    Of course they are "goopy" inside. What are Irish lemon pies filled with? Powder?

    • @grimsoul0
      @grimsoul0 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      They might not of been expecting it because to the name Tastykake they were probably expecting a cake not a pie. As someone that's never heard of them before I figured it was going to be cakes.

    • @jeffnichols6448

      It clearly describes it as "pie" on the box.

    • @MinMaxxx
      @MinMaxxx 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think the “kakes “ in the name threw off their expectations. Imagine the company name was “Jelly Pies” and the boxes contained cupcakes. Just kinda misses what your brain pictures.

    • @N4T93
      @N4T93 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      In the UK we don't really eat jam pies, they tend to be with pieces like an apple pie or a tart so maybe Ireland is the same, but also the "jam" filling looks really thick and cornflour/flavourings based, rather than a thinner fresh egg/butter based lemon curd or fruit puree which is why it looks so unappealing and goopy to me.

    Back in their hayday, Tastykake could only be found in the southeast of Pennsylvania, New Jersey and northern Delaware. When they expanded their market to more of the Northeastern states they began adding more preservatives to lengthen shelflife and the tastiness suffered greatly. I'd gladly see their recipes return to the original formulas. I haven't had a Tastykake in years.

  • @KuroiHato69

    Back in the 90s when I went to London I bought bunch of Tastykake snacks with me. It was so much fun to share them with the people that I met. But these were before they put the 'baked' title on. At that time Lemon and Blueberry were my faves! But I also had some Tandykakes, Butterscoch Krimpets and Oatmeal-Raisin bars as well... Everyone liked the ones that I took over.

      For those of you in the rest of the world...... the people who live around Philadelphia have no taste buds. Even Cheese Steak tastes better the further away you get. A Cheese Steak in the rest of the Country has provolone, onions, and green peppers. Philly gives you some kind of fake yellow cheese whiz product. Oh, and Tastykakes are awful too. :-)

    Well this went slightly better than the last Tastykake tasting. I sent a box of various Philly area snacks to an Australian friend, who was living in Japan and included a Lemon Tastykake pie. First of all it was a challenge to make sure it got there before the expiration date was up sinceit's 10 days shipping to Japan from here. But she loved that pie, it was her favorite thing of the box.

    Facts--TastyKakes (the bakery is still in Philadelphia at the old Navy Yard) were part and parcel of a 1950s child's packed lunch (before the government-sponsored hot lunch program was instituted in most schools). The best ones--which had a great value as coin of the realm in a child's life back then, were the TastyKake Juniors--light yellow cake, chocolate mousse-like filling, and rich dark chocolate frosting. Since you didn't grow up back then, I'll tell you that no self-respecting child actually ATE the pie shell of a TastyKake pie. We sucked out the insides and tossed the crust.

    As a native of Philadelphia, where Tastykakes originated and is iconic, you'd have a lot of people up in arms by putting down Tastykakes. Practically every kid has grown up with them, for about the last 100 years and I've never met anyone who didn't love them and have eaten them since they got their first teeth. In Philadelphia, there pretty much considered a food staple.

    • @thechandlersrose
      @thechandlersrose 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lisa Heisey The formula for some of them has changed. They don't taste like the ones that I grew up eating in the '80's.

      @lisaheisey6168 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The Chandlers Rose I'm aware of that. I've lived in the Philadelphia area my entire life. But, even since the 80's, they haven't changed enough that the average Philadelphian doesn't still eat them and they certainly aren't bad, like they seem in the video. It probably has a lot to do with people outside of the US not being used to some of the ingredients. They always seem to complain about "artificial" flavors. But, people from other parts of the US tend to love Tastykake products, when they try them.

    • @thechandlersrose

    • @Rocco5Sacco
      @Rocco5Sacco 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      They're still made in Philly proper. The Naval Yard, as was, is just as much Philly as Nicetown {the world's most inaccurately named neighborhood}. They did used to be better, though. All that fancy packaging holds a pie half the size it used to be. It does enable you to send it around the world, of course. Tastykakes and pies have far more in the way of preservatives than they used to. Time was Tasty was unknown outside a 100 mile radius because they were so fresh they couldn't be shipped and had to be replaced quite frequently because they staled as easily as a home-baked product.

    The thing everyone seems to be missing here is that the special "goodness" that commenters talk about is sentiment, driven by reminiscence of childhood and after-school "treats". Objectively, Tastykakes are standard industrial-bakery products, neither better nor worse than any other industrial bakery's products.

    The best American mass produced handpies were Hostess pies. They're disgusting now, as my adult taste buds reject that much sugar, but were amazing as a kid. Plus in the 80's they probably just used good old fashioned lard and butter for the crust.

      Especially since placenta has the texture of cooked beef.
      It's a protein, so it coagulates when cooked and especially if it's chopped up finely can be fairly indistinguishable from ground beef. It would actually be fairly difficult to make it "goopy".

      David Roberts because they're fine to anyone without unrealistic expectations for a store bought shelf safe pie and not someone with a gigantic branch up their ass who snarks any time some obviously mass produced snack doesn't meet their expectations that all food (even pre packaged nonsense) should exclusively be be cooked to the highest chef standards and instead of being able to enjoy something for what it is (a quick, cheap snack) they decide their uneducated food critiques based solely on wanting to look cool and sophisticated somehow mean anything. Or something.

    Hey guys. I love your videos. Can you try Quebecois food next?
    My suggestions are as follows: poutine, guédilles, oreilles de Christ (crackling), ragout boulette (meatballs and gravy with potatoes), maple beans, Schwartz's smoked meat, and maple tarts (or lemon meringue).
    These foods are staples of Quebec culture, and I think it would be a delight to see the honest reactions of people from abroad.
    P.S.: cabbage rolls are also hugely popular among the masses, as a "dare food" for children, and are local "delicacy".

      Daemon To be fair all of our snacks are artificial, toxic, GMOs, unhealthy and do taste like crap compared to snacks in many European countries. Our chocolate is really awful when compared to just Britain's. American manufacturers spend most of their research money on figuring out how to cover up the cheapest crap ingredients with artifical flavoring to justify what they charge you. We do have incredible ingenuity in coming up with great combinations and new ideas in food, but shit ingredients are still going to taste like shit.
