Joan’s talent n’ voice were beyond all else bk then. Her, Jonie Mitchell n’ Buffy St. Claire did it for me man. No wonder Dylan fell so damn hard for her.
YES, exactly! I feel the same way. Funny how time has a way of bringing it all to the surface:Bob Dylan once told her that her poverty was lousy. And this woman´s songs have enchanted us for decades and will continue to. She has become more beautiful with the years, her portraits bedazzling and poor Bob, well, his God-given writing skills don´t touch me like hers do.
I once saw an interview of Dylan in which he was asked about Joan and in part he said something like, "Well, she could really play. She had that finger picking and I never could do that".
If she only wrote and performed a single song in public, this is the one it should be. Her music should be preserved and protected for future generations to enjoy so that they can hear what beauty and meaning can be expressed by such a great musical artist. Bravo, Joan!
My older sister brought home the first Joan Baez record when I was about 13.. I met her at a demonstration when I was a junior in High School. I cut school to go.
+Alan Land Baez is actively lashing back at Bob Dylan, who (famously) told Joan that her vocal and composition talents were 'mediocre.' Note her sarcastic tone. (Sorry if I'm telling you something you already knew.)
50 years later and this still brings a lump to this old mans throat and a bitty tear in the corner of my eye. Still love the planets honey voiced treasure. You rock Joanie. 😍
Genevieve Serafina me too it’s so beautiful and deeply moving beautiful lyrics sung by a woman with the voice of an angel about her dear departed sister I’ve often looked at pictures of sister mimi and thought she looked like an earth angel.
...as I choreograph to it for our 50th anniversary of Woodstock show....its so beautiful when she sings it......I finally stopped crying but I still get a chill...
I can't even attempt to find the words to describe this song. It's other wordly. It captures innocence, but at the same time the desire for love. Beautiful.
This song will never die, diminish the supreme talent of Joan Baez, is ever lasting. I have been in love with this beautiful woman for over 50 years!!! Jimmy, Llandudno UK.
The 60s were such an awesome. People could actually perform simplistic folksy tunes like this at rock concerts...... Back when music was really music!!!
We recall her anti-war activism in the 60s and her relationship with DH, the student body president, at Stanford, her life and times later with BD, and Woodstock, etc.. Always passionate and even better, we listened to her singing and conversations over the years with growing respect and appreciation for sharing her gifts of music and character that helped shape a generation. Thank you.
What can I say...as a uni type loved her music in those days ..always wanted to be a Galahad to a woman but never made it and now at nearly 80 little chance. but love the girl Joan and her music.
When I was a young boy, I found an unmarked cassette with her songs on it, and the guitar and her voice mesmerized me. I was afraid of listening to secular music, but it had such an appeal to me because of the guitar style. Today, I found out who she is and that this song was written because Mr. Galahagar could keep his lust in check before he married her sister. I'm glad I didn't keep listening to it. Otherwise, I would have been drawn into a vortex I would not have been able to come out of.
I try but fail, this song is with me daily. A dream in reality to be one in the spirit of hope. A simple man, I want to wipe every tear, hold every hand, kiss every cheek and make it better. I find myself crying aloud to my Lord and Savior. He is Sir Galahad, He works thru me and offers hope. He is the Truth, Way and Life. I understand I was born to know, love and serve Him. Joan sang to us 45 years ago, the founders established America 238 years ago. Grace is not lost, it dwells within.
To me this was a very sad song, I cry when I listen... my Dad had all her records.. I love you Joan you were an inspiration to me and gave me music when I had hope of nothing.
This creature from Heaven is a SINGING SOUL, and a PRAYING HEART, for Mankind...I love you, my suave sister of this planet, and i sing with you, always!....My warm CIAO from Rome, hermana dulce de Dios!
With all due respect to Joni Mitchell, she can't hold a candle to Joan Baez. The clarity and range is amazing. I personally think she has one of the top three female voices of the last three generations.
Funny how people (men, anyway) say things like "my favourite female singer" and make comparisons between them like this but nobody ever says "my favourite male singer" or makes comparisons in this zero-sum way.
i have a sweet memory of slowdancing with a really good friend of mine with this song playing on the original woodstock vinyl when we had just bought it... wish i could go back in time somedays...
It's funny that she described her own writing as "mediocre". She was never a prolific songwriter, but she has written some songs that have become absolute classics, and her best work (this song, "Diamonds & Rust", "Love Song to a Stranger", "Speaking of Dreams", and a few others), are right up there with anything that Dylan or Joni Mitchell ever wrote.
Joan, as always, voice of an angel sung with such passion and love for life, I could listen to you for ever. The Social Concience of the World. God bless you and keep you. Jimmy U.K.
He just put his arm around her...And that's the way I found her.. Eight months later to the day....The lines of a smile erased The tear tracks upon her face....A smile could linger, even stay...Sweet Sir Galahad went down With his gay bride of flowers, The prince of the hours.. Of her lifetime.
It was true that ever since the day her crazy man had passed away to the land of poet's pride, she laughed and talked alot with new people on the block but always at evening time she cried. Mediocre? So real and poetic.
0:38 That moment from speech to singing...............is the miracle of it................singing as if it excisted already a Thousand years..........like the serines of the old ............mesmerising
Still a great song to this day, and a terrible shame what happened to Richard. His book, Been Down So Long, Its starting to look like up to Me, is both a fantastic and cataclysmic piece of work about the times and himself. A definite must-read for anyone interested in the counter culture and the 60's, not to mention Emmett Grogans book Ringolevio.
I didn't know her, i didn't know the song, but i love this song now, is really beautiful and she has a beautiful voice!! I'm in love for this song now!!
Joan: Calls her own writing mediocre
Also Joan: Begins to play the most beautiful and wholesome song imaginable.
Beautifully put
Because fakin bob dylyn told her , she is shit .
Joan has the most beautiful voice I've ever heard. This is one of her most beautiful songs. How could it be any better?
Agreed...

This song has been one of my very favorites for about 50 years or so now..........haunting, beautifully haunting.
ditto
Joan Baez was my very first concert
“I’m just smart enough to know my writing is mediocre”
Oh, honey. It really isn’t! Diamonds and Rust is a masterpiece and this isn’t too far behind.

"Gulf Winds" is another incredible (and long) song by her. It tells the story of her life, which I suppose makes it sort of autobiographical. :)
Everybody has pointed out the beauty of her voice and the words in this song. What I want to give accolades for is her incredible guitar picking.
I agree
Goes without saying - it's never been anything less than impeccable.
@@kavi2800 It might "go without saying" if you understand what she's playing, but the average Joe does not. That's why I said it.
Das stimmt, aber dieses Picking können viele. Ich kann das auch. Leider kann ich nicht so schön singen. 🤭
I once saw an interview of Dylan in which he was asked about Joan and in part he said something like, "Well, she could really play. She had that finger picking and I never could do that".
I love the fact that Joan loved her sister so much and was so happy that she had found happiness once again after being widowed at such a young age.
Joan Baez has to be one of the best singers of the century
Vocal skills of this level are a gift that can never be taught or learned.
"Blessed Are" shows off her compassion for others outside of her family. My favorite.
What a love song for her sister !😊
That song is timeless, as perfect as it was when first created.
Paris, France, April 2023.
Mimi was her sister
@@squaretriangle9208 that is correct.
Sorry.I was thinking about her brother in law…
Joan’s love for her sister Mimi shines through in this song
By hearing this song you know how much Joan loved her sister Mimi

She has one of the best voices
I'm 19 still listening to this beautiful song, I will show my kids and my grandkids this song, I love this song so much
This is one of the best songs of Woodstock
A beautiful song and that hauntingly beautiful voice of Joan Baez. I have loved her for almost 50 years!
My older sister brought home the first Joan Baez record when I was about 13.. I met her at a demonstration when I was a junior in High School. I cut school to go.
At times, she is our heart. She keeps us all going.
Joan was meant to sing to our hearts
Nothing mediocre about this song, Joan!

Joan is a wonderful, gifted person, voice and guitar playing outstanding!
I agree, this was a few years after Bob "dumped" her. I love them both still but she has a very special place in my heart.

One of the greats of the folk era and what a voice.
Mike Irwin she ain’t bad on the guitar either
Tunes that string and pours a beautiful song.
When she starts lalalala I always get goosebumps. So beautiful!
The tones just flow out of her mouth; seemingly with no effort at all.
I love this song, Joanie!

La voix de Joan Baez est un diamant brut, je ne me lasse pas d'écouter cette artiste merveilleuse

It's a shame not to be able to watch her through the whole video. It doesn't have sense that they put the credits end in such beautiful piece of art.
That voice is always stunning.
Stunning... so beautiful.
