  • In this episode of Pullmanomics, professional boxing trainer John Pullman goes over the proper technique for how to throw the hook. The hook can be a tricky punch for some, and comes more natural to others, but the good thing about it is if you practice it enough, it can feel effortless.

These tutorials are great, I took up kickboxing and altough I started at a late stage of my life and there are many differences between the two sports, I find your channel very helpful, I watch your tutorials when I wanna focus a bit more on the boxing technique. A solid boxing is a pillar for every combat sport.

Thanks a lot for this! I've started boxing but getting shoulder impingement pain / bursitis pain and not sure if its because my trainer told me to start throwing hooks more of an overhand arch from top to bottom because when I threw my hooks like yours I have wrist pain. Is there a way around this? Thanks coach.

Thank you so much for checking out our video and for your comment!
The most important thing first and foremost is you want to make sure you don’t have any sort of injury so make sure to rule that out. It’s always good to ice your wrist too if it’s bothering you.
Once you are better, a few things I recommend are make sure your wrist is locked and strong when you are throwing the hook. Also make sure you have a tight fist when you are making contact. There are also exercises you can do to strengthen your wrist in general and build strength in that area. Look into forearm exercises for wrist strengthening. Make sure your hands are wrapped well and secure too. In addition to having them wrapped well and using good wraps, you can always use hand wrap tape, check out war tape...that’s how I wrap my fighters hands.
Hope these things help and good luck!

@@PullmansGym Awesome thanks for the advice! Would you say that activating the muscles in the shoulder is a good idea when throwing the hook or is it more a loose shoulder joint and locked forearm/wrist?

@@JonoLam I prefer not to be tense in the shoulder area. I prefer a strong forearm and wrist and non tense shoulder. Good luck!
