Branford didn't practice with the band on these songs , that's what makes them so magical, he was locked in, especially here, this is the sound of God.

It is remarkable how none of this was rehearsed, practiced, or planned. In fact, Branford came to sit in on Bird Song in the 1st set. Once he passed that test w/ flying colors, the band pleaded w/ him to stay for the 2nd set saying, “c’mon, we’ll play Dark Star!” And as Branford tells it his response was “yeah, Ok cool, but what the heck is Dark Star?” Truly a magical night on Long Island and thank God the tapes were rolling.

All the gumbo is at full boil and all the pistons are firing. Jbear's playing is energetic, Weir is filling in like a champ, Lesh is plumping his heart out and the Devils are sliding and bumping. But the golden trio is Bret (GRHS), Jerry and Winford. Those cascading runs and just the way they answer each other's questions... It makes sense inasmuch as the Dead have played numerous times at the Coliseum- they even have an album “ Go To Nassau “ from a live 1981 show. All I can say is Let’s go Islanders as the Coliseum sadly will be demolished and the new arena on Long Island is being built in Elmont near Belmont park.

1990, until Brent’s mishap, was one of the best dead years. I saw the last five shows of the summer tour. My first shows were the “downhill from here” alpine valley shows in ‘89. I didn’t know what I was in for and couldn’t fully appreciate those shows, especially the first bid you goodnight in over ten years on the first night. People were going nuts and I was like, “what?” I didn’t even have live dead at that point.
In the intervening year I put myself through Grateful Dead University, graduated with flying colors and was completely ready for those 1990 shows.

This is musical perfection. I've seen them all, and hundreds of dead shows, no other band played live to such perfection. They saved it for the studio & live was always a mess. Not the dead. Too bad there hasn't been more recent appreciation for the "magic" of this song from music lovers-, let alone DeadHeads.
I never heard such close, and comprehensive harmony during the entirety of my Grateful Dead run from 90 to 94. I was literally 3 months shy of my first show when this happened.
The story goes Branford was a guest of Phil's, as he was a fan of his Dad. Branford apparently hadn't met the rest of the band prior to the show allegedly-......
All I know, I've NEVER seen or heard Jerry JAM on somebody else's lead. It happens here-, and its amazing. This is the song that explained everything-
    Pure Magic!

Nope, my college buddy, Jim, set this up. We graduated in 88 but he was still in Ithaca doing music things with Branford. Jim's family was involved in music and had Dead connections. Jim said to Branford essentially, "let's go to the Coliseum and jam with the Dead..." The rest is history. I was there and it was beyond special. Google Branford about this, he has spoken on record about his friend Jim being responsible for this special night. Miss these days a whole lot. Enjoy...

As a college student I played this song for a high school co-worker saxophone (also valedictorian of his high school!) player and he literally let a fork from the breakfast special we had ordered hang from his lip. It is one of my most satisfying moments as a 'HEAD,' seeing this young kid just wook out to Bransford and the Dead

Well 2 weeks later on sparkling Sat. afternoon Jerry Band took the stage at the Waikiki Shell in Kapiolani park and never have myself and the maybe 1500 people at the show been completely blown away by Jerry that magical day. He was feeling good and we were truly blessed
