  • Between friends and commenters asking, I have been persuaded to cover Hanging Tree. But to protect against Copyright claims I have made minor adjustments to the lyrics to fit into the theme of the Second Civil War.
This is a pretty spooky song which is fitting for the month of Spooktober, When I was working on it and adding the ambiance I was asked the pertinent question of "Are you trying to garner the attention of 3 Letter Agencies?" To which my answer was: "What are they gonna do?" Well we will find out😅! Besides, I've done a song for Dixie, and at least one song implied for other regions with one coming up for the Rockies, so why leave Vermont and Connecticut out? Hopefully Fictional Politics that'll get me in trouble aside, I hope y'all enjoy!
    Lyrics Below.
You'll note the beginning starts with a large amount of lore text that is going much too fast to read, it's intended for to catch your eye and bring you here, but you could also pause the video and read if you'd rather.
    Lore:
See stickied comment for the text dump! There's character Limits here!
Outside of the lore dump, the idea behind this song, is that this is the unofficial anthem of the New England or Northeastern Rebels fighting against the Federal government who successfully suppressed secession elections for their states.
    Lyrics:
    Are you, are you
    Coming to the tree
    They strung up a man
    They say he murdered three.
But Strange things did happen here
    No stranger would it be
    If we met at midnight
    At the hanging tree.
    Are you, are you
    Coming to the tree
    A dead man called out
    For his love to flee.
    Strange things did happen here
    No stranger would it be
    If we met at midnight
    At the hanging tree.
    Are you, are you
    Coming to the tree
But I told you to run,
I’m sure we'll both be free.
    Strange things do happen here
    (I) Guess no stranger would it be
    That we meet at midnight
    In the hanging tree.
    Are you, are you
    Coming to the tree
    Wearing a necklace of rope,
You’re Side by side with me.
Some Strange things do happen here
    No stranger would it be
    If we met at midnight
    At the hanging tree.
    Are you, are you
    Coming to the tree
Strange men they came with guns
    To capture you and me.
    Strange things do happen here
    No stranger would it be
For us to meet at midnight
    In the hanging tree.
    Are you, are you
    Coming to the tree
    If don’t stand up,
Then you’ll end up just like me
But Strange things do happen here
    No stranger would it be
    If you meet at midnight
    At the hanging tree.
    Are you, are you
    Coming to the tree
    We all now stand up
And soon we will be free.
    Strange things do happen here
    No stranger would it be
Than to string them up at midnight
    In the hanging tree.

As Spooktober is well on it's way This fun song features Haunting ambience, as well as haunting imagery. I hope that the style isn't too jarring for folks after the tone/pace of Bella Ciao, or the Irish songs, but in any circumstance, I've gotten lots of requests for this one. The only thing I worry about in hindsight is drawing the ire of spooky 3-letter agencies. I hope y'all enjoy!
    Lore:
Immediately after the Secession Crisis began, several state legislatures voted to leave the Union. Many votes succeeded, leading to the independence of Texas, Dixie, The Great Plains, and much of the Rocky Mountains. The states where votes failed suffered from allegations of rigged elections that prompted violence and protests across the Midwest, Southwest, and New England
The National Guard of many states was called in to deal with the protestors and rioters. After a little over a month, multiple US Army and Marine units were recalled from abroad and stationed on American soil under the Insurrection Act. Riots and unrest became uncontrollable in many urban centers leading to effective "Quarantine Zones," where the Federal Government decided to cut its losses and abandon trying to enforce law or order. Unsurprisingly, this decision was neither a quick nor well-thought-out course of action, and many "Unrest Zones" merely bred more unrest elsewhere.
After the Secession vote in Virginia turned out inconclusive, many counties in the state decided to leave the shackles of the Federal Government and join the Appalachian Block that was forming around West Virginia and Kentucky. The inconclusive vote was used as a pretense for the deployment of the US Armed Forces to "Liberate" rebel parts of Virginia that "disregarded legitimate election results." The result has been a conflict that is drawing in the Dixie Block and Stirred unrest among the nominally loyal Midwest States.
But with US forces finally off their streets and aiming guns at someone else, the dissidents in the Northeast, subject to Martial Law and brutal crackdowns just months ago, are fed up and finally see hope in taking action again. Many Urban Centers were locked down; so the Northeast Rebellion began in the low-density counties and thrived in the underground of Boston, Concord, and Philadelphia. With anger targeted towards politicians seen as traitors and the still fresh memories of brutal occupation, Unrest brews while humming a familiar tune...

Wow. I started reading this with the intent of it being generic _America upset/ South rebels again_ . By the end, I found myself actually invested in the lore and politics. Fantastic world building, very well thought through.

The senario behind these songs are very well thought out and fit very well with the "9 nations of north america" theory that has real effects on our realworld politics.

Tbh normally I’m not a fan of Whatifalthis (mostly because he’s a bit….odd with some of his claims and how he relies on Great Man Theory often) but honestly his 9 nation videos were decent and got me thinking about it a lot more.

That's what I'm saying I went back and read the backstop in the vid and it's bone chillingly similar to what's been going on in regards to the Texas situation currently happening and the governors who have signed backing tekas and saying they would be willing to send national guard troops to the boarder

The build up to the integration of Janissa's vocals was perfectly executed! Great cover.
As far as concern about the alphabet people should go, I'm sure Phillip Dick would've been in a lot of trouble if lore were illegal. You should be totally safe under the 1st amendment. They haven't gone after me for any of the sketchy things I have done.

insane level of quality. I love how this sounds so much more subdued and somber than a lot of your other songs, lacking the sort of underlying energy they usually have. there is no talk of glorious revolution or freedom, just the simple demonstrative tragedy of a man hanging from a tree.
It'd be awesome to see you adapt some old Florida folk songs, since my home state has something of a rebellious streak nowadays similar to Texas and some great tunes to back up that sentiment. I could 100% imagine songs like The Everglades or Tallahassee Lassie being adapted into quasi-separatist chants, or maybe even Cuban songs like El Chacal (discussing Che Guevara's tyranny and bloodlust) could be adapted to English and reworked to talk about the tyranny of the federal government in this timeline.
    regardless, amazing work as usual!

    *Background*
It’s been five, no six years since the government left the west coast retreated east Mississippi River, and north of the Mason-Dixon Line. They said it was because of the riots. But I know it’s because they had the strongest power base in that region.
It only took a month for the West Coast Coalition form. A little less than a month for Southern Plutocracy to form. Then Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Louisiana, and Arkansas to form a confederation of states known as “The Free States of America”.
The center of the nation is a no-man’s-land of chaos and destruction. All the way from Utah, to Missouri and as far north as Montana and Minnesota is just infested with warlords and criminals.
It’s up to you, a lone Sheriffs Deputy, or mercenary, or survivor to bring the former United States back together. Whether be it by peace and cooperation, or by blood and terror.
    *Factions*
West Coast Alliance: An Alliance of west coast states and regions that formed after the election of 2028. States that formed are: California, Oregon, Nevada, Arizona, and parts of Washington, and Idaho. They believe in equality in everything. Leans towards socialism, and Libertarianism.
Free States: A confederation of southern states that try to hold onto old American ideals of “Equality, Freedom, and Democratic-Republicanism”, but lately has been straying from there ideals.
Southern Plutocracy: Multiple Millionaires fled south during the election due to the more relaxed labor laws. Uses a mix of mercenary, and former military forces, as well as militarized police forces to keep its population in line.
Remnants of America: Remnants of the former United States of America has been held up in the Northeast, and as far west as Wisconsin and as far south as Cairo Kentucky. Means to re-conquer the Continent of America by force if they have to.
    *Ideology*
WCA: Is mostly based off of a blend of socialistic-libertarianism. Representative Parliamentary Committee.
Free States: Based off of Representative-Democracy. Has three branches of government; An Upper House(Legislative), a Lower House(Judiciary), and President(Executive).
SP: Is a Representative-Authoritarian form of government that prioritizes the needs of the wealthy over the needs of the poor. Uses force to get what they want.
US remnants: Is a flawed Representative-Democracy that prioritizes the needs of those that have power to keep it. Has become more authoritarian the longer they don’t conquer the continent for a second time.
    *Governmental Philosophy*
WCA: Wants to have everyone become the same economic class, and makes those that oppose them “Disappear”. UN claims that they violate several civil rights, and international laws. Tho none have been proven.
SP: Believes that everyone different from their beliefs are inferior to them. Has strayed close to xenophobic-racism. Has been proven to commit warcrimes, and use terroristic acts to get what they want.
Free States: Want to re-unite as much of the former USA as they possibly can via peaceful means. Has a more modest view of those whom differ from the norm(IE, they dgaf about race, religion, or gender identity to a point). Tries its best to uphold to international standards to warfare. Has been accused of crimes against humanity by the Southern Plutocracy.
US Remnants: Wants to make the US whole again, but only to those whom they deem worthy of it.(IE become overwhelmed by old world ideals of race, gender, and religion). Has been accused of war crimes by the Free States.
    *Contested Areas*
Mississippi River: Areas along the Mississippi River are contested by Free State forces, Southern Plutarch forces, and far-western US government remnants.
Sonoran Desert: Cast areas of the Sonoran Desert are contested by Free State, and WCA forces over water ways. Heavy fighting along river ways, and damns. Seems to be in a gridlock.
Central US: the Central United States has become a “Dark Zone” of forces. Typically only warlords, and zelatiouse armies fight over scraps of medicine, food, and water. Rumors have it that a Christo-Fascist force is gaining ground and wiping out warlords. Might be a problem later.
    *Creator Comments*
Hope y’all like what I’ve cooked up here. Feel free to ask questions about it, and to chat amongst yourselves about it too! Also I don’t wish for this to happen, I just wanted to make a funny haha scenario.
