  • A look at how and why Ryan Condal and Sara Hess ruined Daemon in Season 2 of House of the Dragon. It's a departure from George RR Martin's Daemon Targaryen in Fire and Blood.

      „In the episode” commentary is the worst thing, why do they even do that? If you’re a good writer, it’s not needed. Just let the viewers have their own interpretation and let people discuss instead of giving us the answers, even Martin doesn’t do that and only he has a right to do that.

      You think he wouldn't lol? Daemon was happy with Rhaenyra when they were equals and she was bearing his kids but now he's in a position where one of them is going to become the regent and the other the consort, he loves her but this is Daemon if one of them is going to be in charge he wants it to be him, just like he loved Viserys but when his brother became king he couldn't handle it because to him by all the laws of Valyrian culture he should the head of the family he's older, he has a bigger dragon, he wields Dark sister, and has been to war where as Rhaenyra just has the stale oaths of some Andal lords. Plus if Rhaenyra is regent that means Jace is the heir you think Daemon wants a strong bastard on the throne over his own son?
      And it's not like he's being that unrealistic if he is the one to kill Aegon and Aemond and takes the throne for himself chances are everyone will fall in line and in Daemons mind Rhaenyra will respect this and for avenging her father she will take her place as his loyal wife and then their pure valyrian offspring will inherit the throne. That is basically everything Daemon has ever wanted and if he plays his cards right he could get it all of course he's considering it lmao. Did you guys not watch the show?

    Back in S1 I took issue with Daemon murdering his wife and was met with comment after comment that Daemon was a misogynist and a killer so of course killing his first wife and choking the second made sense. Someone can be cruel and a misogynist but still loyal to their family. All because Daemon had contempt for his first wife doesn't mean he caved her head in.

      @ΚατερίναΤσιτσιμπίκου หลายเดือนก่อน +15

      This was the first blow for me too. This was a show invention and I'm sick and tired of the unreliable source argument. In the books he's in the Stepstones when it happens and his wife lingered for a week before dying, there's no way she wouldn't name him the culprit, but no, they had to depict him as a wife killer and an abuser. Being unfaithful and womanizing is not the same with abusing your spouse, and when I read the book I never thought of Daemon as a misogynist, more like philanderer and lustful. I'm pretty sure they're going to screw God's Eye too...

He also trusted Ryan Condal with the the lore. When the primary work was being done on Season 2 he was busy writing scripts for The Knight of the Seven Kingdom's series. Then just before Season 2 aired George had a lengthy blog post criticizing adaptations that tried to "make it their own" and ruined the original story. At the time people thought he was talking about shows like The Rings of Power, but he was really warning us about Season 2.

  • @ForzaMara
    @ForzaMara หลายเดือนก่อน +10

    It's like Hess and Condall went to the Rian Johnson school of writing. Daemon has essentially become the Jake Skywalker of HotD. If the visions had been about him reconciling his violent past and regrets for things he did and people he harmed. No mentions of wanting any throne. I would've gotten behind it. Just like I would've gotten behind Jake Skywalker losing so much faith in the Jedi, that he became a hermit. If done right. But for some reason they either don't know how to get them right, or they enjoy getting them wrong to destroy certain fan favourite characters. Hess's comments in season one got me so worried for Daemons portrayal. I'm worried, that even now, they'll pull a Rian Johnson style, "subverting expectations" and give his big moment to someone else. And rather than using the changes to the Nettles story line to help father and daughter bond. They'll find something more disturbing for him to do.
    My only consolation in this, is that Rhaenyra was depicted badly as well. Although her bad depiction was unintentional. Trying to give us a girl boss and failing so hard, because they don't know how to depict a competent leader.

    • @reelworld1
      @reelworld1  หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      That's what so ironic about it all. They tried to make Rhaenyra perfect and peace loving, and it made her look weak and stupid in the face of what was going on. Look at the early seasons of Game of Thrones and how well defined the women were there, because they were showed as being as flawed as the men. You can understand Catelyn's desire for revenge over Bran, but her actions lead to even bigger problems when she kidnaps Tyrion. Here Lucerys is killed by Aemond and Rhaenyra is still seeking peace.

    The "writers" kinda forgot that Daemon's key redeeming quality is loyalty to his family. (Yes, it's a D&D GoT S8 reference.)
    I had no issues with S2 E1 and E2. Him having a fight with Rhaenyra over Blood and cheese is believable enough. But what follows is just nuts. You want us to believe that he abandones his wife and children to go on a guest AGAINST them for the Iron Throne? Which he could have taken from under Viserys while he was still the heir (for 10 years)?! And then the entire "power-hungry traitor Daemon" storyline gets aborted because... A witch told him to touch a tree.
    And Rhaenyra just... Forgives him. At least according to the showrunners commentary on S2 E8. Emm... You had a giant fight. You said you couldn't trust him. Simon just told you he suspects treachery. And this is it???
    What. The. F*ck.
    I have read fanfics 10 times better than this.
    This is borderline unrecoverable character assassination. The only one which consoder worse is Alicent.

    • @reelworld1
      @reelworld1  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah, I really didn't see that one coming with Alicent at the end. I thought it was just going to be a repeat of their stupid meeting at King's Landing with her leaving like Rhaenyra did, but to give up her family like that was infuriating. And they even had her ask Rhaenyra to run away with her. It lost any semblance of being a story based on the Dance of the Dragons then.

    Daemon went from GOAT status from a single battle sequence slicing up more men than Darth Vader did in a hallway and Qimir / The Stranger did in a forest into becoming Theon Greyjoy aka Reek in Season 2. I just finished watching S2 of Game of Thrones, and Theon was already pretty pathetic before Ramsay Bolton turned him into Reek. Theon tried acting tough only to look pathetic.
    Daemon is supposed to be the most dangerous man in Westeros during this time. In the book, Aemond said his uncle was the only one to fear, not his older half-sis. But in S2, we see him getting dunked on by a fat, old man, a witchy bastard, and a little kid. It’s so contrasting to who we saw from S1 slicing Vaemond’s head off to have his Will Smith’s “get my wife’s name out of your fucking mouth” moment. Peak badass Daemon was from 1x1 and 1x3. Then he falters like every cool character from Game of Thrones.
    Remember how great Tyrion was from GOT S1-S4? I just watched the scene when he said a speech in the Battle of Blackwater to inspire the soldiers. Then what happened after S4? He became Dany’s worst hand. I saw maybe 15 minutes of badass Daemon so far…..
    1x1 Slaughtering criminals as the commander of the City Watch and his jousting beating Gwayne Hightower but losing to Ser Crispin because he started to celebrate by turning around.
    1x3 Last 10 minutes in the Stepstones killing 15-16 guys, only getting hit by two arrows, and then decapitating the Crabfeeder.
    1x7 Blocking Criston to have Rhaenyra and Alicent settle it on their own.
    1x8 Beheading Vaemond which lasted 3 secs.
    In S2, Daemon is tripping balls. Having fantasies of banging his mother. Pouting. Crying. Saying he’s the king and Simon says the King…. consort. Getting punked by a character named after a Sesame Street character who lives in a trash can. I did find the Daemon and Simon interaction to be quite funny. They both added a comedic duo element to it. And then when Oscar became OSCAR the Grouch, I wanted to pat that kid on the back for schooling Daemon.
    I really hope with the added scenes of Rhaenyra and Alicent meeting each other, the HBO showrunners can create a new scene between Daemon vs. Aemond and Criston. In the book, Daemon never interacts with Criston ever again. Their last interaction was in 1x7 in Driftmark. Wouldn’t it be cool if we see them fight with swords? And Daemon never interacts with Aemond until the Gods Eye. I want to see one sword fight between Daemon vs. those two.
    Now if Daemon never does another badass thing ever again, he would still be at the top or near the top for me. And he seems to be on the most popular dragon in the show. Drogo’s biggest highlight was cutting that dude’s tongue. Oberyn was actually beating The Mountain but he still got killed by him. Of course, we know Daemon is going to have at least one more badass moment before he exits the story. His 1998 Michael Jordan shot. Not many characters have an ending as epic as Daemon’s in any lore.
    GRRM loves Daemon so much, he really didn’t want to kill him and gave him a Houdini escape. Daemon didn’t lose an eye like Aemond or Lord Bloodraven. Didn’t lose a cock like Varys, Theon, and Aegon II. Didn’t lose a hand like Jaime. He committed war crimes but not as often as Daenerys. He died intact. Watching Jaime lose a hand, get kicked in the mud, and drink horse piss is just sad. This doesn’t happen to Daemon at all.
    Maegor, Rhaenyra, Breakspear, and Daenerys all got shitty endings for a Targaryen. Daemon gets the GOAT ending.

    I get being confused as to why people would consider Daemon boyfriend material; after his actions in the S1 Finale of Rings of Power, it really bothers me how many people on Twitter STILL think Sauron would be a good match for Galadriel and that the show is actively working towards them being romantically involved. But As we've seen in the trailers, Sauron still very much has his agency, and he's really leaning into the villainy and having some fun at the same time. Daemon, as you said, lost all his agency and humor after one night in a bed made of weirwood.

      Daemon is a stereotypical bad boy, Sauron is an unrepentant lieutenant of the literal devil, and older than creation itself.
      There is no way in hell that Sauron or Galadriel would have anything but mutual suspicious and distrust between them

    Because they have cut the other character meant to make his true arc happen, so instead he wastes his time in harrenhall with Alys, who in the book charms and whatever else didn’t work on him , if he ever met her at all. He claimed harrenhall easily and was not sway by this mess. Now the war has just begun and he’s already lost all ambition and will just follow whatever to make the stupid prophecy, when in the book it’s not until he’s in maidenpool hunting vhagar with nettles that a terrible action by rhaenyra drives him to lose all ambition, becomes a better man and finishes his arc. With cutting this character and sara and Ryan trying to make it up, we get stuck with their poorly quality writing instead of GRRM actual story

    I hate when they describe GRRM's characters as 'grey'. They're not. There's an emergence to their actions and behaviors, one that he traces to their biology, psychology and life experiences. It is also what makes his world infinitely interesting and feels 'historic' - the drama emerges out of the characters, but they pursue life in a structure set by the world. Even in the beginning, there's a heavy weight of the recent past.

    This is in complete contradiction to the core of his character and really sucks. He's like a Bojack Horseman or a Walter White to me. Complete and utter @$$hole but we're invested in his story anyway lol. He didn't need to be toned down or redeemed, he's supposed to be a jerk.

      In the book he evolves a bit after Rhaenyra goes off the rails as Queen, but that is largely due to Nettles influence and Daemon defying Rhaenyra toward the end of the story.

    I don’t like Daemon, but I hate what they did to his character. While I hated him, he was so damned entertaining to watch in season one. He was almost a 1:1 of book Daemon. Condal and Hess ruined him. There’s no going back from their brain-dead writing choices in season three.

    • @reelworld1

      Yes, also any evolution Daemon does toward becoming a different person is largely due to Nettles, who was written out of the show. So that arc is gone. They couldn't even give him the King's Landing victory from the book, but stupidly have Alicent just hand it to Rhaenyra.

    You mistake intent. Daemon is not ruined. His scenes in Harrenhall were part of his redemption arc. He needed to confront his selfish desires vs his part to protect his family legacy. He needed to confront the fact that everytime when things get too tense or emotional he runs away. We have seen him do this repeatedly. In episode 7, he realised that though he desires the throne, he does not want the responsibility of sitting the throne because he is all about fighting and glory (Robert Baratheon is an example of this through his drinking and whoring even going on hunts every so often because he got depressed sitting the throne). So when Viserys asks him if he still wants the throne, Daemon answers sincerely and says no. So obviously, since he was not a Green fan, his army would fall under Rhaenyra since he said he no longer wants to rule and those visions just amplified the part he has to play in the overall narrative to get his blood line to succeed. His loyalty was always to his family and so he would've pledged the army to Rhaenyra anyway even if he didn't have visions. The scene with him and that small council member were intently written so that Simon would misinterpret the conversation for potential treason being committed. So Daemon's loyalty would never waiver. He has a tendency of being tempted but all goes back to his loyalty to his family that is why after he won and was named "King" he went back to his brother and gave him that throne as a gift instead. So he would've done the same to Rhaenyra even without those vision. So he is not ruined at all. Just his scenes in Silent hill dragged but it is understandable given the financial troubles HBO is facing and the decision by Discovery to cut costs. There simply was no money to film more action stuff because originally Daemon was intended to take Harrenhall by force and would get injured hence his dreams but execs ordered that changed and that is why Episode 9 The Fall of KL and the season finale Episode 10 The Battle of The Gullet were cut because the season was originally intended for 10 episodes and cut to 8, and with writer's strike, writers could not adjust the normal build up episode Into proper finale. So the odds were against them from the start.

      Daemon's biggest moment in Dance of the dragon is Fall of kings landing. he tricked both aemond and cole, sneek past them joined hands with Rhaenyra and dragonseeds,took kingslanding with the help of Gold cloaks without bloodshed within in a day for his wife. This is such a iconic moment in entire Fire and blood,and huge tactical victory for Rhaenyra and black. now the show changes it and try to give this moment to that useless alicent.she opened the gate so Rharnyra takes the throne. why the writers constantly undermine his agency or try to steal his iconic moment for some other characters. IN F&B Daemon was rhaenyra/blacks biggest strength until his death.now just compare the show, he is just damn infantry man thats it. my friends(not book readers) are making fun of me,because i told them daemon is a key man and big assert to Rhaenyra before this season. now they think daemon is just a useless for blacks and Rhaenyra is powerful even without him. they even think Mysaria and messy girls are blacks biggest strength😭 thats the opinion of casual non book readers views on daemon. I am sure Martin will never going to praise show Daemon as he was better than my daemon from F&B.

      @@gopalkrishnan3196 Yes, in the book when the gold cloaks saw Daemon on Caraxes they turned against the Greens. Here Alicent is intentionally offering up her entire family (aside from Helaena) and opening the gates, which the real Alicent would never do. She was instrumental in trying to defend Kings Landing. The taking of KL was one of the moments I was most looking forward to see, with all the dragons descending on the city, but now it's nothing and they even stupidly spoiled the taking of it in the finale.
