@Fishing Long Island I've never been a pro but there was a time that my buddy and me were on the river 2 or 3 days a week. Before daylight till after dark. I tried every way under the sun to get line on my reels with minimum twist and it just didn't work. THEN, I discovered that bait and tackle shops would spool line for a minimal charge and gave it a try. What a discovery! So, I bought extra spools for all my reels and would drop a set off when I picked a set up. It was worth every penny. Sure, you can get some twist just through use but to start off with flat, straight line was a game changer!
Thank you for an excellent demonstration. This is the first video where vision of exactly how a knot was tied showing the exact procedure of braid to monofilament was demonstrated. Thank you chaps. Cheers
@@FishingLongIsland Thank you for your response. I would very much appreciate it if you could thank the young lad for a good presentation. I am about to use that knit he demonstrated very shortly to tie my 50 lb Filler to my 50 lb braid. I wish you chaps were here in Australia as the number of fishing tackle shops are limited. Cheers mates!
*Have used the braided line for several years **enjoyable.fishing** recommend both for salmon in the summer as well as walleye through the ice. Can’t beat it for the price!*
*Bought a 500 for an ultralight rod. It's very smooth **enjoyable.fishing** recommend casts great. One odd thing- the bale wire is a bit heavy diameter in my opinion for a reel of this size. But a great purchase.*
Excellent video. Question though. I have a penn Senator 6/0 reel. It holds 925yds of 100lb braid. I would like to spool it with 500yds of 100lb braid. Any idea how much 100lb mono backing I should spool onto the reel so that after adding the braid it will just fill the spool? I know there is a very cumbersome way of doing it to figure it out, just hoping you'd have a shorter method. Thank you in advance.
If it’s an ultralight with a small Reel , I would just go with a straight braid fill. I would put a small amount of hockey tape on the Reel spool just to make sure the line stays in place. Then use all Albright knots for the connections.
why 10 to 15 feet of mono as the lead? will that not contradict the use of the braided line since 10 feet of mono will still have some stretching and kill the sensitivity of the braided line?
ROBERT TREVINO no it does not at all. You actually want some leader for a little bit of stretch. You can pull the hooks out easier when battling Fish with no stretch. Also working around structure the mono floral carbon is a little more forgiving than going straight braid. I always have 15 foot top shots on my reels when wreck fishing.
Second question, why was the braided line not filled to the very end to minimize the friction from the edge of the spool when casting? seems that friction will affect the casting distance although minimally but not sure
The most appropriate answer will be: To give space to a top shot line. There are preferences in monofilament or fluorocarbon and of course in length, that space in the spool can be filled with a top shot. I'm not talking about the leaders, that usually take a few yards, shorts or longs with knots or swivels but that is other history, depending of the type of fishing, surf casting, pier, lures, live bait, jetty, bottom from boat, etc.
Just went to sportsman’s and had them spool my reel. This dude spooled it extremely loose and I’m pissed. So my guess is, just cast it out as far as I can and try to reel it in with a bunch of pressure on the line by hand ? I’ll try tomorrow
You can run the line behind a boat. Make sure nothing on line. The pressure from the boat will be fine. Let it out go like 8-10 mph n reel in. It will be perfect
Fishing Long Island I don’t have a boat. I’m thinking I will go to a lake and cast it really far with a big lure and then just walk until it’s at the end of the line and then pinch in with my fingers and reel it all in?
juncags1 You can go straight braid but it’s gonna cost you an arm and a leg. You fill half with mono and you save a lot of money plus you could still have 300 yards of braid on top of the mono
Cody Smithson Johnston couple reasons. Braid is very thin so that Reel would hold like 1000 yards which in return would be very expensive. So you do a mono backing and fill the reel halfway and then put the rest with the braid. If you were tuna fishing you would go straight braid but for a Surf Fishing. reel, mono backing is the way to go.
@@FishingLongIsland hows it going buddy I had a question. If I'm filling a shimana spheros sw6000 reel with 40# braid... would it be best to just feel it all up with braid only? I have leftover braid from a 300 yard spool and also wanted to know if I could use that on my penn fierce lll 4000 and maybe use some mono as backing! If so, what #test of mono would be ideal to use as backing? Hope to hear from you soon and I'll appreciate it! 🙏🏽🤙🏽
Mykel Medeiros I do a lot of all braid fills. I use hockey tape or black tape on the spool to prevent the braid from slipping. I’ll do 20 pound backing on most my reels but still go heavy fill with the braid. I really don’t want to get to the backing. Hope that helps out.
@@FishingLongIsland thank you brother this was very helpful. I decided to use electric tape as it works great like you mention an I'll just pay the extra to fill 100% of same lb braid... 🙏🏽🤙🏽
I use thinner diameter mono, maybe 10-12 pound test... the big mono makes valleys for the braid and can be uneven, will never fight a fish on the backing, it’s just to hold the line or save some money by not spoiling all braid which is expensive. If you have a 4000 or 5000 reel it will hold >300 yards of 20 lb braid which is plenty for onshore fishing. Very good video tho - nice explanation.
LeoCasciello that’s what most but for the surf but was not 100% sure n before I give an answer I always want to make sure it’s correct. Thank you for watching
@@FishingLongIsland Hello :) The good thing about the arbor knot is that it cinches on itself. So the knot is very tight against the spool and won't slip. You can use this knot for so many things, Like to start the line to a spool, to attach a sleeping bag, etc, etc... You can even restrain a very annoying customer on your boat with that knot ;) It's a very easy knot and very useful :) The arbor knot is also called the Canadian Jam knot.
By far the best way to spool a spinning reel with no twist, have the tackle shop do it! So satisfying to cast straight line.
Thank you 🙏🏼

I really don’t. You can always put braid on then see what’s left to fill mono the reel. The do opisiite fill
Bass fishing with that lb test lol
No clue. Not mine
Can I do this for an ultralight set up? Would it affect my distance when casting since it’s not all braided line?
It just helps fill the Reel, so the braid gets closer to the top without doing a total braid fill, which would be very very expensive
If it’s an ultralight with a small Reel , I would just go with a straight braid fill. I would put a small amount of hockey tape on the Reel spool just to make sure the line stays in place. Then use all Albright knots for the connections.

ROBERT TREVINO you never want to overfill. Can cause more wind knots. Also always manually close the bail to help that to.

Overfill, not leaving a wee bit…is the fastest way to have a problem. Every time. Never overfill.

WHEN BACKING UP YOUR REEL THOSE THE SIZE OF MONO AND BRAIDED LINE HAS TO BE THE SAME LB. TEST?

Have a bg 3000 reel, how much 8# berkley trilene mono backing will I need for 8# J-Braid? Will spoolng machines tell you how much line your spoiling?

Is there a big school field by you? You can walk it out. Tie to football goal post
same size of lbs ? whats the proper way sir, ty in advance sir
Yes
Is backing really necessary or it is just a matter of preference?
juncags1 You can go straight braid but it’s gonna cost you an arm and a leg. You fill half with mono and you save a lot of money plus you could still have 300 yards of braid on top of the mono
Any time you wrap one direction 10x’s and 10x’s in the opposite direction it’s an Alberto knot-the Albright knot is 10 wraps in one direction only!!
Eric Charlton there are many names. Before Alberto it was the modified or the improved Albright. In the end they are all Albright knots.
I thought Sir Albright was Alberto in Spanish.
Why do you put the mono on first?
