I'm 76 & in 1950, at age 4, I appeared on a very early t.v. show, hosted by Buster Crabbe!
He was about 42 at the time, but looked essentially as he did as "Flash Gordon" (except
his hair was darker! ) Soon after this, his "Flash Gordon' serials began on t.v. & were so
successful that In 1952, a brand new "F.G." series started, with Steve Holland playing "Flash"!
The Hawkman's sky city was the inspiration for Lando's mining cloud city in ," the Empire Strikes Back". So many Star Wars ideas were taken from Flash Gordon.
Star Trek also had a city in the sky in the episode "The Cloud Minders".
This old serial was a modern classic. One of the best sci fi productions ever.

Jean Rogers........huba huba. I'm sure many a young lad enjoyed watching Jean run around Mars in her space outfit.
These were shown between movies in theaters. This is from 1936, and Television wasn't unveiled to the public until 1939

Once this serial is done, we can hopefully see Buck Rogers here as well. Buster Crabbe was also the titular hero in that
fantastic to see this in color
For a 30's sci fi, this series even had some cool special effects, although I think they could have gone the extra mile and made a more decent lion-man costume.

Back then, the men were big & strong & the women were beautiful in a different way than they are today. I doubt anyone from back then would find the pumped-up bodies & lips of the men & women of our era attractive.
And I totally understand why.

I actually have it on DVD but the thrill of waiting for the next one is quite intoxicating, not to mention joy of seeing Dale & Princess Aura in color! I must admit, the way they kind of go gray & then suddenly change back to color takes some getting used to but I guess some of the women I've dated over the last few years have done the same thing, so I know it's something I can get used to...
Jean Rogers, what a babe, and the perfect femme fatale in my mind. She was about 20 when this was made.

In color you can see every single thing better than in black and white
It explains why they chose Brian Blessed to play the king of the Hawkmen in the later film.
There was a Tijuana Bible printed in the 30s, satirizing Flash Gordon/Buck Rodgers, and entitled "The ENLARGING Ray"

Right, so, the budget was limited, but somehow they had enough change to bring out a BEAR, with TIGER STRIPES, and a NOSE RING?!
Except for the gunpowder smeared all over their bodies, this was a fun romp thru a nascent sci fi film.
If I were Flash,I think I'd take Mings daughter she seems like a fun girl

Doesn't Metropolis mean anything to you? That is a movie ,this is a cartoon. By that I don't want to take anything away from cartoons. When the British people saw Metropolis , they were frightened by the technique the Germans were showing that they had. Metropolis 1927
