My Ex was a crab fisherman out of Dutch Harbor AK. Once in a while they'd lose a man overboard. Sometimes they lose the man overboard for good. It's good to see that people are getting a good education about where their food comes from. I adore watching your videos.
My cousin fished those boats in the mid '90s for crab. As soon as he hit the water hey got him back out and he still almost died. That is real men taking real risks for their families.

Hey jacob, would you attach an underwater camera to one of your traps. So that we can all see how the lobsters crawl into it. You demonstrated that to us on the boat but it would be interesting to actually watch the lobsters crawl into the trap. Thank you.
I've worked at a lobster restaurant for over 35 years and about 30 years ago or so read about a person who put cameras on lobster traps to see if trapping had an effect on the population. Their research showed that a lot if lobsters sat out there looking at the trap , but apparently only the unwary ones went in. They did use a different kind of trap back then than Jacob does, though.

This is in San Diego where the Democrats voted to raise the basic wage at $15 to $20 an hour. Somebody's got to subsidize the cost of doing business here.

If you order the right amount the pound will know what is most efficient in terms of shipping cost. It has to be better than $25 lb. What would be quite interesting would be if Jacob and his crew started doing some underwater filming, maybe by having some remote cameras fixed on a cage and/or attached to long pole, so that we can watch the lobster sink with his snack when Jacob throws them back in. You guys are fearless…..was on a boat once when a storm came up. We in Florida and not much warning during the summer…I was so scared…I have never been on a boat since.

I’ve seen people get seasick in a swimming pool. I can only imagine how bad this would be for them! I went fishing on a party boat off the coast of North Carolina once (there is a reason why it was only once) and the weather was cool but not cold and just a mild wind. Weather was supposed to clear by 10 am but the storm at sea decided to go against the weather and charged toward shore and within a half hour we were about 35 miles out or so and waves went from 2 feet or so to at least 5 feet and we ALL got sick but we started catching all kinds of grouper and king mackeral so we stayed to fill up the coolers then raced into the safety of the harbor. Great day overall!!!!
Love the longer videos. How do you get in contact with you to rent out one of your cottages. Been looking into buying property in Maine and need to stay somewhere while I'm there. One of your cottages seems like the best of both worlds. Vacation and business in one trip.
How long did it take you and your crew to get accustomed to the job? Outside of the seasickness, I'm willing to bet that the wetness is another big factor, being wet and cold must not be very fun.
From my own experience on the west coast trollers everyone is different. Some guys never get sick, some guys never get over it. Those guys go home when you hit the dock. I personally would get sick about 3 or 4 hours after leaving and it would last 2 days. Then for the rest of the season it didn't matter how rough it got I never got sick again till the next season. Mind you we were on the boat full time for 6 months where as these guys go home everyday. That might cause them to feel the effects more because they are on and off each day. As for being wet, our rain gear works pretty good. You get kind of in a cocoon and you don't get too wet. Except when the occasional monster wave swipes the deck. The you hope you are hanging on but you get soaked to the ass.

Am curious. It's pitch black out at sea how do you guys locate your traps? Do you use so kind of homing beacons? If after a major storm are the traps still where you left them?
Love to watch you guys. Been there done that with the seasickness. Our dad would take us out deep sea fishing off San Diego. I would never leave the cabin. Sick every time. Only time I felt good was on the straight run home, standing on the bow, with wind and spray in my face. Best part.
Do most Lobster fishermen clean off the lobsters like you do? taking the time to remove barnacles on the ones you return to the sea? I grew up on a cattle ranch in Eastern Montana, just watching the up and down and movement makes me wanna barf. But i recognize the hard work and crappy conditions, feeding 1800 head of cows in below zero weather is something special, and that's with 90lb bales. they switched to round bales when I joined the Army, all that free labor was elsewhere.

Oh they can get upwards of 12-15 lbs if they’re lucky. Once they get over 10 lbs they can’t get into the traps or they can get stuck.

So how do you find your pot lines in the dark? Do they have gps! Or maybe you track where you drop them electronically some how?

We were same way when I was in the Navy in the ‘60s. Our favorite to a sea sick mate was “Hey Jerry, how ‘bout a tuna sandwich with extra mayo?” Result was predictable. Fair winds’ Jacob.

You just beat me to the punch. About 28 years ago my mentor told me "If you're looking for sympathy, I'll tell you where to find it. It's in the dictionary between s***ide & syphilis." I was shocked, but quit whining and got grateful after that.🙏
I own a house in Fort Kent and I miss my fresh lobster I used to get down in Bar Harbor. Love your videos..keep going. My 3 boys also watch I just found out the other day. My oldest sent a text and said to bad about Bowie huh?

Am curious. It's pitch black out at sea how do you guys locate your traps? Do you use so kind of homing beacons? If after a major storm are the traps still where you left them?
Love to watch you guys. Been there done that with the seasickness. Our dad would take us out deep sea fishing off San Diego. I would never leave the cabin. Sick every time. Only time I felt good was on the straight run home, standing on the bow, with wind and spray in my face. Best part.

Do most Lobster fishermen clean off the lobsters like you do? taking the time to remove barnacles on the ones you return to the sea? I grew up on a cattle ranch in Eastern Montana, just watching the up and down and movement makes me wanna barf. But i recognize the hard work and crappy conditions, feeding 1800 head of cows in below zero weather is something special, and that's with 90lb bales. they switched to round bales when I joined the Army, all that free labor was elsewhere.
