I LOVE MY WATERCOLOR PENCILS! I especially love Derwent’s Inktense watercolour pencils! The colors are brilliant and durable. They are also very portable. I just take a few and a waterbrush out to sketch.
I am a beginner with watercolor, and after a lot of research, started my watercolor journey with a 48 set of Goldfaber Aqua watercolor pencils combined with about a dozen Albrecht Durer watercolor pencils. I chose to start my journey with the pencils mainly because the mess involved with watercolor pans and palettes is a huge turnoff for me. I prefer being able to clean my plastic pallete when done with a piece and with the pencils can see what color I need easily. Because I am a senior on a fixed budget, cost is a huge factor. Your reasoning about watercolor pencils is spot on with my experience so far!!! And as a result, I don't expect to be making changes to my medium selection anytime soon. Great video!
I love the flexibility of watercolor pencils, and that you've shown so many ways to use them. Like any other media, they take practice and getting to know them. I've used them in the Strathmore MultiMedia Sketchbook when traveling and they are so convenient, especially for plein air.
@@paintingandchocolate I love the soft cover 500 series. In fact, I did your autumn leaf watercolor pencil tutorial in it, and it turned out beautifully.
I have a set of watercolor pencils that I will be using a lot more after watching this video. I enjoy using wax pencils , and just the graphite pencils in my art. I know they are all different but I have made some really good art with them. Thank you for this video
Thank you for championing WCP's! I have full sets of a few major brands and used them for years, although not so much now. But yes, you can definitely do full, complex paintings with them, and I have done. Two tips that might be helpful for your viewers: 1. To save money, a cheap small white plastic cutting board from the dollar store is textured just like the more expensive brand WCP palette and works just fine and is great for a travel kit, and 2. To avoid weakening the wood collar (where the "lead" comes out) by getting it wet, I put a clear drop of water on my plastic palette or even a junk credit card and quickly dip the color "lead" into that drop of water, which will soften the pigment without risking getting the collar wet. A single drop of water will last a long time.
Love my pencils and I learned all about them by watching your channel. I’ve watched other artists use them also, but really… they have no clue!!! Thank you for your clear and concise instructions. As an oil artist (painter) this whole concept of water was foreign and frustrating… until I binge watched your videos.

This was perfect for me. I am more used to coloured pencils and frustrated with the mess I get into with watercolour. I have a lovely set of watercolour pencils and you have inspired me to try again. The added bonus is I travel a lot in a small campervan so the pencils would be so much more practical than paint tubes or pans. Thank you so much ❤
I travel in a camper van too. Went from East Coast Canada to New Mexico and back at Christmas time and took my travel pallet of watercolours and two 12 packs watercolour pencils with me. I found I used the pencils a lot more than the paints in my travel journal.
Love them. Ever since trying them months ago, I've barely touched regular watercolours. So much more accurate, and then like you say, less water, one container of water, less mess, I use a brush to activate them. I've used them in locations where they'd never allow regular watercolour. I tried an experiment the other day, I coloured the "painting", and then used a spray bottle and misted it, everything popped instantly.
That has definitely been my experience too! You have by far the most comprehensive and helpful watercolor pencil videos. So many others are just artists swatching them out for the first time, which is fine for them to do, of course, but we don’t really learn much about really using them from those videos.
I've tried watercolor pencils a couple of years ago and just couldn't get the hang of it. You are absolutely correct saying that there isn't really anything out there to explain watercolor pencils. I learned more in your video here than I did watching so many videos. Thanks for sharing. ❤
I love water soluble pencils. So many ways to use them. My favorite surface is a watercolor canvas panel. The slightly rougher and less absorbant surface forces a more imprssionistic look (which I like) and the panel never buckles.
The thing that I don’t like is when you see the lines where you’ve colored when you apply the water. I’ve learned to not use too much pressure and color in small circles and add more layers to get darker colors.
For anyone reading this with the same problem: the quality of watercolor pencil also plays a role! I have a set of cheap watercolor pencils where the lines are very visible. With Faber Castell's Albrecht Dürer I have no such problems. Just an additional tip to what you wrote.
Really like watercolour pencils & many years ago when having my first lesson our tutor made us start with pencils & we used a cheaper paper to begin with. Lovely to learn you use them for your lovely paintings. Thanks.
I am a total beginner with watercolors but mixed media is my passion. You have inspired me to try again with watercolor pencils the way they were intended. I can’t draw but I have always wanted to dabble decently with watercolors. I keep giving up.
This was so beautiful to watch. After watching this video I will definitely try to replicate this painting using your techniques, skills and tips you provided with my water color pencils. Thank you so much
Thank you for this video. I have several sets of water- and colored pencils. I can count on one hand the times I've sat down to use them. What I drew turned out better than I expected but I admit, I didn't activate them with water. I recently got the small set of Inktense and made one small painting. The drawing wasn't great but I love the high pigmented color. I'm pretty sure I'll be trying all the watercolor pencils soon. I want to come up with some designs for Christmas cards. It's an assignment I'm giving myself remembering back to a calligraphy class where we were tasked to come up with a Christmas card to donate to a local Senior Center's Giving Tree. I spent eight hours immersed in just doodling with a Hunt nib and several ink colors. I produced five cards and found a favorite color ink. So, that was a great day of practice disguised as play. Seems I have to trick myself into creative time in order to explore. Thanks again. ❤
Beautiful! I use watercolorpencils a lot but I always find it difficult to use the derwent graphite pencils because of the muted colors. I’m really inspired by your tutorials. Thank you so much❤
Thank you! I understand, maybe try them for misty autumn scenes and this should make it better. What I do for other subjects is add regular watercolor pencils to the palette, especially for bright yellows, reds and oranges as these are missing with the graphitint! On my website in the Patreon tutorials section, watercolor pencils, you will see a buoy I created with both graphitint and FC Albrecht Dürer pencils to solve the problem. It worked very well! Hope this helps!
Great video. I have a set of watercolor pencils that were my dad's, and really did not know what to do with them. I am subscribing and looking forward to learning the ins and outs. Thanks!
Beautiful work, inspiring to try watercolour pencils again. I was inspired by your Skillshare class and tried a bit, and saved that class for reference. Got a new box of these pencils for my bday this month, and hope to try to use them more!
Enjoy WC pencils also for travel... Thanks for showing all the ways to use it. Marking the tray with pencil and turning it into WC pigment is so useful especially with pleine aire and travel ease.
Thank you - I love that you champion watercolour pencils! I love them, I use Caran d'ache Museums with a few Inktense for landscapes to get the earthy greens. I first learnt about them as a coloured pencil background, but they were so lovely have gradually built up my collection. I do loads more watercolour now than coloured pencil, and WC pencils are much in use for small areas. I have yet to embark on an entire piece with them. I love this one you have done. 🥰
Watercolour pencils are awesome... its just a matter of knowing how to use them, There are differing ways to use them which makes them versatile. I love using them along with regular water colour paint. Good tutorial 👍
I have a big collection of watercolor pencil especially inktense ones, I used them in the past for mixed media, but I like to use them to add as you said to show depth
I have a really good set of watercolour pencils that have been in my art supplies for years...untouched!!! You've inspired me to have a go. Thanks and I'm subscribing to your channel ❤
You can also experiment with an old chopping board as a palette- less wastage than expensive watercolour paper, not to speak of the lost pigment absorbed by the paper.
I am using watercolor pencils! I do like them a lot, I have a whole set from Temu and it was really affordable. It also has other pencils, charcoal etc. I'm still a beginner though in general in all of painting but I did a few pieces. I've been subscribed to Skillshare, at the moment I am at Domestica & I love all these great courses as there is so much to be learned from. I've started painting with watercolours because it's usually the first medium we get introduced to here in our elementary schools 😂😂😂 so I thought it would be one of the easiest types to start with. How surprised was I when I realized how difficult it actually was! Especially when you compare it to all the other mediums 😂 Still, I'm glad I started with them because I see it helped me understand everything a lot more due to its layering and see through nature... I am looking forward to exploring gouache at the moment and I like using different medias. I think doodling is a great way to start learning and exploring drawing a little bit and through it you can gain more confidence start exploring everything else and you kind of get a hand for drawing. Thank you for this great video, I really enjoyed your view on this topic ❤
Thx for sharing this. I LOVE watercolor pencils -- use them on paper and canvas -- and will take away your suggestion to premix on a rough palette! So helpful😊
Tky for your explanation which I will give a try with my different brands of water colors pencils (Albrecht durer, Muséum etc..) that I had never used yet, since 2020! You had giving me some ideas how to use them! I am using mostly oil pastel! From Quebec in Canada 🇨🇦! I am watching you since the last three years now! 😊
Actually, I got a small set for my birthday a few years ago, when I didn't know that the there was such a thing. So, I started with pencils and recently bought a cheap set of tube water colors. I really like the definition they add to using a brush.
Thank you for this. I'm brand new to the art world.....any and all art and I thought I could figure out wc pencils but no, I didn't have a clue and I did quit. This was so helpful. Again, thank you!
Im just learning. I have cheap supplies to begin with, but I have a 30 color WC pallet, Canson "Graduate" paper, and 24 WC pencils. Thank you for the tutorials! 🙏❣️🕯️🤗
I initially used WC pencils as my intro to WC! Honestly, my favorite pieces were all done with them. I’ve recently been using traditional paints because I wanted to learn how to use them, but more and more, I’m missing my pencils. I think I’m going to start doing mixed pieces so that I can incorporate both! I struggle to very small brushes due to a medical condition, and using a WC pencil makes it so much easier to do the small, intricate details in things.
After watching some of your prior videos on watercolor pencil, I purchased a pallet for watercolor pencil and 2 sets of pencils (forgot I order one set that was out for delivery luckily they are different sets). That said, I have owned them for two months and have yet to use them kind of silly. Thank you for this video time to put some watercolor pencil to paper.
I've used watercolours for years, decades. For me I love the balance between sketch and final. I love to be able to draw back in to the painting with a high contrast, almost pastel like texture.
older artist here. im a painter and a mixed media fiber artist, and i have had over the years so many watercolour pencil sets. my collection is a mix of many different companies and they live in the derwent box which was the last set i bought, for the box. if you dont want to worry about dragging water to use the water brush pens are good. i have had fun doing the edge of an outline then use water to blend the colour towards the middle
Excellent explanation, thank you so much! I will definitely try watercolour pencils. It's good to know the choice of paper is not so important as with normal watercolour, but which paper would you recommend?
A paper that has some tooth but still smooth enough that there will be minimal marks left. Watercolor or drawing,.thick enough to handle some water. 270gsm minimum is great!
I will be taking mine out again. Thanks for the inspiration! One thing I have never found out and maybe you can enlighten me is how you sharpen your watercolor pencils.
You're welcome ! I use an old fashioned metal sharpener, the simplest one that has been around for decades in schools and stores. Sometimes this or that sharpener will work better for you depending on the pencil too! Softer leads do better with certain sharpeners otherwise they break (usually for me i avoid plastic sharpener with these or fancy sharpeners, I use the metal basic one).
Hi there! I love your videos, and I am always looking for something new to learn or immerse myself into. I have a goal for this year, and that is to deep dive into the world of watercolor, both with paints and pencils. I love colors, and want to learn more about efficient uses for shadows and light. Thank you for sharing!! Katla Dragon in Norway
I just recently purchased a box and it’s on its way. Interesting this is popped up in my feed now. First time here. Will subscribe. You have the magic word….chocolate,lol.
Thank you for this video, it is really inspiring and you paint beautifully. I am just wondering by rubbing the water colour pencil in water does it ruin the pencil?
I use my water color pencils , Inktense, all the time for creating cards! I LOVE THEM! I use pastels, pastel pencils, water color paint, and water color pencils, sometimes all of them on one card or picture.lol
I use them all the time ... generally in bed at night with a squirt brush. Get an idea while settled in watching tv ; I'm not going to get up & go set up my watercolor paints. I just grab the small sketchbook, pencils, & water brush on the nightstand .... 😊 Also, I'll take 1 or 2 with me out urban sketching (usually a grey, or some color not in my pallet, etc)
Du machst sehr schöle Illustrationen! Bravo! LG.
Is that an embossing heat gun being used to dry the paint with? I have a fairly cheap one, is there a heat gun you recommend or prefer? Great information, thanks for the demo. I have quite a few of these pencils and water soluble graphites to use, and that same palette for pencils and crayons, it was a great purchase!
I used to use watercolor pencils a lot 'cuz I love watercolor effect but hate wasting paint... Sadly I had to put art to the side while in college, especially when working on my thesis & never really got back into it. This video made me crave arting again & will probably go draw some mushrooms & jellyfish when I get home :3
I started off watercolor with using pencils. Then i tried thr pallettes and that was fun too, now i wanna go grab my pencils again when I do my next watercolor piece lol
I tried them when Derwent watercolor pencils with graphite first came out and they faded. Inktense is INK not watercolor. Different animal altogether. These are good for coloring books and staining t-shirts, etc.
I use watercolor pencils for sketching since they're so portable. I combine them with water tank pens. I have a long way to go, but the potential is astounding
I am wondering is water color pencil painting or water color paint are water proved after it is dry? I try to start to pain and in the process of decide to what paints i should start with. Thank you.
I have a large set of Faber Castell watercolour pencils and that palette you use in the video. Is there a difference between brands of watercolour pencils?
Hi, what is the watercolour paper brand you mention at 5:10 straight after you talk about the Stillman and Birn Beta sketchbook? Do you have a link, please?
Will you try watercolor pencils? If you need my help and guidance, check out all classes and tutorials on my website: www.paintingandchocolate.com/

Im just learning. I have cheap supplies to begin with, but I have a 30 color WC pallet, Canson "Graduate" paper, and 24 WC pencils.
Thank you for the tutorials!
🙏❣️🕯️🤗
You're welcome 🙂
I initially used WC pencils as my intro to WC! Honestly, my favorite pieces were all done with them.
I’ve recently been using traditional paints because I wanted to learn how to use them, but more and more, I’m missing my pencils. I think I’m going to start doing mixed pieces so that I can incorporate both! I struggle to very small brushes due to a medical condition, and using a WC pencil makes it so much easier to do the small, intricate details in things.
Yes, they're a nice asset to watercolor itself you're right!
Yes, let le know how it is 🙂
I've used watercolours for years, decades.
For me I love the balance between sketch and final. I love to be able to draw back in to the painting with a high contrast, almost pastel like texture.
Thank you for sharing about how you use them!
Love your classes F..so clear, so vivid ..thank you
Thank you !
older artist here. im a painter and a mixed media fiber artist, and i have had over the years so many watercolour pencil sets. my collection is a mix of many different companies and they live in the derwent box which was the last set i bought, for the box. if you dont want to worry about dragging water to use the water brush pens are good. i have had fun doing the edge of an outline then use water to blend the colour towards the middle
That's a good idea, thank you for sharing 🙂
I've found the best way to get the paint stain off my Caran D'Ache palette is with a "magic eraser" (melamine sponge eraser).
Thank you for sharing! I have one of these sponges around here to try.
I would love to learn more about watercolor pencils. I have subscribed to your channel to learn from you. !!!
Thank you Ralph, there are a lot of watercolor pencils videos on the channel so I hope you will be inspired and urged to go create with them 🙂
I'm going to start using mine . Wow thank you
You're welcome ! 🙂
Thank YOU!
Okay, I will try!
Happy painting then!
I love watercolors, and you inspired me to order my first dozen! ❤🎉
Yay! It makes me happy to read this, enjoy!
Thank you Katla
I just recently purchased a box and it’s on its way. Interesting this is popped up in my feed now. First time here. Will subscribe. You have the magic word….chocolate,lol.
Yes, chocolate is important 🙂 i'm glad this video found you!
When I saw the title I was like "oh no, did just waste money for a 120 set". No no! I found a gold mine! 😁
I hadn't thought about it this way 🙂
this is fascinating, I should really give them a try ☺☺
Yes, I didn't know if you had or not yet.
I love mine!
I Thankyou kindly. I am very inspired to create with watercolour pencils ✏️✨👌🏽
You're very welcome 🙂
cool! I will try to use them more!
Glad this is useful!
Really enjoyed this,I will use a bit more often than I have 👍🏻👍🏻
I'm glad to read this!
Thank you for this video, it is really inspiring and you paint beautifully. I am just wondering by rubbing the water colour pencil in water does it ruin the pencil?
It will be fine if you don't wet the wood itself 🙂
So beautiful, and what a great idea jusing watercolurpencils, I will try my own like you did here, thank you🫐
You're welcome !
Yes that's such a relaxing way to use them 🙂
Thank you
You're welcome !
yes! I love them
🙌
Du machst sehr schöle Illustrationen! Bravo! LG.
Is that an embossing heat gun being used to dry the paint with? I have a fairly cheap one, is there a heat gun you recommend or prefer? Great information, thanks for the demo. I have quite a few of these pencils and water soluble graphites to use, and that same palette for pencils and crayons, it was a great purchase!
Yes it is a scrapbooking supply to begin with. Have fun with your pencils!
great video, I have albrecht durer watercolor pencils I am not using, but I will now, thanks just amazing!😊
You're welcome, have fun!
Very happy to hear this!🙌 have fun!
I started off watercolor with using pencils. Then i tried thr pallettes and that was fun too, now i wanna go grab my pencils again when I do my next watercolor piece lol
Have fun!😃
@@paintingandchocolate thank you!
I have a set that's almost 10 years old. Now my daughter likes to use them and doesn't even use water with them 😅 i may give them a second try
Do, they're so great!
I actually want both watercolor and colour pencils but I can't afford both of them at once, so I think watercolor would be great for me.
I tried them when Derwent watercolor pencils with graphite first came out and they faded. Inktense is INK not watercolor. Different animal altogether. These are good for coloring books and staining t-shirts, etc.
Yes, yes, yes!
I use watercolor pencils for sketching since they're so portable. I combine them with water tank pens. I have a long way to go, but the potential is astounding
I agree!
I am wondering is water color pencil painting or water color paint are water proved after it is dry? I try to start to pain and in the process of decide to what paints i should start with. Thank you.
If you wet a painting again and do some back and forth with a brush it will most likely lift a bit so no it's not.
I love them
I'm glad we are a community who enjoy it
really a good video
Been teaching myself watercolour pencils by trial and error. Mostly error. Thanks for the great tips
You're welcome 🙂
Beautiful!❤
Thank you !
i've had a set of watercolor pencils for a few years, but haven't used them much because i wasn't sure how to.
Then I am glad this video found you, thank you for your message !
I have a large set of Faber Castell watercolour pencils and that palette you use in the video. Is there a difference between brands of watercolour pencils?
To use the palette no. But in general yes as cheaper types of WC will feel more dry, break more easily, be less pigmented.
Hi, what is the watercolour paper brand you mention at 5:10 straight after you talk about the Stillman and Birn Beta sketchbook? Do you have a link, please?
Arches cold press 100% cotton watercolor paper
Thank you!
I feel seen and now I’m thinking I shouldn’t hav started with the Inktense pencils!
So my sold watercolor pencil piece sold in a gallery for 2k ….
Very informative
I'm glad it was helpful!
Yes,I'll get my pencils out again now.😊
Yay!😁
