  • The market for non-fungible tokens, or NFTs, is soaring, reaching $10.7bn in the third quarter of 2021. For the art world it's a new frontier, where ownership of digital assets is encrypted on the blockchain. The FT talks to artists, auction houses and collectors about how NFTs are bringing in new buyers and setting records for sales of digital works, and we follow a painter making his first NFT. In Japan, an elementary school student's drawing has reached a million USD in worth because of NFT. It's a lifechanger for anyone in this world who are extremely lucky, and understand the game.

    This echoes a bit Japanese businessmen's art shopping spree in the late 80s and may be a symptom of a bubble in the main asset classes, not just digital art

    Talk to the guy that bought a tulip bulb for $10,000 during the Holland tulip bubble.

    Here we have a spectacular reincarnation of a Tulip Bubble.

    • @WhichDoctor1
      @WhichDoctor1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Except the tulips are infinitely copiable, so even before you've paid out tens of millions for the rarest tulip, anyone else who wants it has already been able to right-click and save it to have for themselves. All you are buying is the theoretical idea of "ownership" with none of the practical benefits.

    The supply of these NFT is increasing, making them basically worthless in the future

      There are thousands of tangible arts being created every day but why do I see some going for millions if “increasing supply makes them worthless” is true

    If you ever tipped a toe into the "NFT community" as a normal person - you will be outright disgusted by the way these people talk and behave. And this "Lisa Ledson" person is exactly what you will meet... urgh.

    I hoped NFTs would create a more inclusive art market, bring those insane prices down to earth and make art accessible for more people. For now it just seems like we are seeing more of those insane prices with cryptomaniac intentions behind

    I am struggling to understand what problem they are solving. If I buy a Rolex, I get a receipt acts as proof of purchase and as a warranty. So why on earth do I need it to be nft’d. I’ll welcome this fad as an alternative conspicuous consumerism

    • @Gordon__brown
      @Gordon__brown 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      you literally said it yourself - you want proof of purchase... thats what the token is, why is it any different from anything else?

    • @WhichDoctor1
      @WhichDoctor1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Gordon__brown But the are proofs of purchase for things that can be infinitely duplicated for free. So you are left holding the receipt proving you own the thing that everyone else also possesses. It takes the concept of ownership and divorces it from the idea that you have something that other people don't. After that what does "ownership" even mean?

    • @MayorSom
      @MayorSom 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Gordon__brown There’s no need for it as that’s already been solved. There are already mechanisms and infrastructure in place to ensure a proof of purchase. If I need to find out whether or not my Stone Island or OFF-White (RIP Virgil Abloh, cancer store him from us 😣), I’d go to Certilogo then scan the qr code and viola!
      All of the solution tooted by these enthusiasts are so noughties, Web 1.0 concerns that needed solving. Which is ironically; because these frothy crypto/nft depict themselves as forefront of Web 3.0 - money landrer go _brrrr_
      If I was ever keen on this fad, I’d also be selling shovels in a gold rush like all those platforms.

    • @maximyles
      @maximyles 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are already proofs of purchases. NFT is simply a means of improving an already existing idea. Prior to denim jean's, people already wore pants.
      I don't think you guys are using your imagination enough, entire governments could use NFT blockchain as a means of recording property deeds ownership. No more disputes, easy to find taxes, etc.

    • @Gordon__brown
      @Gordon__brown 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@maximyles not really - proof of purchase that relies on trust is different from proof of purchase that does NOT rely on trust. Using property deeds as an example is very 2017 of you :)
