F14 Back Stories and History.
The 2 seater Grumman F-14 Tomcat was the US Navy's air superiority fighter, tactical reconnaissance platform and its fleet defence interceptor . The F-14 replaced the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II in 1974 and was replaced in 2006 by the Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet. It appears in all Top Gun video games including Top Gun: Guts and Glory, Top Gun: Combat Zones and Top Gun: Hard Lock.
The aircraft first flew as far back as 1970 and deployed from Navy carriers in 1974 and was ultimately cancelled in 2006 with the advent of the U.S. Navy’s F/A-18 Super Hornet. The F-18 was faster, more maneuverable, and more high-tech than the Tomcat, and emerged as a new generation of carrier-launched fighters.
The F-14s initially designed to counter Russian MIG fighters during the Vietnam War, and were then used against Iraqi planes by the Iranian Air Force during the Iran-Iraq war; they reportedly shot down at least 160 Iraqi aircraft while only 12 to 16 Tomcats were destroyed, according to a 2006 Air & Space Magazine report.
The F-14s are still used by the Iranian Air Force, and some have raised a question as to whether they were retired prematurely by the U.S. Navy. This raises an interesting question regarding technical progress. While there is clearly value in human decision making faculties adding to air attack with two-seater planes using a Naval aviator to support the pilot, the advent of newer sensor technology may have supplanted the need for a second person in the plane.
The maiden was awesome, and the second flight was even better, as Jonathan will show this week. He was behind the camera allot so that will be fun for all watching. It was such a pleasure to meet Jonathan and trusty bent screwdriver🤣🤣
Thanks Kelly! Lots of video to come! Tuesday is F14 Maiden!
Absolutely love the cradle!!!! Well done Sir
Thanks James!
Good Job! You're so patient and methodical. The results are worth the effort.
Thanks Ron!
Wow! Awesome! Its been a fun follow. @26:28 Those are called "Glove Pylons" LOL.. its funny you said drive "down" to Montana. I'm used to saying drive "up" since Montana is our farthest northern state, but I remember you are in Canada, so makes sense.. speaking of Canada, and RC flying, Alex Lifeson (RUSH) is an avid RC flyer and has a pilot's license to fly real planes too.
Thanks for watching along! I heard that about Alex a few month ago. Was very shocked! 😊
That is an awesome plane. Love the build.
Thanks Christopher!
What a beautifal airplane. I am honored that I got to witness the maiden. Excellent
Thanks so much! Pleasure to have met you!
Jonathan what a sweet long Build. Thanks for taking us with you.
Thanks Greg!
Wow!! that is a beautiful job. I am very impressed with how detailed and perfect your work is. my congratulations for all you do for this fantastic hobby.
Thanks so much Vincent! I appreciate the kind words!
What a great build - very complex, can’t wait to see the flight video.
Thanks Sal! MAiden video live now!
Awesome! Great job, your building & trouble shooting skills are amazing. The F-14 is my all time favorite fighter, what you built looks amazingly beautiful and true to the real one. Wishing you all the best on the maiden flight and can’t wait to watch the video of this plane flying, thank you. 🙏
Thanks for your kind words! Appreciate it!
What a great journey this was, can't wait to see the video of the maiden flight. Sure wish the gear was not a concern, seems to me the manufacturer would do something about that. You have done what you can to make it reliable as possible but if I were the owner/pilot of this expensive plane I would not want to worry about the gear cycling properly every time I wanted to fly it. The up side for the owner is that he knows you have tried everything and can be assured that it is the best it can possibly be. Super job buddy!!!!!!
Thanks Hank. Yea it's disappointing that skymaster don't make any changes/improvements. Thanks!
AWESOME JOB
Thank you! Cheers!
Looking forward to the Wed flight I can't wait for it I am just a 64 old kid
HAHA. Thanks Thomas!
Really can’t wait to see her fly
You really do amazing work love the attention to detail
Thanks for all your videos 👍
Thanks Jim!
I hope the maiden was success today! What a journey! Phew!
Success and maiden video live.
Can't wait to see her flying .... nice job Dave should be very excited about it
Thanks!
Great series, gorgeous aircraft and can't wait to see it flying.
Thanks a lot!
Excellent!
Many thanks!
I just saw pictures and a video of this Jet at the Kalispell MT club. I was hoping to make it up to that fly-in but just couldn't. Keep up the good work!
Thanks. MAiden video just went live.
Awesome videos.
Thanks!
Can't wait to see it fly! That was one heck of a build! Awesome work as always.
Thanks!
A massive amount of tweaking. Good work. 👍 I'm amazed at how complex these aircraft are. 😊
Many thanks!
NICE PRO-ject!!
Thank you! 😊
Good job man!!!!!!!
Thank you!
Such a sick build, awesome!!!!
Thanks a ton!
Great Video and build series!
Thanks!
🤩…wow what a project 👍 thank you for your explanation Jon and taking us with your thoughts and why you’ve done things differently sometimes 🙏 All the best for the maiden and cheers from Munich, Sven🍺
Thanks Sven! Maiden video now live!
Hope the maiden goes smoothly! Just imagine building a BUFF (B-52) at the same scale. Thinking about making THAT landing gear work properly makes my head hurt.
Thanks! Maiden video just went live! Huge Sucess!
Are you sure you are not getting blow by in one of the air cylinders? It will come out of the vent like its the valve but its actually the internal O ring. I love the stand you made for it
Doesn't matter. It is now used on the canopy and works fine. Thanks!
Do you use standard servo wiring or extensions? Or some special wire?
Only powerbox wire and servo ends. Typically Ashlok Connectors for surface connections.
✈🙂
😊
🔥🔥🔥👍
😊
I think I saw an extra screw on the bench. Uh-oh.
HAHA. Nice!
need to take off the grim reapers fuel tank!!!
I saw the same thing. It has the wrong drop tanks on it for this paint configuration.
Meh. They work. Can also run them with label on the inside. Primary purpose is they are there for a gear up landing.
I'm curious about something with your landing gear. When I watched you cycle them, I noticed the nose gear extends and retracts nice and slowly. But the mains seem to slam down. And all the gear doors seem to slam open and closed. Would you add any restrictors to slow everything down to a more scale extension/retraction? Also, would you consider electric retracts over pneumatic?
Front nose is very simple system. No rotation so installing restrictors is easy and it works. on the mains, function is more important than form. With gear like this there is too much going on in the mains to go electric.
Good morning this is Friday is today a good day for a maiden ?
Maiden complete and video now live!
Why is one light on the rudders facing front and the other light facing backwards
Not sure. Thats the way the full scale is.
So both lights should be facing forwards or backwards

LOTS of PUSH!!
@@thelightersideofrc I want you to try it
After all of your problems with the air system.....apparently you have not discovered the bullet proof world of electric doors, retracts and brakes.....I .quit using air a couple of years ago and would never go back.........Really a cool plane over all though, congrats.
oh i'm very aware of the electric world Shel. on large complex aircraft like this Electric is NOT an option. Gear is too complex and too much stuff working together. NOW of course anything is possible but would require unlimited funds.
Would be cool to see you do an SU-27/35 or a Mig 29. Definitely don't support what Russia has done to the Ukraine but they do build some pretty cool fighters. 😎
I would like an SU for my next personal aircraft. Maybe in the future!
@@thelightersideofrc That would be awesome the migs are cool but I personally like the SUs myself as well.
Do you have any videos flying the planes you build?
Yea lots! There is a Flying playlist on my channel and most are there.
