I am through spooling my reels with pure braid. I did a search to see if what I was thinking of doing has been done by someone else, and there you where. Glad to have found your site.
It's just about how you wan't to go about it. I am always looking for the balance between efficiency and cost. For me it's all about maximizing every chance I get.
Great advice, but to to help improve the leader knot, would recommend using the crazy Alberto knot, i have not had it break on me yet, and easy to tie compared to other knots. And I tend to set the hook way to hard when using my spinning gear.
Nice video just in time for me to spool up my spinning reels too. Now if one of the good weather days can just fall on my day off. This year i promised myself I'm going to make the effort to go fishing at least once a week. Maybe March will be a good time to start.
Good tips, I use mono which degrades over time, even when it is not used, I think it has a shelf life of 2 maybe 3 years before it needs replacing, so I might as well stick all on the spool to get some use out of it.
I match the rotation of the bail and how the line comes off the filler spool. I honestly think it's how you look at the spinning reel turning. I hold it upside down over my filler spool and make sure they both rotate the same way. A person may say one way or another but it's different if you're looking from behind the reel or in front. That's why I hold it over the filler spool to make sure. Good vid!
Ya, I think I do the same thing to spool my reel. Bassresource told me he calls it the jump rope method. I stand behind my reel and the new spool of line is facing my reel. if my reel picks up the line clockwise then the line coming off the new spool should come off clockwise as well. visually its like 2 people swinging a jump rope.
Awesome info. I’ve been using braid to mono on my spinning reel, but the last 2 times out the line is dumping off the spool. I think it’s due to it being garbage line, but it’s a hassle. Just using crap line because I have a spool if it and don’t want to waste it.
Nice video i've watched the baitcaster one too and it's really helpfull ! I've heard before that you don't want the leader to go in the reel cause it can get stuck on other lines and create a mess. He was using the alberto knot and kept the leader knot between the reel and the first guide making sure it never goes in. Maybe it's different with the knot you're using and you never had that problem, anyway thanks for sharing knowledge :)
I was always told that when you add new line to your backing it should go on the same way it comes off.So when you reel and it goes on clockwise it should come off the new spool clockwise. You say just the opposite, goes on clockwise comes off counter clockwise, to reduce line twist. Is that just because it’s braid to fluorocarbon or always? This is for a spinning reel of course.
Sorry It really depends on how your looking at the reel. You want the line to go on the reel the same way it comes off the spool. That's about the easiest way I can put it.
Thanks for the tip man, ive always used big game 10lb for backing but seeing as i have some cheapo fladen braid lying about I'll do it ur way nex time.
Awesome video. Was looking foward to it after your baitcaster one. I buy Kastking braid for cheap. Actually started using and really like it besides being my cheap braid.
I have tried to only use a fluorocarbon leader to braid, using the uni knot. Over the years I've found that as the uni knot continuously hits the rod guides in and out and the knot weakens fairly quickly and end up with frequent line breaks during a day fishing. Now, I haven't had much experience with the FG knot yet, so that's still TBD, but I expect the same issue. I have better luck putting on backing and then put on about 60-80 yds of fluorocarbon. Yes, it's more expensive than a leader, but less expensive than all one line type. HOWEVER, ultimately I have much more infrequent breaks at the knot location due to the constant abuse running over the guides. As a note, it doesn't seem to matter what braid or fluorocarbon brand I use, the end result is the same.
What leader length do you use most? What I've discovered with the uni to uni is that after your leader is whittled down to 5 to 8 feet the knot due to the lack of give on both the braid and fluoro. will snap the knot. Most of the time it's less about the knot going through the guides and more about the lack of give because the knot tightens as pressure is applied.
@@BassGeek depends on what technique I’m using. In dropshot, its typically a short leader, about 3 ft. Your rod is more limber, so hookset isnt abrupt enough to pop the knot. If its something that requires casting then a 15 ft leader is fine. If small jig or shakeyhead, about 10 ft if in clear water. Normally with spinning gear I’m more finesse fishing so hookset isnt like fishing a 1/2 jig. In the end I’ve personally had less breaks with the only knot being on the lure to spool. Most line breaks occur at the knot, so my philosophy is the less knots between the spool and the lure, less likely chance for a knot failure. Thanks for the videos, I’ve definitely picked up some different ideas.
Man I'm telling ya, under a flood warning until the 6th here on Pickwick in Muscle Shoals and Tuscumbia. Gonna hit 4ft above flood stage, but yesterday during a break before this caught 5 LM over 6lbs and even a black crappie that was about 2.5lbs.
A big thing we preach is also using a layer of electrical tape on your spool - the rubbery texture allows the braid to grab and sink rather than slip on some of those full-metal spools. Another thing we do is - when using fluoro on baitcasters, let out 50 or so yards, put a little tape on it and when it backlashes you'll save yourself some line.
Ah, yeah - I tend to use it as a filler - throwing NanoFil, NanoBraid, and other super expensive braided lines adds up quickly, as I'm sure you know being a braid guy.
here what i do , step off in the back yard the actual number of yards is appropriate for the type of fishing you will be doing . For me 75 yds more than enough for me bass fishing . I back fill the reel with plain old good quality mono then finish with top quality braided .
Good video man great knowledge to learn something every time I watch your videos and congrats on 8000 Subs you were just at 7000 a little bit ago growing pretty fast
Do you have any tip on how much backing i need to put in order for my main line to fit just right on the reel? For eg. On my reel it says 165 yards of 0.27 ...and i usually buy 165 yards of 0.21 or 0.23... thus i have no ideea how much backing to put on. Mind that I don't have a spare
I will admit on spinning gear the upside is NO were near a much as it is on a casting reel. The biggest reason for me is the longevity of the line. I can use super CHEAP braid and not have to change it for years. Mono tends to start breaking down after a year or two.
Talk to me. Tell me why I want to use a leader. I figured I’d use 10 lb braided line bc it’s stronger and smaller. I do a lot of crappie fishing and if my line is strong , if I get hung up in the brush , usually with 10 lb braided line I could straighten the hook enough on the jig so when I pulled it up I could just restraighten the jig and keep on fishing. I could tie a 4lb test leader on the end , but what significance would that serve? I could pop my line real easily and would have to retie another jig on. I don’t mind retying, it’s just that when the fish are hitting, I want to fish and not be tying lures on
Hey Bassgeek, always learn from your videos like this one. I'm not sure if I missed it, but I was unsure why you used 2 braids then flouro. I'm going to try this line backing thing on my spinning reel. I always use flouro. What do u think if I do like your bait casting reel video and only use cheap flouro about 50 percent of the spool with 30lb braid and then fill the rest with good 6lb or 8lb flours?
You don't have to use to braids. I back my good braid (because it's super expensive) with cheap braid to save money. That's the only reason. You can put a single braid on if ya like.
i did this with mono backing and it just ended up making a slight bump on the reel and when i cast the braid would get stuck around that bump, ultimately giving me knots of hell that i just did away with this idea. thinking of just sucking it up and just doing full braid to swivel to fluoro/mono. no issues when i did it like that ,albeit more costly
I get why you use the braid backing on a baitcaster, but I don't get why you use it as backing on spinning??? I use whatever cheap mono I have laying around to fill the bottom third of my spinning reel spool, then I use my 8, 10 or 15 pound braid, depending on the rod power/action, and I run a 10-15 foot flouro leader.
Man I tried this and when tying the double uni and went to pull the lines together it just kept going moving and fell off. Was not tight what so ever. Any advice to why that happened? Also could you just use the braid first then fluorocarbon and be done with it? Thanks man I always learn stuff from your channel!
I'm not sure why it kept sliding. You do need to be sure to you tie both knots in the correct direction and pull them up tight. I have a double uni knot video. You can I just don't like to waste the money on good braid also.
Hey so does that 50lb backing prevent you from casting far? No boat here so the longer the cast the better for me. Have 10lb braid on one and it flys off the reel pretty stinking good. So was wondering if that thicker stuff messes with casting distance? Thanks man!
Hey Bass Geek love your vids man..when you refer to 20lb braid are you referring to your backing or to your main line? If you’re referring to your backing have you also downsized with your baitcasters?

So I have a white, black, brown, and green. That should cover all the bases. My favorite is the brown but I fish clear water a lot.
I can't argue you can find cheaper mono then the cheapest braid out there. However especially cheap mono begins to for lake of a exact term melt down after a few years under the main line or braid and main line. I recently got my girlfriend a inexpensive spinning combo and don't want to be the one constantly tying on a leader for her 😂. Would I be able to get away with braid backing and fluorocarbon main line similar to your baitcasting video? If so, what ratio? Also, do you need to adjust your drag while spooling a spinning reel? Thanks in advance!
Just lost a toad as my double uni knot failed. My fluoro leader was down to about 2 feet and was tied to 10 lb braid. Heard you say that a small leader allows too much stress on the uni knot. Does anybody have any input on this?
Honestly, I just haven't sat down and protected it yet. So for efficiency and time saving reasons I haven't added it to my arsenal yet. I don't mind the double uni or blood knot on spinning gear because the eye'e are so big. I don't use leaders on casting gear so the knot really makes no difference.
Why do you want to put on 100m of line on a reel when you only use about 25m on average. Cant you fish wish half a spool of fishing line and save money.

Why don't you use the FG knot. I love I started using 2 years ago and no problems no slips and it really small. Give it a try
Honestly, I just haven't sat down and protected it yet. So for efficiency and time saving reasons I haven't added it to my arsenal yet. I don't mind the double uni or blood knot on spinning gear because the eye'e are so big. I don't use leaders on casting gear so the knot really makes no difference.
very smart!
Thanks
I wouldn't want to fill any spool with red label...
Well when you pay for the better stuff go ahead and send me some.
@@BassGeek Invizx is $6-7 more to spool up a reel. It's a far superior product just for less memory issues alone.
@@smokesgtp Cool my address in in the description
@@BassGeek if you didn't have 15 grand worth of reels, electronics and tackle behind you, you might have a case
smokesgtp hey I gotta skimp somewhere lol
Why do you want to put on 100m of line on a reel when you only use about 25m on average. Cant you fish wish half a spool of fishing line and save money.
Sure if you want to reduce casting distance by half. I fish ultra clear water so a longer cast is a must. Plus braid lasts for eeeeeever.
