    OK guys, in this video I am going to be teaching you a very complicated DJ transition. We are going to be using polyrhythmic mixing techniques. We are going to be using the CDJ 3000 and we will be looping 3/2 bars.
    This will allow us to go from 120 BPM- 170 BPM.
    If you have ever wondered how to mix between different BPM or Genres, this video will certainly help you out!
    Very complicated mixing technique but I think some of you will love it!
    Hi, I am DJ Phil Harris, and on this channel, I teach you a series of beginner DJ Lessons and "How to DJ" tutorials. If you are looking for digital DJ tips or would like to know how to start DJing then why not consider Subscribing for weekly videos bit.ly/SUBSCRIB...

    Before using computers (90s), I would use breakbeat/breaks records and use the 33/45 buttons for transistions from 125-130ish bpms to DnB 165-180ish tempo.

    Interesting. I always think there’s only 2 ways to this kind of layering:
    - Double/half the bpm (all of you already know)
    - 1.5x the bpm (eg: when the 150bpm song gets to 6th bar, the 100bpm song will stand at it’s 4th bar)
    So yeah, this is pretty useful for me. Many thanks Phil ! You rock !

    Nice one to use in the set's. 3/4 is the half of 3/2 ((3/4)*2=6/4) so its baisicly duble the speed, thats why it works as well 😊

    Last saturday i played at a party and did too much acid, when it was peaking and i almost didnt know what buttons to press, i somehow forgot to tempo match my tracks and started doing some crazy transitions that i've never done before. at a certain point my mate came to me and asked me wtf is was doing and how i made it sound so incredible, 1 track was playing at 126 and the other at 129 (i think), and somehow while tripping i could calculate the rhythm but i had to adjust the jogwheel every 3 seconds to make it work. this literaly has never happened before, everyone said it was the best set i ever played, and i still dont understand how i did it ..
    this polyrhythmic thing is the closest i could find to what i was doing

    Heya @DJPhilHarris, I came across this video and it helped greatly! Thank you. And after seeing your explanation, now I can explain the math to you if you'd like. If you don't like, stop reading now. LOL.
    Essentially, the track that is playing is going to be in a Loop, we'll call this Loop 1 or L1 for short. Now imagine, the track you're introducing is also in a loop, L2 for short. The thing that is key to remember: you're trying to change the number of beats per bar and have it line up. If you re-imagine that the bar is a loop for track 2, that's the ticket. Meaning, you're trying to have the same bar phrasing but you're changing the time signature using loops. Don't get too caught up on this right now, it will make sense after the examples.
    Now for example, you want to go from say, 90bpm to faster. Well, what is a possible faster resulting bpm?
    So you know that for every 1.5 beats that Track1 (L1) is doing, you want the new, faster Track2 (L2) to have 2 beats. So with some simple ratio math:
    L1/1.5 = L2/2.
    Now solve for L2.
    When you solve and rearrange you get:
    4/3*L1 = L2.
    So for my example, (4/3)*90bpm = 120bpm. Essentially, by cramming 4 beats of the new track into 3 beats of the old track, you've overlaid 4/4 signature on top of 3/4 signature. This is musically correct, which is why it works.
    Keep in mind, this same ratio is exactly the same for the following values:
    2/1.5 = 4/3 = 8/6.
    So for track 1 you could set a 1.5, 3, or even 6 beat loop. And track 2 would have a corresponding loop timing of 2 beats, 4 beats or 8 beats.
    This all works in to slow down too. Now say you want to go from 128bpm down to a slower bpm. What is that bpm? Well, you want to have 4 beats in L1 and 3 beats in L2 to slow it down. So now you would do, 3/4*L1 = L2. Therefore, for a 128bpm slowdown, 3/4*128bpm = 96bpm. Therefore, pick Track2 to be about 96bpm.
    Okay, so now this same concept works for other values. On the RX3 controller, the odd options are 3/4, 1, 3/2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9 with the standard beat loops of 1/4, 1/2, 1, 2, 4, 8. So you can do this in most any combination that's reasonable. Again, don't get too caught up on this because these are some odd phrasings.
    For example, let's say your playing a mashup track at 80bpm and the dancefloor is dying. You're like, damn, ok, let's slam this back into dance-party bpm of like high 120's or low 130's or so. Well, the (4/3)*L1 trick is only gonna get you to about 107bpm. So now you're like, "damn, what do I do?!?!?!?!" So you want to increase the ratio even more! So let's see what cramming 8 beats from Track 2 into 5 beats of Track 1 does:
    (8/5)*80bpm = 8*80/5 = 640/5 = 128bpm. MONEY! Throw on some grimey tech house and GO! :D
    But wait, they're not diggin it and you're like, "Ok, let's blast em with some hardcore techno at about 150bpm". So you just need to eek out about 15% more speed, well, 9 is about 15% bigger than 8. So cool, you want to cram 9 beats of hardcore on L2 into 8 beats of techhouse on L1:
    (9/8)*128 = 144bpm.
    Then you keep them there for an hour and people are sweating, overly excited, and need a breather to go pee, chill for a bit, and tell their friends about their life-changing revelations. So you're like, "let's just toss on some dub reggae at half speed". So you want 2 beats of happy-hippy music for every 4 beats of hardcore:
    (2/4)*144bpm = 72bpm. Right in the suuuuuper chill pocket. maybe even tooooo chill. Anyway, yeah, the math is the same for the simple ones too, halving and doubling.
    Hope this helps!
    DJ Emerson (phx)

  • @danielgstohl9993
    @danielgstohl9993 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    It works out like this:
    For every 3 beats of the slow track, the fast track does 4 beats.
    You can check this by doing the same calculations as for the BPM. 3/3 is 1, 3+1 is 4
    Now, you're putting it on a 6 beat (1.5 bar loop)
    Remember, 3 slow beats is 4 fast beats. So 6 (3*2) slow beats take as long as 8 (2*4) fast ones.
    So the loop loops exactly every 2 bars of the fast track. That's neat and our monke brains like neatly aligned things, so it works out.

    • @danielgstohl9993
      @danielgstohl9993 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's actually simpler with a 3/4 or 3 beat loop. Then it just loops on every bar of the fast track

    • @DJPhilHarris
      @DJPhilHarris  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      But the loop length is 3/2. Oh I’m lost

    • @enjoyordie
      @enjoyordie 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      “So the loop loops exactly every 2 bars of the fast track”.
      That explains why it sounds good with a beatless loop, as only the first beat aligns.

  • @florian_dash_music

    Yes it is doable in the Rekordbox Software on your PC. But you need to change some settings under Controller: "Other" and then "Quantize" then set the Loop quantize from 1/1 to 1/2. 👍

  • @djvektormd
    @djvektormd 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    EDIT- Did a math mistake... You can do it easier (though may not be as easy in your head, but if you remember a few key BPMs you don't need to do the math). The ratio with these polyrhythmic mixing (CDJs have the built in loop for 3/4 and 5/4 but on a controller you can still do it manually). So to go up its BPM/0.75 and to go down you BPM*0.75. So if you want to go from a house BPM to DnB you can do 129/0.75=172bpm. To go down 172*0.75=129bpm. You can also achieve the cool "effect" Phil was doing with the upfader using the TRANS effect at 3/4 (and you can play with that effect by dropping to 1/2, etc to sound cool). This is (in my opinion) better sounding as its quantized (if you are using Pioneer CDJ/DJM900NXS2 or the V9- make sure the BPM is NOT blinking which means it is not sync'ed to your bpm and will sound like crap!. I have played at clubs that don't bother to connect the mixer with the pro link only the CDJs which means it has to "hear" the bpm through the internal mic of the mixer). *YOU can also as I saw below, mix in a track that is 1/2 of that BPM. So if you are playing at 172 you can easily beat match/mix in a song at 86 BPM. These together can sound clean and jump over a wide range of tempos without having to do gradually increasing TEMPO or a loop and bring the tempo up tricks...
    (ORIGINAL POST) So I would like to suggest things to make it easier. Just do your BPM/1.5. Saves some extra math step. So if you are going to fast-> slow (reverse of what you have at 2:35s) 164/1.5= 123. If you are wanting to go Slow to fast (or slower...) you can do the same exact equation 123/1.5=82. So you can mix it into a 82BPM song, OR (just like you have displayed on your deck) just like many high tempo songs, your software/deck will show it 1/2 the actual BPM. So just double it like you are doing in your video. So 82x2=164 BPM.
    Just makes the math a bit easier to do instead of doing multiple math operations. Cheers!

      Now I just think of it fast -> slow then divide by 1.5 and slow -> fast then divide by .75 - i think your first example 164/1.5 is supposed to be 109.3 - everything else spot on!

    • @djvektormd
      @djvektormd ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sadboolean8605 I realized I made a mistake. It is the ratios of 3/4 and 5/4 so its divide 0.75 and then mult by 0.75. Going to edit my example above. So if you start at say 129 BPM house and want to go to DnB or something. 129/0.75=172 and if you want to go back 172*0.75= 129. What Phil is doing with the up fader you can also accomplish by the TRANS effect set at 3/4. Then you can shorten/etc for a cool sounding effect.

Prep by doubling the bpm, find your loop and use in-out on those 3 beats, save loop as a cue and label with bpm to mix to (mine says PRL-170 for poly-rhythmic loop 170bpm) and change bpm of track back to original. Works like a champ.

    The slower song multiplied by 1.33 should give you the right answer. Instead of dividing by three and then adding it to the original song bpm you're shortening the sequence from 2 steps to 1.

    Very good, yet thats a double time transition because the 3/4 loop traduces to the same bpm as the new track. Try a surprise mix with a 3/4 polyrithm doing a 1 beat loop in a track and playing next a 33% faster track . Exemple: 90 bpm track -> 1 beat loop -> drop 120bpm track, the calculus is 90+(90/3)=120 or X+(X/3)=Z, X=song A bpm and Z= song B bpm. Keep it up! Realy like your videos.

    the use of the term polyrhythmic is incorrect from a theory standpoint

    Phil is saying he doesnt know why three quarters works as well. Just to confirm 3/4 and 3/2 are the beat divisions he uses.

    • @richardross2278
      @richardross2278 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes that's what he said. He also said that he isn't good at math. So he doesn't understand that 3/2 is 2x 3/4 so of course it works at half time.

    I think the most important question is how do you find using the CDJ3000’s? 😎🎧👍🏻

  • @rodrigoperaza
    @rodrigoperaza 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This can be done with any controller and/or software including Serato. I actually used to do it with Serato Scratch live and it’s simple. Don’t bust your heads with the math.
    1- DON’T USE THE AUTO LOOP FEATURE!!
    2-Find a track, that in the break has a vocal, synth or whatever sound that you feel that would work for you. Let call this track A
    3- Take a track or genre that you wish to mix into. Be it drum n bass, jungle, trap or whichever you want to mix into. Let’s call this track B
    4- Play the track A. Play it in at a bpm in which you would play it during your set. When you get to the sound that you want to loop for the transition, Set the loop in and out manually.
    5- Now make a loop in track B.
    6- Track A play the loop and edit the loop out. Shorten the loop until it matches rhythmically to Track B
    7- Save the loop that you created on Track A for you to use it whenever you’d like to do that transition. Then layer the next track over it.
    Play with it, it might take a few tries. But when you get it right you find that it’s easy. You can use the same technique to go from example techno to hip hop.

      Hmmmmm. Very difficult. I am more of a music fan than a technical dj fan so my favourite would be a music producer. That changes every two seconds. Listening to a lot of tech house at the moment, like fisher

    Basically it works because 124 x 3/2= 186 so put a 3/2 loop on a 124 BPM track the loop will play as a beat at 186 BPM if that makes sense 😂
