Lived at 30 Roundel Road back in the early 60's when Hillcrest houses RCAF family. Spent many winter nights skating at the rink. Barry Tupper's dad looked after the ice. Once I reached the age of 17, the CE section permitted our teenage group to flood the ice. I vividly remember trying to hook the fire hose up on Kluane Crescent and we tried to get the water going before it froze in the hose. Then we hauled the hoses into a warming hit and turned the stove on so that the hoses would not freeze. One evening when I got home around 11:30 p.m. my mom simply said to me, "when it is so cold, sound really carries". We did our job more quietly and I believe probably with less profanity going forward. Thanks for the memory.

What a great memory! You and your group must have had a blast on that ice. Thank you for sharing, Jerry!

@@outdoorhockeyclub don't know if you remember Hockey Day in Canada from Whitehorse a number of years ago but Ron McLean talked about the outdoor rink as well. I am about 10 years older than Ron McLean and I don't remember him at all but I do remember delivering papers and flyers from Molloys to all th homes. Still friends with some of the AirForce Brats that used to hang out together in Hillcrest.

@@jerrygoodeill1585 I heard the story about Ron MacLean and saw the two houses where he used to live while in Hillcrest for a couple of years. Great to hear you are still connected with your Hillcrest friends!

Great to hear your memories Jerry! Thanks for sharing. Our family has lived in the Hillcrest Community since 1983. Our kids learned to skate on this rink and I still enjoy shinny with my son and the great people of Hillcrest, young and older. Ron MacLean visited the rink in 2011 with his dad when he was in Whitehorse for Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada and then again in 2016 for Rogers Hometown Hockey when he played wth the Atom Development team. He told us he lived in Hillcrest between ages 4 to 8. He learned to skate and play his first hockey here!

@@raymarnoch3504 happy to hear from you Ray. I am about 10 years older than Ron MacLean so chances are pretty good that our paths crossed at the outdoor rink, also at the Rec. centre on the base and should I ever get the chance to ask him if he took swimming lessons our paths would have crossed either on the bus riding downtown to the pool, I was a bus monitor, and also helped out with the beginner swimming lessons.
