Another hefty and exhaustive overview. The new NICoNT replacement is due out this year. Brown remains very affordable on the used book market on this side of the Atlantic for any of your American listeners. I wish I still had my copy that I bought when first published. You've really sold me on Karen Jobes as well (for both John and Peter).
Really enjoyed this, especially with the focus on that specific verse. Makes me think I ought to go look into these epistles a little more! Thanks for your videos, as always 🎉
This was a fabulous discussion. So many great works! D.A Carson was supposed to give us a commentary on 1 John, but it never happened, he was also supposed to give us one on Hebrews, but that never happened.
Who knows why. I had a local man who had made a commentary on Luke his life's work but he died a couple of years ago with it unfinished. I know that Carson is still with us, but sometimes they don't reach the level of perfection that the author is happy with or occasionally it is the money. God bless you!
Hi Stephen, Thanks again. Your top 3 matches mine. Very interested in looking out the Ray Brown volume. I haven't got any of the EEC series. That one looks daunting!! Keep up the good work. God bless. Steve
I have to imagine you’re a phenomenal Pastor to be around. I don’t think I’ve ever met a Pastor who spends as much time as you studying the Bible. Especially with big hitters like these.
That is very kind of you to say, I consider this my responsibility and think that it is really important to model this tin the church. Bible first, then stand on the shoulders of giants. God bless you!
Hi pastor, a great overview! I just wanted to highlight that Hermeneia also has a commentary on 1-3 John by Georg Strecker. It’s much better than Bultmann and up to the standard of the series that we expect. It’s full of great theological reflection. For example, I think you would like the comments on 3:1 as a preacher. When I translated 1-3 John last year I found the combo of Lieu, Bennett, Myers and Strecker the commentaries I most tuned to, even though Lieu can be dry and often not clear.
Hi pastor, I own too many commentaries like you! What I like about Lieu is that she drew a line under all the speculation in commentaries about a hypothetical Johannine community that try to mirror read every line in 1-3 John as being about a crisis in the community caused by secessionists. Even though Brown’s commentary is excellent, he’s the worst here. Lieu, Bennett and Myers don’t follow this tendency and that’s why i bumped them up. But I’ll look at Jobes now.
Thanks for the survey and review Stephen! Commentaries on 1-3 John are a favorite of mine as well. Jobes is excellent but Smalley is my favorite. I'm glad to see that these letters have been getting some attention recently because often they are forgotten and neglected. I would have you know that just last month the Exegetical Guide to the Greek New Testament (EGGNT) entry by Robert Plummer and E. Roderick Elledge was just released. Its great to have a new work on the letters that has up to date scholarship. And I saw it mentioned below already but yes Bultmann was replaced by Georg Strecker's entry in Hermeneia.
Thank you for the mention of Plummer. I am struggling to source that in the UK, as it seems to be still on "pre-order" - that will be because of the later launch dates over here. Since last night i have sourced a copy of Strecker and will look forward to getting my hands on that. Thanks for taking the time to leave a message. God bless you!
Once again a wonderful review. Thanks from Finland. If I may ask... How do you feel that your top three is better than Kruse's pillar one? It is often rated number one thats why I bought it. But I would buy something else (from your top three?!) if those are clearly offering something more/better. Blessings!
Thanks for your point. The truth is that I ordered a copy to be delivered in time for the review, but it was delayed and took about 6 weeks. It has now arrived and I will look at it in due course, in the past I have not been as impressed with Pillar and only in the last 2 years have I started to be impressed with them ( this is down to me - previously I only had some of the last generation). So, at the moment I haven't really looked at it, but when I next update that video it will be part of the discussion. So sorry, I hope that isn't too much of a disappointment. I really appreciate your question and am grateful that you took the time to ask. God bless you!
Thanks for your cafeful answer and truly good reason! Honestly I wasn't superimpressed by Kruse's Pillar but very eager to find good Johannine material, so in the meanwhile I might have to try your top three. 😀 I enjoy your channel a lot, the new 'one verse comment quote' is a great peak into each author and your overall positive attitude is wonderfully pleasent!
Glad you got your workout in with the New Interpreters! 😂
The Lord bless you, brother.
You know it is the nearest thing to exercise that I get! God bless you!
Thanks pastor. Love the quotes from a specific verse
Thanks! Every blessing!
Me too! 😊

I am glad to hear that Brown is affordable over there! I am looking forward to the commentary but it may be a few months more in the UK. God bless!
Thank you Reverend. Comparing what they have to say on a verse helps!
Appreciate your comment. I thought it was worth trying and am glad to see that it helps. Bless you!
Thanks for doing these. Really enjoy watching them!
Thank you for taking the time to say so. God bless you!

I just nabbed a copy of the Ray Brown in mint condition on ebay. Thanks for the tip.
Well done! A sound investment! Blessings!
Great video!

Thanks so much for your insight. I hadn't any idea about Strecker. I really appreciate your comments. Blessings!
