  • This 1990 beaver had not been used in years, so I [insert jokes here]. But seriously, this blower has not run in ~15 years. I decided to do a complete tear down and rebuild and got it running again. 2 stroke small engine leaf blower repair.

That is one awesome vintage mcculloch blower. I’m surprised this blower is still showing some life after all these years. Older small engines were built to last plus easier to repair, for sure. The thing is that I work at the local rental and outdoor power equipment store and my boss knows that the older weed eaters, blowers, chainsaws, lawn mowers and whatnot were easier to repair. I even had to tune up a few old tillers and they fired right up. Careful with the ethanol content though, because even the smallest amounts of ethanol in gasoline can slowly eat up a good engine. Despite missing the original pull start, this thing still has spark after all these years.
McCulloch used to sell good lawn equipment back in the 1990s. Besides my parents used to have the same identical blower, except it’s a super airstream iv. Hope yours will last you forever. Again, this really explains to me why old stuff is still the best.

Thanks for watching. Yes, I was encouraged when it still had spark.

I wish mcculloch still made good blowers like this one today.

How did u get it to prime up without a primer bulb. I hve this exact model and I noticed tht it doesnt hve a primer bulb or return fuel line. So I cnt get it to fire up. I've already cleaned everything and checked spark. Thts all good jus dnt kno how to prime the system.

Correct - there is no primer bulb. It "primes" by sucking in fuel when the engine turns over. So put the choke on and pull until you see fuel going up the fuel line from the tank. Or take the recoil starter off and put a drill on the crank to spin it. If it won't pull any fuel in, then there is probably a sealing issue somewhere or the ring / cylinder wall is wore out and doesn't have a good seal. There has to be vacuum to suck up fuel. Could be a clogged fuel filter on the end of the fuel line as well.

@@Sockets_and_Sprockets ahh ok! I thought I could be or could possibly work tht way, thts a first for me tho so I wasnt sure. I'll double check compression and carburetor gaskets to make sure all is in order. Fuel line and filter hve already been replaced. Thanks for the info man! I appreciate it!!

What a great video, I am planning to exact an rebuild like you did! can you tell me what kind of replacement bearings you used for crankcase?
    Greetings

It's been a while, but I think I used IKO Bearing BHA87ZOH for the crankshaft bearings. No guarantees - I'd measure what you take out before ordering anything. Good luck

Did you remove the ring and clean the piston, or did I miss that.
I have a homelit blower that looks very similar and has no compression all I see junk around the ring and cause it to be stuck in pistons, I would think this has to be my problem.???

Well done job! Today i purcase from scrap a brushcutter - mac 65 sl , that are using same engine. After replace fuel line/ filter and a carb cleaning , it works perfectly. Very good engines, unfortunate today mcculloch is china...
