I firmly believe that even if the Broncos drafted Josh Allen, they would have completely mishandled his development and he would have been a bust. Just in the same way they did with Drew Lock.
Drew Lock actually still has starting potential & likely would be very good right now had Carroll gave him the opportunity. As far as Allen his development came thru Palmer in the offseason who he'd still been working with if he went to the Broncos. & Broncos have invested alot into WR's so likely would've done very well with them along with a better O-Line(when healthy)ij denver.
It's not only taking the right people. The right person has to be paired with the right coach in the right system and then the right players around him. There's so much that goes into it

I think what really settles it about the Broncos drafting history is that the two best and most accomplished QBs in their history were ones they didn't draft. Both were drafted by the Colts, in fact.
Of all the wacky catchphrases to echo in my mind when I hear Russell Wilson’s name, the one’s that stood the test of time is “…..that’s not what he wanted to cook.”
You should compare the Raiders drafting of the last 5 years to the Broncos. All of their overreaches and missed first round picks are insane. Also the fact that the only have one player left on their roster in the 2020 draft and it was their last pick.
My biggest problem with Elway as a GM was how the O-line was often neglected in the drafts after Manning retired. Other than Bolles, it seems that he drafted undersized O-line projects in the later rounds that didn't pan out. In free agency, he gambled on big men coming off of injuries. No wonder the quarterback carousel happened! The O-line size and skill level is imperative to success of any QB. If you can't give him a clean pocket, he will fail. The league has changed since Elway won the Super Bowl with an undersized O-line against the GB Packers 25 years ago. Maybe he thought that the recipe would still work. The proof is in the pudding. Elway was a GREAT player!!! But as a GM, he fumbled the ball more than not.
Very true. Elway had wonderful career as a player but was never very bright. Hearing him speak publicly is always an embarrassment. Too many former players think that playing the game equates to manage in the organization and they are typically failures like elway. He should have taken his super bowl rings and gone once his playing career ended. Now, especially outside of the suffocating foolishness of their delusional fans, the rest of the football world remembers him as a total failure as a general manager
The back-to-back SB champ Broncos of the late 90's had a big-time running game that other teams couldn't stop, and great backs like Terrell Davis. I never realized those were "undersized" linemen. Also, Elway was hard to sack because of his mobility. Interesting that, as you say, Elway kept drafting smallish project O-Linemen, as if HE was still the QB under center.
I'm a University of Utah alumnus and season ticket holder, so I mean this in the nicest way: teams shouldn't draft U of U offensive players in the first round. Utah teams--and esp their offenses--are always greater than the sum of their parts, and Utah's head coach Kyle Whittingham is well known for finding ways to maximize the talents of lesser players, which is a necessity when you have to recruit in the same region as USC and Oregon. I love Utah and I give Whittingham all the credit in the world for regularly kicking the shit out of teams that have more raw talent at every position, but that's exactly the point--Utah's excellent team play makes individual players look better than they are. If Garrett Boles, for example, had been taken as late second/early third round picks, the expectations for him would have been lower, he wouldn't have been expected to start immediately, and considering the level of play he eventually reached, he'd be see as a smart pick and nfl success story instead of a borderline first round bust. Alex Smith got screwed with coaching/front office stupidity at San Francisco, but I think a similar case could have been made that his career would have gone better if he hadn't been the first overall pick. And now there's buzz about TE Dalton Kincaid going in the first round, and jesus I hope that doesn't happen because he just isn't ready. Again, if he were to be drafted in the second or third rounds nd given some time to develop without the pressure to start then I think he could have an excellent professional career. But some stupid team like Dallas is going to take him in the first round and make him one more disappointment from Utah.
The fact he was 25 years old when drafted to me means if he was a 4th rounder at Oline, or above I am expecting him to be able to start immediately. If not I might as well take a guy that is 3 or 4 years younger to develop in the first 4 rounds.
I was born in Springfield Missouri and lived most of my life and emporia Kansas so I'm a Chiefs fan for the most part that being said I think the broncos had a particularly rough season but they're not as bad as their record would show and this year under the leadership of Sean Payton should be a playoff contender and I look forward to Wilson having a bounce back season
Ugh… I was super hesitant to watch this Balls Deep episode because I knew it would be painful. Aaaaand, I was 100% correct. Eight years! Eight years of sucking horribly, missing the playoffs, and losing over and over again to the Chefs. And the reason why is all laid out in clear and concise fashion by the great Brandon Perna and exceptional Will Keys. I don’t think I can take a ninth year of agony. Please don’t suck next year, please don’t suck next year, please don’t suck next year…..
I feel bad for you between the terrible terrible trade deal with the Seahawks Russell Wilson blowing the rest of your draft picks on an old washed-up has-been coach whose only claim to fame is being suspended for an entire season for lying and cheating is an incredibly bad look for Denver and will surely result in a major blow back from karma. I don't think there is anyone anywhere in that organization that has one iota of ethical or moral values. Then you add in the fact that you have owners who don't know a football from an eggplant, it is a recipe for disaster. Maybe consider switching
Could be worse. You could be a Browns fan. 9 years of agony? Try 24, and counting. Plus, as bad as it may seem, at least the Broncos are not a walking punchline to the entire league for gross mismanagement.
@@AleisterMeowley To me it seemed like the Seahawks were the Broncos personal doormat for a lot of the 80s and 90s during the Elway years. To Elway's credit, his first two drafts were goldmines and were what built the foundation for Denver's super bowl win. Everything since then has been dreadful.
I don't think Josh Allen would have developed with the coaching staff at the time for the Broncos. It did take him a couple of seasons in Buffalo to get going, with much better coaching. So in a way, I am happy the Broncos didn't draft him because we wouldn't get to see awesomeness every week. At least this is what I tell myself to cope with not drafting him.
I think we can directly also attribute Allen's better numbers with the signing of Stefan Diggs. You can afford to be a foot or two off-target if the wide out has created three feet of separation. Not to downplay Allen's own improvements with accuracy and mechanics, that did happen too.
Can anyone think of 5 tight ends worth a 1st round pick in the last 20 years? Vernon Davis, Heath Miller, and guy playing with Manning on colts Dallas Clark I think, are the only 3 true game changers who's production couldn't be replicated with other guys. I'm a lions fan and in the last 14 or so years lions took 3 tight ends in the 1st round. Pettigrew was essentially a bust. Ebron had skill but never actually developed and improved beyond where he started. Then God damn hockenson. Goff through 7 picks and 3 or 4 were going to hockenson where he missed a signal, ran the wrong route or gave up on a play. But lions took best receiving TE zylstra, best blocking TE Brock Wright, and the one who does both at average level but has high ceiling, and easily matched hockensons production while eliminating his errors. Guys like Hayden Hurst, Evan engram and Noah fant are basically considered bust or close to it. But if they were drafted round 3 or 4 they'd be a very nice draft pick up
Never understood the infatuation with KJ Hamler. Denver media made Tyreek Hill comparisons. Being fast and small only goes so far if you can’t catch the football and break like porcelain when you do catch it and someone hits you.
He started off strong - signing already developed and established players - by buying a Super Bowl. I'll take it, but had he been able to parlay that into lasting success, he wouldn't have just gone out with a squeak and a puff of dust. Thanks, John Elway, indeed.
Bad drafts happen. Giving up high picks and paying a non elite qb is the real killer. My Hawks set themselves back years with the Jamal Adams trade. I suppose there are examples of trades like this working; tyreek to Miami or cmc to the 49ers for example, but generally speaking… teams should keep their picks. Loved the video, excellent content
Watching this video in October of 23 helps remind me that we are all pretty bad at evaluating talent. Yeah the Broncos messed up a lot, but our gracious host missed badly on Fields.
Haven’t paid much attention to Denver’s drafts. For a while I thought Elway’s drafting of defensive players was pretty impressive. What’s really been remarkable though is how bad the team has been at drafting and developing QBs.
I think Justin Fields is a good player but no George made the right pick. Justin wouldn't have changed anything in 2019 or 2020. If anything you should feel that way about the Wilson trade not the Pat pick
@@tombosley3048 well 1 Justin didn’t get drafted until 2021 2 as a bears fan I am so happy that everybody let him slip because now we have fields, who broke out last season despite his wr core having the worst route win % in the league, who will now be throwing to the guy that put up 4 catches for 103 yards and a td on surtain
Surtain is a non factor on the team. Yeah, he's a great corner. He's an amazing corner. But one amazing corner on a team has absolulely zero impact on the outcome of games. One corner can only cover one man. And opposing teams will just look to throw to the other 75-85% of the field that is always wide open, as they've done in every game since we got Surtain. I love Surtain, but his talent, no matter how good it is, will never ever actually win us games.
Fields changes nothing for Denver if they had him over Surtain, Surtain would be an all pro still somewhere else and Denver would be probably be picking first just like Chicago was
Brandon, you should thank the Broncos for jumping up to snatch Paxton Lynch away from the Chiefs. Part of your allure is as the humorous, lovable, long-suffering Broncos fan. That couldn't have happened if the Broncos weren't actively trying to out-dumpster-fire the Browns and be worse than Mark Davis's haircut. In a way, that draft pick made you who you are today. Much love for you and your coffee from Chiefs Kingdom. ❤💛
9:39 - honestly it’s probably best for both Allen and the Broncos that Denver passed on him. He needed a lot of development to be good (he wasn’t good for a while with Buffalo) and he probably would not have turned out nearly as well with the Broncos.
Tell your friends, family, pets, weird guy on the bus, or people who go into stores and don’t buy anything. We all must work together as a team…..to make sure Perna gets that tattoo. Lol
Hey Brandon “I might catch a case perna” you coming to the draft in KC this year? If so let me know brother I’d love to show you around the city and grab a beer with you dude! Love your content🙏🏼
On the Josh Allen point, broncos had agreed with McBeane to trade 1.05 for the bills 2 first round picks (I wanna say 1.12 and 1.21? I forget exactly). Unless Chubb was still there. Thus, Chubb got drafted and the bills sent their early first and two other picks to move up and take Allen in a deal with the Bucs.
Chubb over Allen and Surtain over Fields are decisions I'd comfortably make even in hindsight. Yes, you need to get your QB right eventually. But the disrespect for position players is unreal.
As a Panthers fan, I have no sympathy. Sure, you guys have been terrible at drafting since borrowing Peyton Manning just long enough to beat us, but you borrowed Peyton Manning just long enough to beat us.
How bad have The Bronco's been at drafting since Peyton Manning? As a Colt's fan; You are not alone. I am here with you. Though you're far away, *PAIN* is here to stay.
Hey to be fair to the Russel Wilson trade. You can’t draft poorly if you don’t draft at all. It’s why I as a Bears fan haven’t complained about a draft in 6 years
Tbh Josh Allen had all the markings of a bust..you trying to sound cute like that would have been your choice but i gaurentee you was callin him the 3 or 4th best qb that year..if not please post something to prove you thought josh allen was the pick to make..everyone sounds smart in hindsight.
Perna I have no idea what you are on. Fields sucked bad last year too. He had a couple of game where he ran but he showed little to no improvement as a passer.
Hey I say the same thing about Casey remember when Casey drafted Nicole Hartman we literally could have had DK Metcalf and I believe a stud running back that class too and I believe saquon Barkley or some like that but no we opted to get Nicole Hartman who never lived up to his his pick actually the Edwards hilaire draft was the same way we could have got three other stud running backs before because he was a first back to go in that
As a reminder of just how bad RW was last year, Trevor Siemian, a 7th round draft pick and first year starter, had more TDs, fewer INTs, half the sacks and twice the wins. On the plus side, RW was an upgrade over Paxton Lynch.
Never realized majority of the players in the 2019 draft for Denver ended up playing for Seattle
And we thank you for it! Go Hawks!
As a 49ers, I would like to thank the Broncos as well.
I firmly believe that even if the Broncos drafted Josh Allen, they would have completely mishandled his development and he would have been a bust. Just in the same way they did with Drew Lock.

Or maybe when they look for a new HC in 2019, they hire an offense-oriented coach like Zac Taylor or Matt LaFleur instead of Vic Fangio.
And then Josh Allen would be a Seahawk now instead of Lock
Makes you think how many possibly Hall of Fame worthy careers were ruined by bad franchises. RG3 comes to mind.
Where they really messed up is not hiring Kyle. Pair Kyle and Josh and that is lethal.
It's not only taking the right people. The right person has to be paired with the right coach in the right system and then the right players around him. There's so much that goes into it
Which is how the draft continues to be a total crapshoot despite all the experts analyzing every aspect of every player for years in advance.
Drafting is an art, not a science.

I love Surtain, but his talent, no matter how good it is, will never ever actually win us games.
player vs player surtain is obviously better. but if we compare positional values
The one time Elway passed in a prototypical tools based raw qb prospect….it’s JOSH ALLEN 😂
9:39 - honestly it’s probably best for both Allen and the Broncos that Denver passed on him. He needed a lot of development to be good (he wasn’t good for a while with Buffalo) and he probably would not have turned out nearly as well with the Broncos.
Yeah without Big Balls Daboll and the team they surrounded him with Allen wouldn't be where he is today.
We like Lock up here in Seattle. He's a real nice kid with a great arm. Really hoping he can become the future after Geno.
Very great video Perna!
The Lions were terrible at drafting until recently.
2:28
You don't have to like it, but this is what peak performance looks like boys !
And you have the nerve to make fun of the Ravens, one of the most successful young franchises in NFL history?
Chubb over Allen and Surtain over Fields are decisions I'd comfortably make even in hindsight. Yes, you need to get your QB right eventually. But the disrespect for position players is unreal.
I love this channel lmao
As a Panthers fan I enjoyed this video tremendously
We have one month to get Perna to 400k? Let's ride😈
As a Panthers fan, I have no sympathy. Sure, you guys have been terrible at drafting since borrowing Peyton Manning just long enough to beat us, but you borrowed Peyton Manning just long enough to beat us.
Peyton Manning was a Indianapolis Colt
How bad have The Bronco's been at drafting since Peyton Manning?
As a Colt's fan; You are not alone. I am here with you. Though you're far away, *PAIN* is here to stay.
I cant believe this is my first time seeing the "thank you to John Elway" clip
"not so fast mother lickers!" - great show, damn funny
Did he say the 14th was Sunday? Not in April it's not.
"Thank you to John Elway" bruh I'm dead hahahahaha
Hey to be fair to the Russel Wilson trade. You can’t draft poorly if you don’t draft at all. It’s why I as a Bears fan haven’t complained about a draft in 6 years
I understand your pain but damn as a bills fan I still love Denver for passing on him
As a Chiefs fan these videos are so fun to watch! Keep it up Denver.
What are the odds you watched a single Chiefs game in 2012?
There should be a playlist called “Year from Hell” with your videos on the broncos last year
Tbh Josh Allen had all the markings of a bust..you trying to sound cute like that would have been your choice but i gaurentee you was callin him the 3 or 4th best qb that year..if not please post something to prove you thought josh allen was the pick to make..everyone sounds smart in hindsight.
As a chiefs fan....... Thank you!
Still cant believe Russel Wilson got roasted by Patrick star 💀
That will forever be meme
Perna I have no idea what you are on. Fields sucked bad last year too. He had a couple of game where he ran but he showed little to no improvement as a passer.
Hey I say the same thing about Casey remember when Casey drafted Nicole Hartman we literally could have had DK Metcalf and I believe a stud running back that class too and I believe saquon Barkley or some like that but no we opted to get Nicole Hartman who never lived up to his his pick actually the Edwards hilaire draft was the same way we could have got three other stud running backs before because he was a first back to go in that
that hoodie looks mad comfy
I'm still traumatized from Paxton Lynch.
i didn’t realize its been 7 years since denver made the playoffs. crazy
At least your owner isn’t Dan Snyder
3-14 Fields is terrible. Look at him run, sure if he's a RB. bUT AS A qb, he's painful to watch!
I feel the pain in your voice Perna
As a reminder of just how bad RW was last year, Trevor Siemian, a 7th round draft pick and first year starter, had more TDs, fewer INTs, half the sacks and twice the wins. On the plus side, RW was an upgrade over Paxton Lynch.
That transition at 2:30 looks like Harrison Ford in a nursing home with a stomach ache
