      Welcome aboard! You are beginning to understand why we are everywhere and go to great lengths to experience the ultimate in music experience. There are not words to describe being in the presence of an Eyes being played like that. When the bass is felt and not heard, when the emotional guitar work makes you smile so big that your face muscles hurt the next day.
      There is no "sitting around" at a Grateful Dead "world" picnic when Eyes is played...however, you may find yourself moving & wiggling in a pool of sweat with 20,000 of your closet sisters n brothers.

      They are just the pinnacle of jam masters and it’s definitely one of those bands you can sit yourself down at a massive stage in a park like Central Park NYC or Hyde Park London where you can get 100,000 plus, families, dogs playing with each other .. surfing the leftovers and stealing the chicken sandwiches and cheese etc too xxx Hehehehe...... I know I’d love it and my Dalmatian Vashti would too ..... she’d just go round everyone looking to get clapped and snuggled while giving out kisses and hoping you’d give her a little something, apple core, melon skin, carrot, chicken(only if no bones and she’s been a very good girl) etc etc .... love it

    Phil Lesh on the bass is a master. He essentially learned to play the bass while in the band. That's why he sounds like noone else. He had a classical music upbringing and was a fan of some really out there composers.
    Robert Hunter wrote a large portion of the lyrics that Jerry sung, he was a brilliant mind of a different level.

      Remember - Phil had background and training in classical music (played violin and trumpet), with a particular interest in avante-garde composers, which gave him the understanding and love for unusual time signatures and poly-rhythmic structure. The violin gave him the left hand he needed to translate all of that passion into the bass. My son followed the same path - trained as a classical violinist, and later took up the bass -

    • @aryehbarson
      @aryehbarson 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Phil is a wonder of taking a simple two-chord progression (like the solo sections here) and giving them life and sustenance not previously beknown to humans. It keeps it from getting stale and trite. He is so not a "meat and potatoes" bass player. After his awesome solo he hits a low G a couple of times (about 11:51), indicating he really wants to go elsewhere but not really spelling out where he wants to go. The boys aren't willing to relent just yet. but concede to try some alternate avenues. After about 14:35 they've totally shifted gears. I still don't know how they do it and remained coherent.

  • @tixximmi1

      Unfortunately they cut out much of the jamming & the parts they do include they cut to the hallway to show some spaced out hippies meandering around & then cut to the hot dog vendor. • @sideshowbob
      @sideshowbob 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@pmbbmp Well they only had camera crews at the Oct 17, 18, 19, 20 1974 show with the lights turned on (remember the guy complaining about this in the movie?). So it has to be from 1 of those 4 shows (yes they played the 16th also but that show wasn't video'd). It can't be the 20th since that one was in the 3rd set which featured Mickey Hart sitting in. Also can't be from the 16th as they jammed into it that night & this & the movie versions start from a dead stop. My Deadbase & all the tapes I've ever had of that complete run have an Eyes - China Doll from the 19th. We can check with Archive.org. Note Donna often sat out entire songs especially during the psychedelic segments. Don't think any other shows from that era were ever video'd (much less using multi cam's with lights on), or if they were, it's in someone's attic or vault somewhere.

    I fell in love with this song in 2019, while cycling on a local trail. It was beautiful summer day, perfect for cycling, and I just finished listening to this song. As I was cycling, I started look closer at the trees, plants, and flowers around me. It was then looking around at nature, I made the connection We are The Eyes of the World. We can see and comprehend the natural world. We gain a love and an appreciation towards our world. Some of these songs have no studio versions too. Please do Brown Eyed Women, Ramble on Rose, Jack Straw, Mr Charlie, Sugar Magnolia, China Cat Sunflower and I could list every song really. And this is only one album. Then go to Skull and Roses, Workingman’s Dead and American Beauty and many more. THE GREATEST BAND EVER!!! Better than The Beatles and the Stones. And they even have the live videos from the actual tour of these songs from Europe ‘72 on TH-cam already. The best of both worlds. To watch them actually performing these iconic versions is a trip for all who know them note for note.

    Grateful dead (or grateful ghost) is a folktale present in many cultures throughout the world. The most common story involves a traveler who encounters a corpse of someone who never received a proper burial, typically stemming from an unpaid debt. The traveler then either pays off the dead person's debt or pays for burial. The traveler is later rewarded or has their life saved by a person or animal who is actually the soul of the dead person; the grateful dead is a form of the donor.[1][2] The grateful dead spirit may take many different physical forms including that of a guardian angel, animal, or fellow traveler.[3] The traveler's encounter with the deceased comes near the end of the traveler's journey.

      Got out of a potential minor bust in Landover,MD 1990 by telling that story. After being messed with for a long time, one of the officers asked me, "What's with all the Skeletons?" I began telling them about the common mythology story from many cultures around the world. Then told them the story of the traveler helping a stranger & ten being helped himself later in his travels. I could tell I had them completely enthralled & I knew we'd make it through ok!

      And then there is this:
      In the land of the dark, the Ship of the Sun is driven by the Grateful Dead.

      And as we stand on the edge of darkness Let our chant fill the void That others may know In the land of the night The ship of the sun Is drawn by The grateful dead.

      @@troubledwaters7441 He's right. You are not quite right. People in the early Dead scene were aware of the Egyptian book of the Dead. But Kevin mythology noted above is very well documented including the definition of that basic mythology in the dictionary where Garcia found the band name. Most notably published in, "The Official Book of the Deadheads" back in 1983.

    Dude, this is the song and version that I put on when we brought our son home from the hospital when he was born!! It's really cool to see you and your interaction with it. I had him listen to it and now he is 13 and playing Grateful Dead music on his guitar. One thing I want to mention, at some point I figured out I was a Deadhead long before I ever listened to the Grateful Dead. Maybe sometime soon you will have that realization too. Peace and love to you. Stuart

    Im a white musician, and by design, I only had black teachers, voice, and guitar. Every time I brought up the Dead (even though one of them played with Weir occasionally) they would say something like"you didn't see no brotha's at those Dead shows, chuckle chuckle." I could understand that coming from the voice coach, and they were more or less correct, but I always thought the "too white for us" stigma was bullshit. Thanks, Jamal. that was almost like redemption for me.

    This is easily in my top 2-3 Eye's. The one from Nassau on Without A Net with Branford Marsalis is up there as well. Musically I love that one not just for Marsalis, but for the musical conversation between him and Garcia that grows so rapidly and knowing that he didn't know the song and this was (I believe) the second song of his first sit in with the band. The way he's just grooving, then Jerry shows him some things, he responds, and back and forth they go until they end with dual lines running in and out of each other. Pure magic! That version made me run out and get a guitar synth for my own!
