I think as far as service goes, it comes down to expectations.
I was disappointed with the service in the US and even Canada at most places I went to. Here in NZ, I have come to expect that every cafe is just different, and that along with the quirky nature of the cafes, this is part of their character. The main thing is, the coffee is good almost everywhere you go.
Some places will serve you at the table, but that’s the exception and they will request you to take a seat and then come and take your order. Anything goes everywhere else and ordering and paying upfront (sometimes after) is more the norm.
When we go to a cafe we are happy to help ourselves to water; grabbing our own cutlery isn’t a problem. Some places will bring water and/or cutlery.
For me, service is all about being served by nice friendly people. In the US, the service was uniform from place to place, but my idea of good service is about feeling welcome. With the exception of two places in Austin where the serving staff made us feel welcome, serving staff were generally efficient but indifferent and disinterested. Disinterested staff stand out like sore thumb here in NZ, but seem to be the norm in the US where warm friendly staff are the exception.
It’s not just cafe’s though, it’s retail in general. You can tell that a lot of the hospitality staff in the US don’t want to be there. I agree that tipping creates a uniformly delivered service, but it can either be over-the-top with staff being exceedingly annoyingly helpful, or they are just going through the motions like they don’t want you there. Either way, it’s not great service to feel like you are being worked on for a tip, or treated like you are just a body on a seat.

I'm pretty sure Auckland Transport isn't even taking cash anymore on buses. Back in the first lockdown the drivers started waving people without HOP cards on if they tried to offer cash. You can buy a ticket at the station or a card (which makes the fares cheaper too, and they're still kind of expensive so it's worth it) but if you're at a street stop vs a station then there are no ticket machines

You are right it isn't cheap here in Aotearoa, but as a disabled person who has travelled the world for work, it's not cheap anywhere when disabled. On average a trip to Hawaii from here is around 12000, due to taking a caregiver and needing certain accommodations. So for Kiwis travelling, it's not cheap. Some bus drivers are lenient if it’s obvious that you didn’t see them, but yeah, if you don’t wave them down, they assume you’re waiting for another bus. It makes their job easier.
They don’t give change anymore? Goes to show how long it’s been since I got my Hop card.
“Zee” was acceptable when we had no covid and there was that Spitting Image song that went “Now N-Zee is virus-free, we kicked it in the tits!” I used to say that to Trumpy nut cornflakes online who called us communists.
Wait, TH-cam ate part of my comment. I laughed my head off at “no tipping means the service is mediocre at best”. I went to the US and none of the bells and whistles that come with tipped service even registered to me because the New Zealand way is good enough for me, especially when it also means we don’t have to navigate the unspoken minefield of tipping culture and deal with servers bottling up and then blowing up about stuff like not rounding the tip up to the next quarter, because the people who tip the exact percentage are more likely to care than the people who deliberately don’t tip at all.
The independence thing is something I think some Americans might like - I’ve seen so many of them complaining about servers taking too long to bring the cheque.
As for the “ugh, I have to help you” thing, United takes the gold medal for that, I’m afraid.

Janette - Interesting that you think my view of New Zealand is so negative. I am just talking about a few things to watch out for - I love NZ!

@@Kiwiamericans New Zealanders dont laugh about not being good at putting sun screen on our Children, especially as skin cancer is the most common cancer here. Also, poor service being mentioned as a scam at a time when the industry is struggling is to survive...Tone deaf.

Janette - skin cancer runs in my family and so it is a major concern for me. I think that having re- apply the sunscreen so much stresses me out and I often forget because managing a family of 6 is a lot. I agree with you that I may have not been sensitive enough around poor service. I appreciate your honesty and am sorry to see you go. Have a wonderful holiday season!
