The maid was chasing the son while they played, and he accidentally fell out of the window. One of the worst tragedies imaginable. I have no idea how Eric has performed this song without breaking down all these years

It's a song that Clapton put out there, knowing that it would probably be sung by others. Works of art do not come with "Hands Off" signs all over them and it's a little precious to pretend they do. If you don't want to hear anyone else sing the song, you can always avoid it.
