I totally agree with you that Dell missed it BIGTIME with this one. I'm so happy I purchased my M18R1 last year. Spec'ed with a i9 13900HX and RTX4080, I feel I hit the sweet spot at the discounted price I paid. 300 nits isn't a lot, but after traveling with it a few times, it does the job.
@cueball981 Thanks so much. Alienware is considered a premium brand. And it's running only 300 nits displays. That's what I don't get. And why cut out the 4080/4090 option and all the AMD CPU options are nuked as well. I'm not happy about what Dell's done with the m16 r2. The m18 r1 and m16 r1 can still be found on excellent clearance deals. Totally worth the buy considering the 14th generation Raptor Lake Refresh is just a refresh. Maybe 5% better.
@cueball981 I really like the new design, but no 4080 or 4090 and no AMD. Sorry I'll take a hard pass on the m16 r2. If I was really into Alienware I'd get an m16 r1 with AMD CPU and a 4080/4090.
Hey dude great review personally waiting for the M18R3 then purchasing this laptop as hopefully it will have a better screen and more refined than previous models
@Parky-pm2sg Thank you so much. I'm disappointed with the display choices on the Alienware devices again for a second in 2024. Last year it was understandable with the introduction of the x16 and the m16 and the m18. But this year, not acceptable. Everyone else is moving on to higher refresh rate, Mini-LED and OLED displays. Dell needs to step up their game. I can't recommend their laptops until they do so. Especially as the top-tier premium priced products that they're meant to be.
Please confirm if the battery is still not better than the previous generation, from most reviews I heard that it has gotten much better with the m16 r2.
@idkwhoiam1360 Everyone seems to be raving about battery life being better on the Meteor Lake CPUs. But I have found it to be more or less the same for mixed workloads. Keep in mind that most battery life tests focus on very low brightness around 150nits (lower than you'd actually use normally) and a single task running on repeat.
The colors are good for gaming and general use. This screen will not wow you though. Alienware has been slacking in the displays and its a shame. If you're picky though you'd want something a bit brighter and more color gamut coverage. Go for 100% DCI-P3 or an OLED display.
@Fatima_33 Walekum as salaam. Hands down it'll have to be the Slim 7i, It's a beautiful machine and balances weight and design with power and performance. There's no point in adding weight with the m16 for not much better performance from the GPU. The CPUs are all very close but the i9 is in the lead. So another benefit for the Lenovo Slim 7i. Go with that. You will love it !
Great review! Just a question, I’m planning to buy a laptop for my son. Which one is a better buy? Acer Helios 16 (rtx 4080) vs Alienware m16 r2 (rtx 4070)? Thank you
Overheating is mainly if you go to manual mode and adjust. Otherwise its decent in performance mode. If you buy a $100 laptop cooler you can address most of these concerns. Check out some reviews on my channel of laptop coolers.
Love your videos!! As you've also reviewed Legion slim 5 gen 9 with Ryzen 7 8845HS, which one will you suggest for a more professional use case and hobby gaming?
It was already loaded onto the laptop in the Pictures folder. I went to Personalize your desktop and it was available to select as a background. You can also download some from Dell.
tylerpham5516 At that point it's personal preference and price point. Both very similar and great performers. You're not losing much by going with 13th gen over Meteor Lake Ultra 7 unless you're working with AI stuff - and you'd know it if you were.
I got the LOQ 15" Same model as the one you reviewed with ddr5 5600 I watched the ram swap vid But am still clueless which model of ram should I add to my 8gb?
@iAdamSaladin Any DDR5 SODIMM ram module that's rated at 5600MHz speed will work. Doesn't matter which brand. Feel free to pick up whichever is cheapest. Since the 8GB modules seem to be in short supply, you might want to wait or find a deal on a 32GB kit (that's 2x16GB SODIMM DDR5 5600MHz modules).
@IVANRGTI Prices vary so much by location, country, where you by. Dell has regular pricing, then sale pricing, then Dell laptops at Best Buy and other retailers have different pricing. Prices keep changing. In Canada the price is $2499 CAD but on sale right now on Dell's website for $2299.
Hey man, i just got a new m16 r2, if u still happen to have yours, can u pls confirm if u r able to enable bitlocker? I just simply dont get the option of using bitlocker even though i have secure booth and PTT enabled.
@manuadhishmj2399 I no longer have mine. But that's interesting. I believe on most new laptops, Bitlocker is enabled by default. In fact, since I often test/install Linux, you have to disable Bitlocker and undo drive encryption to get the USB drives to boot succesfully to install. But the BIG caveat is, that you must be running Windows 11 Pro. It will not be available on Windows 11 Home.
The 300 nit brightness just shows alienware are ripping its customers off. Its 2024 and minimum is 500 nits for premium gaminng laptop. What a let down
it's a 240 Charger you can take that the GPU is chromed uo 160 watts the CPU is still pulling 80 watts which should speaks for itself how much power it needs

How’s the color bit on this? I’m big on screen brightness and colors when it comes to gaming

Salaam bro, out of these 3 what would you reccommend overall:
*2 month used* Legion Slim 7i (i9 13900h, 4070, 32gb ram, 1tb) - $1800 CAD
*New* Legion Pro 5i (i7 13700hx, 4070,16gb ram, 1tb) - $1600 CAD
*Refurbished* Alienware M16 (i7 13700hx, 4070, 16gb, 1tb) - $1800 CAD

If you're using it for professional purposes, better go with Intel. AMD has its own little sweet spot.
Alienware m16 r2 ultra-9 or Lenovo legion 7i i9 which one best for high level gaming and programming??
Legion 9i
Of these two I would recommend the Legion 7i. The 9i is in a totally different league and $$$$.
Where did you get the cool Alienware Home Screen?
It was already loaded onto the laptop in the Pictures folder. I went to Personalize your desktop and it was available to select as a background. You can also download some from Dell.
@techknowlux only one I can find on mine is the white alienware head with white background.

Any 2024 gaming laptop should be OLED as standard.
@turbomunch Mini-LED or OLED I would say. I'd guess that in 2025 we'll get more sizes for OLED panels.

Saying this CPU is similar with 13th gen ( raptor lake ) is completely fake ... this has way lower performance.
