier and need a way bigger basis for achoring. I guesstimate the weight of the front cage alone around 300+ kg. All stressing at one point. Or mount anchoring points for heavy chains to stop the thing from traveling to far so they catch the most of the weight. The chains would have to stop it just right before the front bars hit the bumper.

    Most people have already talked about it, but the cage definitely should have triangulation worked into for structural strength. If you look at the photos of your old Ultra4 chassis, you'll see a lot of triangles. Triangles are the strongest shape to build with and the rigidity and, most importantly, safety will go up a ton. Squares will only get so you far. I would have also build the cage out of either DOM steel round tube or chromoly round tube. Chromoly is more for race vehicles, while DOM is what most rock sliders and bumpers are made out of, but you could 100% use DOM for a cage. I know this cage is going to be just a show piece, but if something seriously went wrong and you roll while crushing cars or something, I highly doubt the cage would survive the impact and you'd be looking at cutting it all off and starting over again.

      Not just that, What if the cage is strong enough but when the 5 ton is flipped it breaks away from the truck because it is only attached at several points that have to take all the force and all the stress. A chain is only as strong as its weakest link.
      So the whole way the force will be applied during a roll over needs to be considered. Not just a static 'it is laying on the roof' kind of thing, but a dynamic 'it is rolling over'. As that introduces different types of internal forces and stress as well as different external forces.

    If you still have connections with the trophy truck builders, you need to hit them up! Schedule 40 does NOT make for a rollover safe cage. It will absolutely protect you from trees and objects to a certain degree but I'm worried you're going to give yourself a false sense of security and put the truck in more of a potential rollover scenario with no real added safety.
    You should be looking to reenforce your frame tie-in points, you need to be using some more triangulation on your critical support points across the cage. Do this for the cab, who cares about the hood in a rollover.
    What you have isn't wasted yet, but don't trust that same design and material for the passenger compartment! Step up to some Chrome Moly piping that all the race car/truck standards would require as if you were building a cage for drag, circle track, drift, or trophy truck racing.

    I’m a commercial plumbing contractor so I work with that same pipe daily for gas pipe. I know it has a coating from the factory but black schedule 40 needs to be primed and coated or it will rust.
    Looks good besides that brother!

    After building quite a few cages for rock crawlers I’ve discovered running the tubing closer to you body (around 1” - 1 1/2” ) off the body works the best for safety as well as looking better. Just a suggestion.

  • @jenniferwhitewolf3784

    You desperately need triangulation in that mesh of pipe. The strength of the cage is highly compromised with your array of squares. It looks 'beefy' but its really as weak a structure as can be made. Curved pipes have near zero strength under compressive stress as they are already bending. Please contact a real structural engineer.

    To get the frame to swing up to access the hood you should rig up some kind of removable pulley system so you can use the winch from the truck

      @cullenheim 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes the truck weight matters absolutely but Texas DPS and DMV go off of your truck and trailer’s gross weight rating. He probably has 12,000 pound axles on that thing, which would make his GVWR at 24,000 and his actual weight of the truck at 19,500 like he said

    • @cullenheim
      @cullenheim 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      And yes you cannot legally exceed the weight ratings for your truck and trailer

    Well, normally you would follow an SFI specification for a roll cage, but they don't seem to have anything that would fit this application. The closest thing is SFI 47.1 for pull tractors up to 10,000 Lbs, maybe you could use that as a bit of a guide for your cage.
