    I've trained at a GJJ school and a competition school at the same time. GJJ is long run satisfaction. Like, when you're in your 4th stripe blue in GJJ you'll really appreciate the slow and steady approach they take. Competition schools CAN BE more gratifying if you have the body type (conditioning and strength) to keep up, however you are definitely more prone to injury if you don't know what you're doing. Both mindsets are good and suit different people. Keep training! That's the big thing!

      Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment! I completely agree-Gracie Jiu-Jitsu’s slow and steady approach really does offer long-term satisfaction, especially as you progress. I also understand how competition schools can be exciting and intense, but like you said, they require a different mindset and body conditioning.     Some of us at 59 years old do Gracie Jiu Jitsu because we love being able to have fun rolling and learning while getting exercise without getting injured ! :)

      Amazing to hear that you're still enjoying Jiu Jitsu! One of the largest reasons I started was because my older brother practices. He is twelve years older than me. If you have not heard of the channel "The Art of Skill" consider checking it out. He has multiple videos on this topic. :)

    Good to see you pick up a martial art always think they do wonder's for your mental and physical health. Structured curriculum is great, not a jiu jitsu practicer personally but I think knowing how to grapple is always a useful tool. I do karate and kickboxing achieving a black belt in both Karate (10 years) Kickboxing (8 years), sparring isn't really done on a preliminary test but more an eye test on competency. It's always supervised and light(unless someone is practicing for a fight at which point they are in with people who know to push a bit harder), which I think works pretty well as beginners are more likely to start swinging for the fences as opposed to technical sparring so often partnering them with someone skilled who can take the power down significantly is a good learning experience until they get accustomed. I think all martial arts are good for self defence but I don't think it's the be all end all, having knowledge of one can leave you lacking in another which can be detrimental in real life scenarios as most people (especially those looking for trouble) tend to have semi competency since the rise of popularity in mma, the ufc and specifically gordan ryan's no gi jiu jitsu, so I believe having knowledge of most if not all martial arts is necessary (specifically martial arts that act at varying distances, since you learn what the other is looking for) for self defence. Regardless I think performing any martial arts is good for both mind and body and I congratulate you on your weight loss journey. Major props my man and I hope you made some awesome friends on the way. Keep kicking ass!

      Great to hear from you! Two black belts; that is amazing! That's extremely impressive. Thank you for your insight on the preliminary test, what you describe is what I'd expect from most places. I definitely do not subscribe to the idea that BJJ is the end all, be all. As I continue to lose weight I want to look into boxing and wrestling to strengthen my stand up game so I am at the very least competent. I'm very weak in these areas and believe some training would do be some good.
