    I watched this series as a young boy at Saturday mornings matinee's back at the beginning of the 1950's it was awe inspiring to watch. I again watched the series on TV back in the 190's and although just a little dated was still very watchable. I've never watched it since it was colourised and no doubt puts a great realism to it. Although made in the 1930's I think all boys and girls would still sit and watch it.

    Even with the pre-historic special effects, there is an innocence and enthusiasm about the Sci-Fi serials of the 1930s that does a better job of capturing the numinous feeling of wonder of science fiction than much more sophisticated stories that came later. It was after all Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon that inspired the boys who put man on the moon 30 years later after they grew to be men.

    When I was a kid back around 1970 or so my dad took us to see a Flash Gordon episode at a small local movie theatre. The place was packed and the kids all sat on the floor up front. It was an episode where they were on a spaceship on the way to the moon or somewhere. Ming had hidden himself on board and at some point appeared with a lit bomb, with the fuse sizzling away. After a dramatic struggle with the fuse getting shorter and shorter, Flash was able to subdue Ming and wrestle the bomb from him. He ran to the door of the ship, wrenched it open, hurled the bomb out into space in the nick of time, and then staggered back into Dale's arms as they panted in horror and relief. Us kids all rolled on the floor screaming with laughter. On the way home we were still howling over Flash Gordon flinging open the door of the spaceship to save everyone, and my dad said, "Boy, when I was a kid that show wasn't funny, it was EXCITING!" One of my favorite childhood memories. :o)

    I used to watch these in the early 50's when I was a kid and they were on TV. THEY were on every day. I loved Flash Gordon ! In fact my sister and I would play Flash Gordon. I loved Ming as the villan.

    Had this serial been edited into a full length movie and come out in theaters in 1936, I think it would have both been a really big hit and go down as 1 of the greatest adventure movies of all time. It would have been really long, but totally worth it

    • @BAM-jc7uy
      @BAM-jc7uy ปีที่แล้ว +6

      it was a big hit at the movies in the 30s as a weekly series, along with the main feature, cartoons, news, a second feature and sometimes a raffle give-away on the stage.

    However....i'm still thinking of that space vixen Princess Aura!
    A question CCC. Are you going to show a colorized version of Jungle Girl with Francis Gifford?

    It's an OCTOSACK. Only Buster Crabbe can handle one of those! He wins '32 LA Olympics swimming 200 Gold and Hollyweird grabs him only to never get him any decent directing. He was better than anyone knew. A true serial action star.

    Comenzó a dedicarse a la primera película, Star Wars, mostrándose muy influenciado por el director japonés Akira Kurosawa. En la lista de inspiraciones de Lucas se encuentran también producciones como Flash Gordon y libros como "John Carter" (de Edgar Rice Burroughs) y "Dune" (de Frank Herbert).

    In the not-far-off future, it should be possible for A.I. systems to colorize, stabilize, enhance audio and convert old movies into 3D with simple commands. It'll make these older movies look like they were shot recently and with excellent film equipment.
