As a greenhore in N. FL I was considering the fruiting wood as second year since it was so close to the branch and I kept seeing videos saying first year so it was pretty confusing. If you just heard someone say first year wood I think most would prune heavy when dormant and you would loose a lot of berries in the spring and maybe get some on the tips later that year? I think pruning them after fruiting would be best as well, although you see lots of videos saying prune in winter? Thanks for going into more detail.

      Greenhore? Greenhorn, maybe, lol?
Yeah, it seems like most videos show pruning while dormant in winter. But from this video it sure sounds like pruning after fruiting in late spring makes more sense. 🤔

I have 2 Indian mulberries. One has a single trunk structure, and the other is multiple trunked. Both are only about a year old, and 5 1/2 feet tall. How do I prune the multi-trunked individual? I understand they do not heal very well and you've got to be careful. All the trunks are about pinky size in diameter, probably 10 of them. Thanks.

If I want a mulberry just for the birds, do you have a suggestion on what variety would be good?

Hmmmmmmm, I would highly recommend a native red (Morus rubra) it’s hard to find nursery stock of real red mulberry, particularly female plants. Where are you located? The best thing to do is find a native red near you with fruit in the spring and get cuttings. Most cultivated mulberries have a pretty different growth habit than the native species. Tice and Everbearing are pretty readily available types that are good producers and the birds will love. The everbearing can be kept smaller and makes insane amounts of small berries. The Tice is perhaps most similar to our native species. I believe it to have Morus Rubra in its lineage. Happens to also be the best tasting largest fruited variety I have had.

@@TheHivefl Do you think the Tice would grow in dappled sun? It would get a lot of late evening sun

Some varieties have this habit. It’s not a weeping mulberry is it? Be mindful of the direction the bud is pointing that you prune back to. If you are are trying to get fruit a weeping type growth habit is perfect for easy harvesting. Do you want the tree to grow tall?

@@TheHivefl i seen weeping mulberry and i think it's not that. Only the central leader and its side branches going up but all the rest from sides old are are hanging. I commented on many other channels and from one of those told me its not much mature to hold the weight so keep the wires until next year. Its only two years old and 8 feet in height.
